THK coal dealers are fairly dancing with delight. They and the ice men are the only people who have enjoyed the weather since Thursday morning.

THK advertisers have crowded out a great deal of reading matter and home gossip for this issue. The bolldsys sre at hand, and our business men have (pades large claim on our columns.

AN elegant affair was the reception given by Prof. Duenwegand pupils, last night, at Dowllng Hall. The Ringgold Orchestra made the music, and the attendance was largti and select. Prof. Duenweg is meeting with gratifying success in his dancing classes.

THK dearth of local news within the dty has one redeeming feature—the same consolation comes to the witters of home news for the papers that Is afforded the doctor when his business is distressingly dull. If he has but little to do, It Is because the sanitary condition of the community Is good. It may be bad for the physician, but it argues well for the mans.

If our report of local news be

CHRISTMAS

will soon be here. The hoi

iday season of which it is the advent, alwaya evokes the moat generous sentiments and deeds of which human nature is capable. Gifts, as evidences of affection, are often given upon the birthdays of the recipients but there Is a peculiar fitness in observing the one which gave a Savior to mankind, as the day in all the calendar upon which to make other* bappy by the "giving of good gifts." THK season for hslls and parties is here and the young people anticipate much pleasure during the winter.. And yet if you area member of that mysterious circle called "society" there will be some painfal evenings spent in doing your duty, standing in a crowd, with tight kid gloves on

your

hand, tighter

boots on your feet, and weariness in your heart. You call this enjoying yourselves. You know all about it. Your shoes, pi neb you, but you csnnot sit down. Your companion bores you, but you must listen and smile, and smile and listen. If you try to move about, you tread on thirteen hideous dress trains that drag themselves like half dead boa constrictors at the heels of their fair possessors. You eat cake and cream and drink coffee, though you know it will give you a headache in the morning. You tell your hostess that you had a ••splendid time," though you are conscious that you are telling a lie, for which your conscience, if you have one, will reproach you severely. This smirking and smiling, and lying ourselves into the belief that the tortnre of a stand up dress party is pleasure, is the greatest triumph of modern civilization.

THE City Council, on Tuesday evening, took the bull by the horns, snd suspended Wm. Burnett from the hesd of the Fire Department for a term of eight months, for improper conduct at the Clutter cooper shop fire. Of course this means a permanent suspension. Councilman Dave Phillips cast the only vote against the suspension. Lawrence Kretz, superintendent of the fire alarm telegraph, was sppolnted chief of the firs department. He has had long service in the depsrtment, and Is an excellent man for the place. On Wednesday, Mr. Burnett made a brutal and unjustifiable assault on Mr. Kretz, st the Ninth street headquarters. The first blow was upon the right eye, followed by one on the cheek bone and behind the ear. The firemen rushed to bis assistance, when Burnett desisted, and with the sneering remark: "There's your damned chief," left the building. Mr. Kretz, although severely hurt, declines to prosecute his assailant. This last act has caused general indignation, and a demand for ths' immediate and permanent removal of auch a man from the department.

OUR HEALTH.

Dr. Waters, the health officer for the past mohtb, msde the following report to the city council Tuesday evening:
