Bliss MAT MCEWAN, the Indiana thrnsb, will have a benefit next Friday evening at the Opera House. For a number of years Miss McEwan has labored faithfully in the public schools and, nnaided, has supported a mother and educated a sister. Longing to give her attention to music and to the cultivation of her beautiful voice, afce has been compelled by necessity to deny herself this pleasure, but the sister will graduate in June and begin teaching. After many years of waiting Miss May begins to see the way clear to pursue her beloved art. This benefit is for the purpose of enabling her to enter the Boston Conservatory of Music. In recognition of her unfailing generosity in singing for so many entertainments, as well as in appreciation of her lovely voice, we predict a crowded honse. The programe printed in onr advertising oolnms, embracing as it does onr best musical and elocutionary talent, indicates are enjoyable entertainment.

"There is only one thing I am afraid of," said a citizen, about on o'clock this morning aa an Express reporter passed him on the corner of Eighth and Main streets. "I am af aid some policeman will tak« me for a prostitute and run me in."—Sarcastic JBqnm

We don't know who this citizen was. The item is probably a fiction. But if true, and be was a male prostitute, as he probably was, out at that time of night, why shouldn't the police run him in. However, "citizen" may rest easy. The policemen have no ordersjto arrest male prostitutes. It would require too large a force. Besides the station house and jail are too small to accommodate so many and the county is not able to keep them. It is only women who are locked up after the males have gone home.

THE Express States that for several weeks there has been some quiet putting of heads together with the purpose of furnishing Terre Haute with a new hotel. The project is to form a stock company with capital stock of |200,000. Toward this amount it has been stated there has been placed 180,000. It is one of the plans to proceed with this amount of subscribed stock and mortgage the property for the remaining $120,000 with which to complete the structure. It is also understood the Ft. Harrison dnb would be moved into the new hotel and thus have the influence of its association and tbat^of the personal acquaintance of the members. No particular site has been decided upon.

FROM the proceedings of the meeting last Saturday it looks like Jos. H. Blake has taken the Vigo Agricultural Society in out of the cold. The meeting next Saturday will tell the story. In case he gets control he intends to run his street railway out to the fair grounds and make it a pleasure resort.

A BIO SCHEME.

OWEN, PIXLEY A COW GUESSING MATCH.

The enterprising firm of Owen, Pixley A Co. oceopy half of this page to announce four guessing matches. Like everything they take hold of it is upon the most liberal scale, involving an expenditure of money that causes the ordinary merchant to open his eyes in wonder. The prises to be awarded to the successful guessers are now on exhibi-

THERE has been neediees talk about the paper mill upon Otter Creek poisoning onr drinking water. The small ameuntof vitriol that may get into Otter Creek will certainly be very much dilated before it reaches the waterworks pump.

THE McKeen Cadets still talk of disband ng, but cannot get together a quorum to Cake the proper action. Perhaps it would be more in aooordance with the wishes of our people to *&y—improper action. *. —E. D. HARVET is continually putting on exhibition at his big Furniture house on Fourth street new and novel things in his line. For this he is deserving of the constant increasing patronage he is receiving. He is not content with goodB manufactured in this country, and among recent importations, has received a lot of elegant Bent Wood Chairs, from Australia. They are greatly admired for their beauty, comfort and tastefulneos in point of shape, good polish and fine rattan work. The rockers are models of grace and comfort, the back having a ooncave shape, into which the human back fits perfectly, thus enabling the person sitting in the ohair to obtain comfortable rest without being annoyed bjK the preset re of the wooden parts of the back. TEAR'S PRESENTS!

—A short visit to Kusener's Palace of rfusie this morning thoroughly con vinoed ns that he is up to business, and now better prepared tban ever. The first and second floors of his building we found every inch occupied with stock aud we learned that Mrs. E. during her two week's stay at New York personally selected large additions to the alieady ve»y largestock. Thesupeiioradvantages Mr.K. posseses over any other in the trade here can be enumerated in a very few few words. He has been doing business in this community the past quarter of a

It is not a catch-penny affair, or in the nature of a lottery, for back of the distribution of these valuable prizes, Owen, Pixley A Co. have an object, perhaps not observable on the surface. This is to get th^ name and address of every person who buys anything of them before the 10th of January. When the cards with the guesses are sent in the name and addreia will be recorded in a book, which will be of immense value to the firm afterwards, in sending out circulars, papers, and ether advertising.

One of our brother editors says: Keep yonr trade dollars to pay the butcher. They are about as much legal tender as his beef." He wouldn't say that if he lived in this city and bought his meat of J.
