UNDOUBTEDLY one of the greatest commercial evils from which this country is suffering is the habit of speculation by means of which few great capitalists "corner" tbemarket on a particular commodity and force its price up to a fictitious value. The New York Tribune says that petroleum has been controlled by a monopoly for years, cotton was thus held at unnatural prices for along time, and the present prostration in the iron market is due to the cornering of the market by a combination two years ago. The cornering of the wheat, corn and pork market is a familiar thing, and the same thing is true with many other of the staple articles. This preying of the few upon the many has grown to such intolerable proportions that it is high time the legislatidn of the country should be turned towards remedying the evil if it is possible to do so. Some of the States are experimenting in this kind of legislation and others should follow their example but as the evil is a national one, the cure should be national also, and the Congress of the United States ought to pass a law making all auch combinations criminal. The public sentiment of the country would support such a law and go far toward giving it efficiency. We talk much about taxes bat there is no tax to compare with that which is imposed upon the msny by those gigantic combination of capitalists to corner the marketa of the country. It ia an evil and a crime which must be put down in one way or another. Unless the parties now existing manifest a disposition to deal vigorously with the nutter it is likely to form the basis of a new party in the new future.

HARDLT any invention of modern times has grown so quickly into general use aa the telephone. Only five years have elapsed since the instrument wss invented, and now every dty and considerable town baa a large number of tbem in use. Not only so, but the larger dties sre obtaining telephonic connection with the smaller towns for milea around them. Cincinnati, for inatance, is connected by telephone with more than one hundred towns throughout Ohio, Indiana and Kentucky, and at a coat of from 36 to 45 oents the wire can be used tor Ave minutea. Now a good deal can be said la fire minutes, and ss

T*« great event ia the actrrooomiaal world, the transit of Vcnua, occurred on Wednesday and waa witnesaed by edeo» lift? parties in various quarter* of the world. Inaosoe localities ths cloudiness of the atmosphere interfered with the observations, and the result waa not satisfactory aa waa hoped for, bet at other points the conditions were more favorable and better naanlta were obtained. Mare than 120 years will now elapse before Venus will again pasa •cross the fscaof the sun. ft waa this fact which made the astronomers so anxious to get correct obserraliona of the phenomenon. The data they obtained would constitute a basis for calculating the true distance of the earth from the sun, which in Ita turn, is the basis of ail celestial sMMonnmt. St la to be hoped that when the result* obtained by all the observer* are compared lb* fPHMtral result will be found cocci ttaivc oa the point deetred.

A BUFFALO dispatch say* the demor slizatian in western New York northern Pennsylvania, caused by recent speculation in oil equals which followed the Jay Cooke failure 1873. It is supposed that between and five million dollar* were lost during the erase. The reform of the civil service cannot be much longer delayed and some really effective measure must be adopted looking to its improvement. From the advocacy of a few thoughtful and earnest men like George W. Curtiss and others, the demand for abetter syatem of civil service has grown to be that of the people, and whenever this stage of an agitation is reached Cougress really becomes concerned to do something.

Ir the atatement of Doraey is to be believed a fund of |400,000 waa sent to Indiana and naed by the Republicans in the campaign of 1880, and four times the amount in New York. It is needless to say that these vast sums could not be required for legitimate campaign purposes, whence the conclusion is inevitable that the money was employed for illegitimate purposes. This.is a startling revelation, aud one which Should go far to create a public sentiment against the use of money for political purposes. It is the source of more corruption and demoralisation in our politics

Hoi* JOSEPH E. MCDONALD has gone to Washington to spend the Winter. This is doubtless for the purpose of making up hia preeidential procpecta which certainly appear to be very flattering. At a conference of,prominent Democratic politicians of the weatern aad middle States in Chicago the other day, held for the purpoae of considering the choice of a Presidential candidate in 1884, it was .conceded that the selection must fall upon a western man and Mr. McDonald was .the decided favorite among all the namea mentioned. Should McDonald head the ticket on one aide and Harriaon on the other would make a "whooping" campaign for Indiana in 18G4.

The practice of assessing government employes for campaign purpoeea haa been rendered so odious in connection with Jay Hubble committee th»* it is as unpopular with one party as with the other, and the indicationa are that both will unite too pass an effective law to prohibit it. THK gossips have a fine opportunity and are making the most of it in Lafayette. Mrs. Helen M. Gougar, wife of a prominent attorney, and editor of "Our Herald," the State organ of the woman suffragists, has brought suit for slander against City Marshall Mandler, who stated that Mrs. Cougar went to Capt. D. Witt Wallace'a law office and remained there until midnight alone with that gentleman. The leading members of the Lafayette bar are retained on one side or the other of the case and developments of an interesting, not to say of a sensational character, are promised. It is intimated that Mrs. Gougar has spread her net for larger game than the defendant in the present suit and that other bearta will be made to ache before the bualneaa is ended. The social and literary|stending of Mrs. Gougar, who is well known not only in Lafayette but throughout the State, gives of course increased zest to the scandal, and, aft before stated, the tongue of goasip will wag incessantly until the case cornea to an end.. ,.^1.
