A PAPER FOR THE PEOPLE/
A Careless Word.
"It's all that awkward creature's fault J" said Chrissy Vervain, imp* tiently.
Miw Vervain bad been shopping all ilant. At day, and was tired and petu another time ahe would probi leen gracious and forbearing ith the dressmaker's young woman. Now, the least omission or carelessness became magnified in her eyes, into a serious misdemeanor.
She stood in front of the gfeat, glisten
color of a heliotrope bloaaOm, while the timid attendant stood anxiously by. It was her first experience in the show rooms, and she was painfully eager to please. "Doesn't it fit you, miss?" she ventured to ask. "Fit me!" echoed Chriaay, with scornful toss of her pretty young hem). "What a Question Why, the dress is ruined! Where is Mrs. Golden? Do send some one to me that understands her business."
Ho, when Mrs. Golden herself, at the head of the dressmaking ,establishment, hurried In, Chnssy declared the dress was a failure, that shocouldn't, wouldn't and shouldn't wear it! "I do wish, Mrs. Golden," said Miss Vervain, imperiously, "you wouldn't give such valuable material like thi4 into the hands of such an awkward girl. Really, one would think, in an establishment like this, yon would lie a little more particular!" "Indeed timidly spoke up the girl, ."I cut it exactly according to the meas uremeut and—" "Yon will favor me, young woman, by being silent," said Mrs. Golden, who was by far too well versed in the wa of the world to take the part of tJ weaker party. "Let me assure you I have no idoa of losing all my customers through your awkwardness. Go to the work rooms at once. I will see you later in the afternoon. Now, Miss Vervain," altering her voice to a soft and obsequious acccnt, "if you will allow me, I will try to ascertain whether we cannot alter the dross to suit you."
Half an hour later Miss Vervain's carriage, silken cushioned, andlined with downy rugs and fleecy foot muffs, drove away through the orange glitter of the December sunset. "Really," said Chrlssy to herself, as she leaned back and thrust her pinkkidded hands into the little sealskin muff, "the dress wasnt actually spoiled, after nil. That Golden woman is quite a genius in her way and I'm almost sorry that I spoke so pettishly to the little apprentice girl. But when one Is tired

Mrs. Emmons talked mechanically on, and Cbrissy Vervain stood silently looking down upon the pallid, wasted figure in the bed, worn away with slow fever, and murmuring deliriously to herself.
