AT a bad runaway, a few days ago, a reporter on one of the dally papers waa on tbe scene, with notebook and pencil, before the horse stopped running. He had tbe occurrence all written out in thrilling style before tbe roan was dragged out front the ruins of the buggy, merely leaving a Wank space to say whether he wa* dead or all re, Knterpris*. my boy, enterprise.

IT takes a good deal of cheek to listen ealmly and unblusbingly through the average comic opera, but our first society has got it. In "Heart and Hand," last Tuesday evening, there was enough ado made over the "nuptial chamber" business to send modesty flying to tbe fire eecape. Modesty didn't fly, however, but sat stiH and seemed rather disappointed that the seene ended so tamely.

ONE of the best Indications of the substantial growth of this city is the great number of small dwellings owned and occupied by mechanics and men of limited means. And yet there is still many a man now siruggliog wi-h the "bread anH butter problem" who could have had a home all paid for if be had been courageous enough to have bought a lot on time, when they we.e cheap, borrowed money enough to put up a house and let what be would have had to pay for rent pay it out.

THE Democrat has changed its publication day to Monday morning. There is an opening here for a bright, enterprising Monday morning issue, and Mr. Seldom ridge has an opportunity to make a successful publication. This, with other recent newspaper changes, leaves Tbe Saturday Evening Mall as the only exclusively Saturday weekly— afield It first filled and which it occupied for the first half dozen years of its publication. At one time there were, besides the dailies, four Saturday papers published in this city.

THANKSGIVING Day had a very general observance in this city. Work and business to a gr&t extent was suspended In the afternoon, and many shut down for the entire day. The public observance consisted of union services at the Presbyierian church, at which Rsv. Wheeler presided, Rev. Skinner conducted the devotional services and Rev. Breedeu delivered the sermon, accompanied by music of a h'gh order. At night our people sought entertainment at O. A. R. hall, a supper at Knights of Pythias hat', the ball of the Dick Thompson Zouaves at the Hebrew Synagogue and the Minstrels.

THERE S a movement on fooi.—and the movers mean business—to secure a reduction of rates for telephone service Whether the company can or will make this reduction we oannot say, but thore is no question that more ban half of the subscribers are paying a large price for the service they get. A similar movement has recently been Inaugurated in Lafayette. The company refused to reduce, and now a petition is being circulated to ascertain how many patrons of the present system will pledge themselves to take out the instruments on the begiunlng of the new year unless the reduction is made. The organization of a new company is contemplated.
