A PAPER FOR THE PEOPLE.
The Hunter's Bride
Continued from Sixth Page. "My friends," said he, "I am grieved to see the thing
taking
so serious a turn
but, sine© it cannot beav^rted, the sooner the better for al" parties concerned. There are lond cries for a rope: Suppose there is nothing of the kind- MI tho crowd—wo shall have to send to the settlement for one. But hold! Since I come to think of it, I have a cord in my pocket that might answer, if the thing must be done."
And thus saying the speaker drew forth A rope—the very thing, evidently prepared for the especial purpose to whidhjio now offered it* A noose AfaB quickly arranged around t&e 'neck "of the doomed man, one end of tbe line thrown order members out the order, "when a" jay that had nestled in the tree the summer before, perhaps, seeing the rope upon the limb, concluded that they were trespassing upon her territory, and after the manner of jays, set up a fierce and an^ry c^y, and wont dashing in and out among the branches immediately above their heads.
The people of those superstitjious days associated the jay, in some man Her, with evil spirits, and, feeling that they were not doing altogether right on this occasion, tho settlers accepted tho demonstration above mentioned as a warning and slunk back from the tasK which the task whi'ih they had been ordored to perform. "Pull him up!" sboHted Col. Mumford, but no one moved to comply. "Pull hi-n up!" was the cry from half a dozen others, and yet the rope was suffered to hang loose oyer the limb. With a curse on the part of one, and a groan on tho part of tho other, Col. Mumford and Mr, Milgore laid hold of the rope, and would instantly havo been performing tho ollico of hangman had they not been chocked by anew commotion in the crowd. A rough-looking man, who, in point of strength, seemed to be a very Samson, was lapidly making his way through the assemblage to the treo, slinging to the right and to the left, like foot-balls, all who chanced to stand in his road. In one hand he poised long riile, and in the other he held a huge scalping knife. "Hello, my hearties!" ho oxclaimed "I'm Hill JJlizwml if this'ere ain't carrying tho joke a loetle to fur! In the bungln' bigness, oh Wal, letnme tell yo. you'vo got two of us to hang now or none so pitch in, ef ye think it's healthy."
Ere h® had finished sneaking be bad cut every cord attached to AD Willis, and handod him a horse-pistol. Those of tho crowd who woro standing nearest pressod back a littlo, mechanically, as it were, and, cocking his rille, the speakor continued: "Now, look a-hero! you're all my neighbors, arid I don't .want tor hurt any on yo, but lot nle tell yo, tho fust mother's son on yo who liftsahandagin us two hero, goes up, cortain. 1 tell yo this, so, ef ye get hurt, It won't be fcaid AS how tmuce iala.blauiellI X. Turning to Ab, ho inquired where his gun and accoutorments were. Ab pointed them out in tho hands jpf one of Jthe party, whereupon Dan ordered lhp li®uor to ell tor them up immediately, vowing, at-the »anietlfiio, that tbo least hesitation woiild araso the work to Mffn. Tho gun was promptly handod to its owner without a word, and, remarking that he supposed tlie,-withdrawal,of two from tho ai»sombh*ge would still leave enough to Hnlsh tho business under contract, Dan strodo off toward tho forest, ejosely followed by Ab Willis.
So sudden ana unexpected had this movement been that all see mod paralysed with astonishment. Not a hand was raised lu opposition, aud scarcely a a word was uttered—the only words, perhaps, being now and then a remark from some OHO to tho elloet that he could not have thought such a thing of Dan Houee.
By the time they woro fairly in the woods night had come on, so they made their way to tho family cave. In duo limo Ab gavo a minute history of the day's doings, so far as ho was concerned, to all ef which Dan listened attentively, but- silently, not vonturing an expression In any way, or demonstrating that that the narrative had any effect." upon him whatever but in the morning it found that his thoughts, at. least, Ubd not been idle. Turning to Willis, while they "were at tho morning meal, he said: "I've been thinking All through the night about what happened to you yes tenlay, an' I've cd«jrluled*»ftowl want tersee inter that cave for myself. Them fellers is got my dander «p now, and I'm a-galtr to go for 'em an', ef I don't beat 'em, an' all thar money, an' the like, Dan llouee's a fool-—tlinVs all!"
No words could haw been more cheeking to Ab Willis than these, and it is unnecessary to say that he was soen in readiness to conduct his friend to the cave mentioned nor Is it necessary to sav they were soon there.
They found everything just as Ab had seen it on the day previous, till they came to the last room there he Was enabled to point out a change, for a flat stone some three feet in diameter, lying upon tho floor of the cave near the corner where he bad endeavored to conceal himself, had l»een thrown aside, disclosing* narrow passage down through the rocks. Providing himself with a piece of candle, he proceeded to explore this unknown passage, while Dan stood guard at the entrance.
The cave soon took off and opened out into a moderately sited
room,
in which
was a bed, a table, several chairs, and other pieces of furniture, showing it had been fitted up for human habitation but the inhabitant was nowhere to be s@en. Everything went to indicate that the place had just been vacated and, •since there seemed to be no other outlet, it appeared ns a settled fact that tbc late occupant had gone oot bjHhe sWtae way along which he bad come in.
Having satisfied himself ou Lhe.cpWHtion of a, further passage, Willi# returned and made hia report but Hooce, whose self-conceit was Quite largely developcd, shook his head, and proposed that tho former stand gu*r?l while he! took a look for himself, rematfktfcg that two lioafis weie better than one,
He found the room trraiinatittg cave precisely as Ab had described and all his searching and all hi*cunning could not make it otherwise, so he returned. "Wal," said he, emerging from the narrow passage,

