•Ir TKKKK HAUTK, DEC. 22. 1888

T/ CHR18TMA8 QIFT8. w«»ks past the note of Christmas prti|»rtttin has been beard althoagb tbere wan little in the air to indicate the Vnesrne** «f the great holiday. The past -week bag witnessed a change, however, •be earth suddenly casting aside ber summer wraps and clothing berseif in the white rot* beloved of the good Saint

Nicholas aid his prancing steeds. The green Christina* trees on tbe street corners have had their usual background of ice and snow and tbe tinkling sleigh "bells have pealed forth their silvery music at intervals, a music ever instinct •with joyous recollections. Tbe shop windows, brilliant with candy, toys and brie a-brac, have seemed mora iu keeping with tbe seswon since tbe breath of winter has baif hidden them fnder a misty veil.

And so again we stand upon tbe threshold of the great gift-giving season of the year. "What but am racle," asks one "makes ordinary practical human nature blossom out at this season, to the fruitage of sucu Murprlnes, sucli etreful choosing, such days and bours of secret preparations, during which tbe actors, young and old, are willing to forego their tnea's and steal from their aleep? And well maysuuh a question be a*ked, for it is the honoring of a birthday as the birthday of no ona els* is honored upon earth. Tbere have been great men who have filled the world witb noise of their lame, but tbe days which gsve thein birth are forgotten. Not so that of the lowly Gallilean, boru in a insnger and having nowhere to lay lit* hesd. The anniversary of his birth will never be forgotten, for does not its tHubratlou widen and deepen with every passing year? Bwing Sifted up lie ban indeed drawn all men urstu him. All nte to hliri at leant in one way or an other, however selfish and worldly they may lie. Nip d^on, the genius of war and revolution, the incarnation ofsel fishness, as he stands at last upon bis lonely inland, a ursy sea before blm and a gray sky above, turns to the contemplation of this wonderlui being. He contrasts his own life and work with those of Christ and Is forced to tKe con •elusion that h» was more than human— be was divine.

It is tbe divinity of his character that blossoms out so besutitully at tbe Christmas Holidays.' As bis gift to the world wax priceless so it i« iu the custom of giving all tnannerofgood and beautiful things that his naine is most held in memory by the world. There are uot wanting those who preach against this anlversal custom of present-making as a species of wasteful extravaganoe. But they preach in vain and are likely to onntinue doing so. It is tbe old tight of utility agalnat sentiment and sentiment will wiu the d4y as It ouitbt to do. In this busy, hurrying, work a day a world there is Utile enough of It, Gkxi knows. I jet It hive a chance one day ill the year at least. Let It ran and tie glorified. Let it well up in old hearts and young, among rich and poor, the whole world over, In the giving of gift", bo they small or great, »ntly or inexpensive. There msy, doubtless will be, money foolishly sf*»nt but no tbere in at other times and in other ways.

As fot the Mall It wishes all its readers a Merry Christmas and houses full of presents for old sod voumr.

NOTES AND OBSERVATIONS ON MAT TEBS AROUND TOWN.

wisn every parent, every young man who has Just entered into active life, und every boy who has reached a thinking age, could have heard tbe aeries of sermons or lectures on the Prodigal Son, which Rev. J. Wheeler has been delivering at the Baptist church. For the subject of prodigal sons is an Interesting one, familiar to nearly every household In this city, and many are the homes from which tbe prodigals have gone forth to spend their substance in riotous waste, and who, alas! never return that the fatted ca may be killed to celebrate their home-coming. We have them at our right hann, at our left, and everywhere. The fust young inen who frequent fashinnablesaluons and bawdy houses, the boys who are rapidly becoming fast young nieu, und who pattern as nearly as possible after them, who spend their time in popular billiard saloons, piny ing billiards and tippling—arc all prodigals in various stages of tne journey so forcibly set forth in the parable. If these young men and boys could tiavc hea these sermons referred to, I think that with many it would have meant reform. Mr. Wheeler is, I believe, the first minister here who has devot ed bimse especially to wyrk among the voung men. and although, as he said in a re cent sermon, he becomes discouraged at times, he overcomes his discouragement, and continues the good work. We have bad oc CHslonal "Sermons to Young Men,"fro/n different ministers, but never a series devoted entirely to thein. There is a broad, vast field for ministerial 1 tbor among the young men, too ma of whom are becoming prod ignis from the hoiue of good resolutions and steady habits, 4

