WK read of a Philadelphia man wfio attempted to beat the record of the longest spree. Ho had been drunk constantly for three years, and died a few days since with a glass of whisky in his hand. He bait the record, but cannot enjoy the notoriety that he attained. Sometimes it takes whisky a long time to do its work, but if tbe patient will persevere, it is only a matter of time when whisky can stand on his prostrate boby and crow. Terre Haute has a number of men, who are following tbe example set by tbe Philadelphia msn, and it will be a matter of a very short timo when whisky will stand and crow over their prostrate body, if they don't let upon drink.

Dr. when interviewed on tne subjeot, remarked calmly: "I have been expecting it. She went up there and had no one to protect her, and no one understood the conditions." Mrs. Stewart made a mistake. She should always take tbe "Pence Hall Committee" with her when ahe wants to give seances. They understand "the conditions." If a spectator, in the Terre Haute seance room, had attempted to "grab" a spirit, he would have found himself grabbed by the"commlttee'^and it wouldn't have been necessary

mands marked attention in Washington This is due not to any brilliant speech but to his large form and splendid pby sique. How much a man Is shape has to do with his success in life. Haven't you noticed that people with long necks, and consequently long forms, are never voluble. They listen and think. Tall and massive people are equally inclined to silence qpd thought. The natures of both Mteeomewhat sluggish, but aroused their passions save the sweep of parkin*. Small UA people or small thin people are generally very talkative. Mostof the talk Is superficial. Altitudlnous persons look to generals people near ttra ground low details. Always •elect tad m|n or tall, tnasah* man to act for you in sourt or in political convention. Small men have but little weight in either. It Is a human nature fact, and don't forget it. is a hint for Our Mayor and
Justioes of the Peace. A Chicago judge has hit upon this novel way of bracing up drunkards who are arraigned in his court. He fines them heavily, and then tells them he will remit the line on con ditlon that they take a legal oath that they will never touch liquor again. This most of them gladly do. The oath once made, he quietly informs them that to breakjft is perjury, and that the penalty of perjury is a year, at least, in the penlteutiary. It is said that drunkards never come to his court but once. It would be well for all justices to imitate the example of this one. ,ijs,
is due to the Water Works company to say that Superintendent Briggs had no notice that the test was to be made of the National House standpipe, last week, and the fire pressure was not put on.
