None of the Astors follow any bustness except collecting their rents. President Arthur is such an accomplished silent man that it is hard to start a rumor about him*"'
Eight of the jurors who aaquited Belle Spaulding of murdering her husband at Galesburg, Ills., accepted her invitation to a banquet in celebration of her escape from the gallows.
Col. Rockwell, it is said, is the only person who actually saw both of the assassinated presidents die. He was detailed by Secretary Stanton as soon President Lincoln was shot to be guard at the house where he was lying, and witnessed the death struggle next morn ing.
It is generally supposed that when man is running for Congress his politi cal opponents can say whatever they have a mind to about him, whether it is true or false, but a precedent has been established in Pennsylvania that forebedes the destruction of the liberties of the press. When Mr. Scran ton, of Scran ton, Pa., was running for Congress a year ago the Democratic paper said that he was a thief, and while Collector of Internal Revenue had stolen govern ment money. Mr. Scranton sued the editor for libel, and got $3,383 damages.
There is a curious case in Pennsylvania of a man who has been convicted of mur der upon his own confession, with no other evidence than circumstances making it possible for him to have committed tbe deed. Now, with the gallows star ing him in the face, he weakens, and in sists that his statements were untrue, and were made while temporarily in sane, and laboring under strong religious excitement. The question whether to hang him or not is being agitated, but the best solution of the dilemma would be to send him to prison and let him stay until he finds evidence to clear himself.
The two most important things in this lower world both begin with M— money and myself. It is also important to knew that Wright A Kaufman, the popular grocers, corner of Wabash and Seventh streets, give prompt attention to all orders for Dressed Turkeys, Chickens, Ducks, Rabbits, Oysters, Celery, Capberries, New Hams, Buckwheat Flour, Maple Syrup, Honey, Mince Meat, California Dried Peaches, Florada Sweet Orangos, Michigan Apples, Malaga Grapes, and everything in the eatable line.
Take your watch or clock to Jacob Kern, in the new McKeen block, when it needs cleaning or repairing, and the work will be well done, without risk of the time-piece being ruined.
Cash Assets, Nearly 97,000,009 All who want first-class Fire Insurance, will do well to insure in the Home, of New York. Office, southwest corner of Fourth and Main streets, where Policies are written. All losses are promptly adjusted at this agency.
