THK head of the family begins to feel uneasy. He notices that his wife begins to look crosswise at the carpets, curtains, ceilings, etc., and a vision floats through hia mind of a man with a broom-stick In his hand interviewing a carpet swung over the back fenoe. THE Broom Brigade made a second appearance at the Congregational Church Thursday evening. A club composed of such young people could be made one of much pleasure and profit.

THE PASSING SHOW.
1*LAYS AND PLAYERS
One of the most satisfying dramatic entertainments of the season was the performance of one
hundred-year-old
comedy of "School for Scandal," the moral of which is just as applicable today as the century ago when it was written. The requirements of the part of "Lady Teazle" do not test the powers of Fanny Davenport, as do some of her other personations. The comedy is strongest in its male characters, and the "Sir Peter Teazle" of Charles Fisher, the "Charles Surface" of George Clarke, and the "Joseph Surface" of Edmund Tearle were particularly strong, and altogether made, as before remarked, a very satisfactory performance.
performances have been some
what overdone by a dozen or more traveling companies this season, and our people area little shy of them. Hence it was that Saulsbnry's Troubadours, on Wednesday evening, hadn't the big audience it deserved—though it was by no means a small gathering. The company is composed of only five people, but chuck full of talent, bubbling over with fun of the most catching kind. The Troubadours will have a jolly welcome whenever they come this way again
The old nursery romance of Jack, the Giant Killer, has been woven into a pleasing little operetta for Harry Deakin's Liliputian Opera company, and will be presented at the Opera House next Wednesday evening. The entertain ment is both novel and amusing. The St. Paul Pioneer-Press says:
The dialogue of the operetta is in ryhme, and is replete with taking allusions to both persons and events of both national and rocal distinction, and is interspersed with songs and choruses set to the music of popular operas and alis of the day, whlcn were agreeably rendered. The little people all acquitted themselves very creditably, and. the contrast between their diminutives and the massive proportions of Col. Orr was quite laughable. The latter proved to be quite a good humored giant after atl, and yielded with good grace to his lilllputian captors. Miss Jennie Quigley proved to be the bright particulaar star of the constellation. She Is a consummate little actress, and as graceful as a fawn. She soubrette parts with sprightliness y, and sings very sweetljr-and correctly. Her sones were enthusiasts
and vlvacit\
cally received. Admiral Dot showed himself to be a clever comedian, and the specialties of Commodore Foote and Eliza Nestal were features of the performance.
Harry Miner's Great Comedy "4" Combination will occupy the Opera House stage on Thursday evening. The Boston Herald remarks:
Instead of calling it the "Comedy 4'' it should be the "Comedy 24," for they are all good from beginning to end, and a delightful and highly enjoyable programme was rendered. It is seldom a company of this kind gives such a choice, clean entertain ment. The Brennans and Capt. Liable are immense in their musical specialty, "the Cobpers." ValJeangave the best juggling act ever seen in this city. Carrie Swaa, comic vocalist, was recalled a number of .times and gave great satisfaction. The"Little Four" Talbots, Mack and the Carroll Bros., in their burlesque circus completely captivated the house, and were recalled at least a dozen times. The programme closed with the amusing comedy of "Murphy's Dream," which brought "down the bouse" and perfect satisfaction. We would ai all who desire a few hours of and pleasure to attend.

The number of our readers is not small who will hear with pleasure the announcement that Joe Emmett will surely be here next Friday evening and appear in his new comedy of Fritz in Ireland," for there is no comedian on the American stage with the magnetic drawing power of this* favorite actor. Tho scenery in this drama is new—the scenes are perfect, having been painted from sketches and models taken on the spot. The properties are said to be'euriosities. A set of real chime church bells will be introduced and rarg by Mr. Emmett, with song, an effect in music quite thrilling
Lotta will play here her new drama, Bob." Bob is a girl. Oscar Wilde does not seem to take In the rural districts. His tour amoung the small towns was a failure, and a pecuniary loss to his manager,
Pauline Markham recently played in •The Two Orphans" at Americus, Ga and gave such satisfaction that all the people left the theater at the end ef the third act and did not come back again
A New York paper says: "Mr. Charles Paroloe writes to a friend that he does not intend to let Aldrich capture 'all the fat' in' the next piece they do. He says he has as many rights as Aldrich, and he intends to begin to as eeri them." It is not a questioti of "rights" so much as of ability, we imag ine.
It is related that when Patti demanded |5,000 for each concert from Manager H. Haverly, he remarked that it would be equivalent to $50,000 a month, and remarked, sotto voce: "The President of the United States works a year for that amount." "Well," responded the diva promptly, "get the President to ring fdr you." As President Arthur sings good bass, the suggestion wasn't so far oat of the way.
The following judicious reminder Bas peen posted on the curtain of the Grand Theatre, Rouen, in letters large enough to be read by everyone present: "When afire breaks out in a theatre the danger most to 1m dreaded is an indiscriminate rash for the doors. In the usual coarse the Grand Theatre is wholly evacuated in seven minutes, so that the last spectator can always leave the building long before any danger really exist*."
VenSe Clancy, the popular and well known burlesque actress, died on Wednesdav of last week* at her home in
southern California. She was a native of Cincinnati, and the daughter of C. R. Gardiner, now a theatrical agent in New York. She appeared first in ballet with the Oates comic opera company at the Park Theatre, and six weeks later was a singing soubrette. She sang Evangeline in Rice's burlesque If Booth's, and afterward went with Mr. and Mrs. Nat Goodwin in their "Hobbies" company. Two years ago she married Mr. Rennie Deacamps, and they went to live at Nojlhoff, southern California. She wes 22 years old.