How many littTe sous there are fn ibis city, to whom Christmas-tide, will bring no cheer, bow many heavy-hearted wives who will rem iin ungladdened through that joyous season, that would be happy were those dens of iniquity, tbe gambling rooms, not winning night after night, the hard earnings of fathers, who rob their famlli of the necessities of life in order to indulge their Fascination for gaming. I know one man who frequents these hell holes, who, years ago, was a workman in moderate circumstances, with steady employment, and an interesting family growing up around blm but ik now, owing entire to his love for gambling, on* of the most contemptible figures to be seen on tbe streets, his wife and children poverty-stricken a fid suffering, and he not man enough to give up gambling and work to relieve their misery. Of course there is no teclalming such a man, but others are heing turned out Just like him, and some halt should be ide in the infamous work It is poor comment on our officials if nothing can be done to done up thexe reports. The law Is plain on the subject, and if we have no officers with the courage to close them—or »t tempt to -there will be a time enme when they wilt le.called to account for it. hs&ti.

The Indlanapol's Society for Organizing Charity have a metbod of providing Christ, mas presents for the poor children of that city, that could welt be followed here and would make happy many little hearts that wou otherwise realize noneof the joys that holiday times btiug to the majority of children. a list is prepared of tliechlMr.-n who poverty deprives of mauy of the enjoyment8 of life, and the children of we'l to do parent" tru interested in their behalf. One of these waifs Is gl veu to eac'i of the better conditioned children with the feeling that it is hix or her duty to make ChrlBimas a glad time for iein. A story tiook, a do 1, a box or 0 ock«,Htory papers, magazines, a sack of candy,or any little trtfle, of small vaiue in Itse f, wi I be a very welcome present to a little one unaccustomed to such things, and how much good the giving of en such small thing* wll do the hearts of the children, who thuH early in life 'earn that it Is better to give than to receive. It teaches thein the good lesson practically, and opens up their little hearts to larger deeds In the futuro, when tbe word inere that comes to all, strangles with, and too frequently murters, all th.tt lsgo*id in the heart. If one hundred Utile children In this city were, on Christmas rn rultt«, to oriifitten tbe faces and lighten the heirtswf one hunlred tittle ones 'oo poor to enjoy presents bnt in thN way, would it not »ke them fee. b^tt. rund happ er them wives, and give tbem a more perfect en joymciit of iie se wfin iliat is, for one day at cist, theeragof "pence on earth.good wil to meu.M

This is not an elega»t description o| the position in walking, but it is a* near being correct as an unlmitated person can give. Physicians say it is a curva-ur of the spine brought about by softening of the nruiii. but I don't believe this. It may arfcefmm a -*ell meant endeavor to walk erect, but even stoop shoulders would be far preferable to this outlandish walk.

There is one thing practiced in fnls city, and Isewberefor that matter, tbat I have always thought was an outrage, and thai is in an employer, whether it be tbe city, a railroad corporation, or a business man, requiring bis employ»to p»y d«.bts they may have contracted or else lose their positions. It may be communistic to say it, but I believe when an employe does bis work properly, and to his employer's satisfaction, tbat it Is none of the latter's business whether he pays hW debts or not, or rather it is not enough of .hi business to discharge the man for fallinu to pfcy his debts, or enough 'o justify him In holding back bis wages to pty these debts. An employer should not be expected to run a detective agency in oonnectlon with his business, to find out whether bis workmen are paying their debts, and if they are not compel them to pay up, or discuarge them. It is true tnere are some men wlo wi 1 never pay their debts if they can possibly avoid doing so, but then business men am expected to act with their eyes open. Besides, for every man who wou'i pay there are bun dreds who are unfortunate and cant, and to make a general rule like this, does an injustice to honest men who are the victims of circumstances.
