In his lectuse on self-reliance Emer-

York, it seems to his friends and to him-

self that he is right in being disheart-

ened. and ip complaining the rest of his life." Again he says: "The secret of fortune is joy in our hands. Welcome evermore to gods and men is the self* helping man. For him all doors are flung wide him all tongues greet, all honors crown, all eyes follow with desire. Our love goes out to him and em braces him because he did not need it."

The measure of one's success is in ward, not outward. It depends little on circumstances or surroundings- There are men who never lose faith in them'

selves, and they show it in all they say

POOR Miss Bond, of Taylorville, Illi nois, presents a most pitiful spectacle of suffering persecution. Months ago a horrible crime was perpetrated upon her by a gang of desperadoes, and for along time her life was despaired of. TERRE HAUTE SATURDAY EVENING MAIL.

I STATISTICS having been published RO-

The infamous verdict in the Dukes ing to show that Illinois is the first

murder trial at Tjniontown' Pa., has been made the subject of wide comment. The Cincinnati Commercial Gazette says the acquittal of Dukes will do more to encourage the people to interfere with the proceed ore of courts in criminal cases, and take them out of the hands of the lawyers and juries for summary punishment, than any |single case that has happened in our judicial history

wheat producing* State in the Union with Indiana second and Ohio third Mr..Alexander Heron, secretary of the State board of agriculture, takes up the figures and demonstrates the claim of Indiana to rank first in the list for while it is true that Illinois raises in the aggregate more bdshels than Indiana, the area of the State is one half larger than that of Indiana. Obviously the proper way to reckon is upon the basis of territory, and thus estimated Mr Heron shows that in*82 Indiana produced 1,265 bushels of wheat per square mile, while Illinois produced but 933, and Ohio but 1,115 bushels. Going back to the crops of 1879, the yield was as follows per square mile: Indiana, 1,316 Ohio 1,128, and Illinois, 912 bushels. Thus Indiana goes to the front rank as a wheat producing State^ and Illinois drops to the third rank^:^ ^/V '^A NOTABLE event of the past week was the arrival at New York, on Thursday, of the vessel bearing the remains of John Ho ward Payne, author of "Home, Sweet Home," from Tunis, Italy. The body will lie in state in that city and Wash ington, where it will be finally interred on June 9th, the 91st anniversary of the poet's birthday, with appropriate ceremonies. There is something very poetic in this tardy recognition of the author of the sweetest song known to the En glish tongue. It is one of the few hu man productions that .are destined to immortality, and the memory of John Howard Payne will be always green Like Gray's "Elegy," it is enough of itself to keep the name of its maker in everlasting remembrance.

IF reports are to be belieyod, a scheme is on foot for a grand consolidation of the Western Union telegraph company and the Bell telephone company with view of getting control of the telephone business of the country. The movement is manipulated by Jay Gould and is said to contemplate the- use of the telegraph wires by the telephones, it being th'ought probable that in time the telephone will supersede the telegraph to a great extent Under the new arrangement when Western Union stock begins to decrease in value, telephone stock will increase and thus the equilibrium will be preserved

THE citizens of Bozeman, Montana are wild with delight, and corner lots will doubtless jump like jack-rabbits It is all because the first train on the Northern Pacific reached that place on Thursday last. The train was received by a procession of 5,000 people, and music, guns and oratory. The event was well worth celebrating, for it will prove the most marked and important one in the history of the town, and worthy of perpetual remembrance. By the way Bozeman is one of the most enterprising towns on the Northern Pacific road, and has the promise of becoming a large dty* =B====BHBB 'V*f^

THE Evansville Journal is mak^f a manly and creditable fight against the repudiation of the debt of that dty which amounts to some million and a half dollars. The repudiation of ber debt in any form or to any extent would not only be a disgrace to Evansville, but would in some degree put a shame upon the entire State. Such a prosperous and growing dty has no call to resort to repudiation, and there can hardly be any serious danger of her falling into so serious and lamentable a blunder.

SPENDING the summer at a fashiona ble watering place, or even making a tour of Europe, has become far too commonplace for the New York grandees and the newest thing is to cross the ocean blue in one's private yacht. It is said that not less than half a dozen New York families will make such a voyage the coming summer. The world will have nothing fine enough for these people by and by, and then what will become of-them? Tney will be ready to be translated—somewhere.

THE police commissioners of Indianapolis, under the new law, have been appointed and consist of John P. Frenzelt a prominent German banker, Wm. Mur phy, of the wholesale house of Murphy, Hibben & Co., and T. T. Malott, also a banker and prominent railroad man. The first two are Democrats and the .latter a Republican. It to not certain as jet whether these gentlemen will accept or not. If they do it is conceded that the board will be excellently constituted.

THE New York Legislature has passed a bill appropriating fi,000,000 for the purchase of the property surrounding Niagara Falls and the establishment of a State Park. If this will result in delivering the travelling public from the dutches of the heartless cormorants who have hitherto preyed upon them without let or hindrance, it will be a most happy deliverance.

THIS has been a good year for breach of promise suits. A New York girl has est scooped in $10,000 for shattered affections, and a San Francisco damsel has gone her 13,000 better. Young ladies who have been jilted should take notice.

THE hobgoblin of an extra session of the Legislature seems to be pretty conclusively told. Governor Porter says emphatically that there will not be one, and be should know. iMk Caadjr 5are.