Dan's first thought was that his friend, from some cause or other, bad gone back to the month of the cave, but this conclusion was soon after shaken by his finding upon the floor—first, Ab's extinguished candle, then his fur cap, then marks of a recent struggle, and, finally, a large amount of fresh blood. These told too plainly that foal play had again been the order of the day, and from appearances, he was led to fear that this time the work had been finished. Under the influence of these most gloomy reflections, he passed from the cave and made his way directly to his family^

A NOVEL FUNERAL. A few days ago a veir novel funeral took place in the Blue Mountains. An old woman died, aged eighty-eight. A speculator bad her Jifeinsuredjust six months before for |5,00v. The document, which had to be "signed, sealed and delivered" before she gave her consent to be insured, reads a« follows: hereby ngrees, if Margaret Bandyconsenttfto have her life insured for, $5,000 in his favor, that upon the issue of the policy and the transfer of the same, she shall receive $20 cash, and' a monthly payment of $5 (on the first day of each month) for as long as she lives, and the policy of insurance holds good that when shedi^sthe said will at onee engage a city undertaker, who shall take charge of tier body and keep it as long as possible before putting it on ice. Two reputable physicians in the neighborhood must examine her and determine that she has not been murdered that when they are satisfied she is dead, her body is to bo placcd in an ice box and kept four days it is then to be dressed In whito liuen nnderwear, a black silk shroud, black silk stockings, black silk mitts, and black velvet slippers. A walnut casket is to be provided, silver mounted, with silver handles and silver plate, containing her full name, the date of her birth ana tbe date of her death. Fifteen carriages and a hearse are to be provided. Rev. is to be engaged to preach the sermon, the interment to take place at the Cemetery, and a headstone to cost $75 is to be purchased, and suitably inscribed, with name and dates of birth and death, with the following stanza:—
.5
I)enrest mother, thou hast left us Hor« thy loss we deeply feel, But 'lis God that has bereft UH, I
He can all our sorrows heal. The agreement was carried out the very letter. The old woman lived in a log bouse, and when the plumed horses in the hearse wero drawn up With tbe fancy carriages, and tho silver mounted casket was produced, there was quite a sonsation. When it was learned that there wore only mourners enough to fill three carriages the boys of the neighborhood were loaded up, and before it was over tho funeral was more of a picnic tlran anything else.

