A RECEPTION was tendered one of the classes of Mrs. Aydelotte, at the residence of James Seath last night, and during tneovoniug Mrs. A. was presentcd a handsome pair of vases by the class,

AXDREW J. MILLER sent to the penitentary from this country iii April, 1873, for twenty years, for manslaughter, was pardoned this week. He lived west of Maxville, and, in a drunken quarrel, killed his father-in-law, William Ervin, by striking him in the back with an axe. He was twenty-four years of age at the time of his sentence, and left here a wife and child.

Two more deaths are added to the list caused by the distillery explosion—making eight in all. William Kirtley died of lock jaw on Monday afternoon. He was a son of Lee Kirtley who was killed at the corner of Third and Main streets, soon after tho Avar.

Henry Wilson, fireman of the battery that exploded, died at eight o'clock Tuesday evening. It was thought at first that he" would recover, but his injuries proved more serious than supposed. His death was eauacd by sceptic poison, or poisoned blood.

ASOTUKR fatal accident is Added to the long and remarkable list that have recently occurred in this vicinity. At four oVIook every morning a train is run from this dty to Grecncostle for the coel trade. On Tuesday morning the engine, No. 1$. was fired np as osoal in round bouse, and ran to the fuel sheds east of the machine shops. While standing there the boiler exploded. John Brake, the fireman, was standing in front of the fire box, and was thrown against the ooal on the tender. He was so bruised and scalded that death came at nine o'deck. Engineer Gorhaxn Smith had just climbed the ftrace at his house, only a wjuare away, end was walking toward the engine. John Brake was abont forty years of age, and leaves a wife aad spheral children. He came here recently from Indianapolis. THE long talked History of Vigo and Parke counties is at last out of press and is now being delivered to subscribers, by the publishers, H. H. Hill A Co., of Chicago. They have more than filled their promise. The volume has been swelled to a book of 1,300 pages, onethird larger than was contemplated Modi of the work for Vigo county was done by the late Judge Gookins, and that of Parke county by J. H. THE old "Crumbs of Comfort" crow has been reorganized under the high sounding tittle of "The Diana Hunting and Fishing Club." and will go down the river next week on the annual hunting and fishing excursion. They will he gone for about fen days and will go below Yinoennees. The officers are Jno. O. Williams, captain of the steamer and president of the club J. F. Gulick, treasurer, E. W. Ross, Jquartermaster Chauncey Twaddle, pilot.

A NUMBER of Quakers are asking the city and county authorities for the use of the pest house on north Third street, which they propose to convert into an orphan asylum. It is too large for the purpose designed, and should be put to some I good use.

A LADY on north Second street has] strong faith in Tho Mail as an advertising medium. Within the past year she has advertised in these columns a lost I shawl, a lost veil, and last week a lost deg. All were promptly found, the dog I being ton miles west of the city. The Mail goes everywhere in this neck o' woods. "Miss SCUDDKR please don't whip me] and I'll givo you a half a dollar!" was the agonizing plea of a boy in school the other day. Another teacher was tanning the jacket of a pupil in the presence of Mr. Greenwalt, tho principal, when tho boy with atone of mingled appeal and reproach exclaimed "Mr. Greenwalt liaven't you any feeling for a feller?"
