We wpv he following from Clara Belle's" sprightly letter in the Cincinnati Enquirer:
A silken rainbow of women's underclothes has suddenly appeared in the heavens of fashion, dazzling the gaze of wondering beholders, and giving promise of the Lord knows what next: I have heretofore in these letters written of changeful styles in under garments, but never of any thing like what I am now going to tell about. What do you think of a damsel arrayed in chemise and drawers of pale blue silk? That is what we have come to.
These new garments however, are not all blue thev range through the various fashionable colors, though always in the light and delicate shades. They are not all knit goods understand, hut are cut out of the same sorts of silks that are used for evening dress. Soft Surah silk is often employed for the purpose. There is a lavish trimming of white lace, too, and the shaper are in jaunty keeping with the ravishing nature of these peculiar articles of hidden dress. One suit, for example, was so light a pink that it might easilv match the fair skin of the wearer. Tiie chemise was cut rather low in a heart shape at the breast, and was entirely sleeveless. The opening was edged with narrow law, as were the armholes, and on the top of each shoulder was flat bunch of laoe, crfn-4-ealiiig a button and button hole. Otherwise it was perfectly plain, oxcept for an edge of Inceat the bottom. It was half iUted to the form and quite short. .Some of these undersuits are in demure drabs, with needle-work of the same color, and at the other extreme are Itttt'OKK SHIRTS THAN POLITICIAN KVKIt \VA VKIJ— such llaming shirts as would doom a wearer to instant death if she should walk out in her sleep and meet a bull As a rule, however, the light tints of blue, purple, pink and orange are chosen the bines and niuks being con sidered liecoincing to nlondes and the purples ami oranges for brunettes. How extensively these dainty underclothes are worn it is impossible to tell. That is obvious. Hut the displays in several stores are large and varied and the sales are quite heavy.
Some enthusiastic fashion writers are predicting a revolution underwear, I'he rage for silk material does not point that way in
TIIK ll:NTim'I.NKSH OK AlONKY is Indicated by the greatly increased richness of women's underwear. FonnoiK the care Iwstjnved in this matter reached only to|ueatness—sometimes to embroidery—but hardly ever to thesulsliution of costlier material than cotton. I'he silk chemises mentioned come at $l" ier half dozen. As they are worn next to the skin, it follows that they are soon soiled. They cannot bo washed and if ever used a"second time must In: leaned by a professional dyer, whose
Imrges are high. The extravagance of such articles therefore, amounts to a wanton waste of monev. A belle mav feel good with Surah silk next her skiii as she parades down Hroodway, but the xxjtator can't distinguish her from ther girls whose ixxlies are incased in common fabric. Some have an ambition }oHsess great number of silk hemises, each different from all the rest in color and trimming. Some of these collections do their owners very proud indeed, and are shown to friends about as the autograph-lKiok or the contents of the jewelry-box are displayed. Conversation like this occur in the street. "What's your chemise to-dav, niv deftr?""Cardinal, What's yours?" "Amethyst, with the rutile and Torchon,"
This rage has quite displaced the feminine desire for fanciful stockings, though then* is still plenty of extravagant hosiery.
Some women's main idea in making pumpkin pie is to kill the taste of the inimpkiu with something else.—IVtroit Free Cross.
r. Tlieodoro 1 lively, tobacco and eiitar dealer, lost Seneca street, was recently laid up with rheumatism so that he iHHildn*t walk. After liberal use of various preparations he purchased a bottle of St. .facolts HI, and, to use his own ex res»ion,"It was the first thing to af ord him anything like relief." my
opinion
They say that combination garments of different kinds are to take the place of hemises, drawers, corset covers, petti oats and short petticoats. This may possibly come in the course of time, but the progress is not rapid at present Tiie combination chemise ana skirt fitting the figure by means of darts and side forms, is appropriated and comfort able. With embroidery and lace a1 hand, there need be no lack of beauty or fine finish. They are well suited to silk, forming in that material a chnrmngly jaunty affair. All of the new signs for combination are fastened in front, the combination petticoat having cither one full flounco at the back, or several to give a better outline to flie ostuine. A combination to give short under petticoat consists of a corset cover and an abbreviated skirt, the former having an extra dart underneath the arms, and buttons around the waist. Drossy yokes are made of hornestitclied tucking and lino Torchon, Valenciennes or Italian laee.