History Jt is said, repeats itself. So do stories. "Pshaw exclaims some learned man, as ho sees in tho morning paper a fresh anecdote. "I read that fifty years ago, and it was then ancient." Perhaps ho aid and yet the anecdote may be true as told, though not singular! The qritic should remember tho rulo, as true of men its of mechanics, that like causes under similar circu^nstan^n always produce the same effects. pH
Some years ago, a story went the rounds which told how one ofWo keepers 6f tbe Hartford Insane Asylum saved wit.* strppo cured, to the roof of the asylum.4

The koeper, seeing that the man had suffered a relapse, coolly replied" "Nonsense! Any fool can jump down. Let's descend and jump up. That'll astonish them." "Won't that be jolly! Come along," answered the patient, thrown off his guard. Before he .could trjr the feat, he was securely confined.
Now, a similar story, with different details, however, is told of Sir. Thomas More, the good Lord Chancellor whose head Henry VIII. took'off. He was seated one clay, ou tho roof of his house, when a madman suddenly appeared at his side. "Leap, Tom, leap!" he shouted, seiz ing More by tbo shoulder.
Looking him calmly in tho eye. the Lord.Chan0ellors.aiti, "Lotus first throw .my little dog dow^j au|[ see what sport that will be/'. Irt^i moment the dog was tumbled over the parapet. "Good," said More, with JalgTicd delight. "Now, rniidown, tewm the dog and we'll throw hftn off agaln,"^*
The maniac ran down, and More sum moned his servants to secure him.
&UA VING IN SEVEN KINGDOMS. W. A. CrofTet. I baw now lieen shaved in seven kingdoms, and in six languages. They all perform the ceremony differently/ But they all, from .Scotland to Naples, insist On you Kitting in a plain, straight chair ana bending your head, over beck until, your spine howls with agony* And they all agree in another custom—they never wash off the soap they have put on. But they bring you a bowl of water, hold it unaer your chin as you are leaning back and insist on you washing your own face then and there. If yon object to the attitude, they shrug all the upper part of themselves, and sling a disdainful smile at you if yon comply, little rivulets run pleasantly down inside your shirt, and some o*f the soap they have generally swoggled into your ears gets into your stockings. I have seeu no barber wash his victim's face since I landed in Glasgow. Prices vary. In London they charge a shilling twentyfive cents) for a Ifcaverin Naples they will for tifty «mtimes(ten cents) shave vou, cut your hair, wash your face and bands, curl your eyebrows and wax your moustache till yon look like Victor Emanuel, and can pass for prince on any of the side street X' -Tday I was shaved for ten centime*—about tw* American cents—but I took the balance

A'ltftlo girt "going along Pearfstreet in Albany, her eyes filled with wonder at the emblems of mourning, hurried to her mother and asked "Is everybody dead, mamma?" "How could you think of calling your auntie stupid? Go to her immediately and tell her you are sorry." Fjreddy goes to auntio and says, "Aunty, I am sorry you are so stupid." "What is the meaning- of the word tantalizing?"asked the teacher "Please marm," spoke up little Johnny Holcomb, "it means a circus procession passing the schoolhouse and the scholars not pllowed to look out."
It seems, difficult to: procfuce iritTEfSS' mind of childhood any proper ide#of a first great cause. It is apt to account for things in the simplest possible way and is generally plausible,/though not Id Ways correct. little 'Marife,- though only four sweet summers this side of her birth, had been taught to acknowledge the presenoe of Deity, in everything, but with that stubborness out of which the dogma of total depravil^ grew she ftisistea on putting her own tangible efforts first and unseen influences second- .When out {in the, garden one day digging at the roots of her flowers add watering them, her mother said, "Marie who makes the flowers grow?" She made for reply what a great man grown up people are conceite4enoug to feel, but what very few caflKtO say, misplacing her pronoun and emphasizing nerself, "Well, mother, it's me and Goa that makes 'em grow."
HOW WONDERFUL IS MAN Man, as a physical, intellectual and moral being becomes most completely developed in all his parts and faculties by using daily, at least, one dose of Brown's Iron Bitters. Many thou^gmds are vcady to testify that it is the best medical tonic in tho world! It strength ens every part of the body, and excels everything else in its soothins and refreshing effect on the whole general animal system. «Fon the delicate and complicated difficulties peculiar.to the female constitution, Lydia E.
