LK A BOUT HOME

After all, when one comes to think of it, there are not many homes. There are, of critwre, innumerable places which go by the name of homes. called so for a want of abetter designation, or because everybody calls the place where he eats and sloops "home but when you comedown to the real sober fact, homes are comparatively Honrce.

A home is a refuge place from the stortuH, the fret and worry of life. It is place where the husband comes home to a sanctuary, where Rtniles and loving urordu answent his tmiilo and loving greeting. It is a place where the wife ittlgnsjn her lxwiightity and grace not it may be, the grace of outward beauty, or cultivation, but of true women hood, •where fdio receives honor and love even BSKlic gave them both. It i# a place •where children are happier than anywhere else in the work!, because there arc the hcericKt words, the brightest looks :md the kindest act». Such are not the majority of homes* aa we find them.

How d'tM it happen that when you see a real home, a light, pleasant »pot where everyone seems to i»e happy whore if ihuHband and wife have misunderstanding, no one seonis to know it whore laughter and Hiniles are perpetual guests, "why (1 'ei it strike one an pecular and noticabie? Simply because there are so lew of them. will not ask you to think of your own home. Let "us indulge in the"luxury talking about our neighlxirw' There is Mr. Smith's house. What are

Jlim

rour Moan about this home? You see go in at nightfall, looking used

by tln wear of the day, and if you could Btopin with Mr. Smith, and liethoreaii invisible presence, I don't lieiicve you "Would

wholly charmed with the look

of think')-..

Possibly the

first

words of

Mr. Smith are directed indelinitelv "Whin'siiU thin noi*t about? I don wee why these children are kicking up such The said children taketh hint iind move out of the way, not think ing—for wlileh they are pardonable—to Bay "'J od evening1' to their father. noon "M ttles" them. Tlie family sit down to the evening meal. Mr. Smith Jeeln tired, and don^ care to talk. Tho children iuivesomething to say, but they long ago that father does not care to bo iMjthercd with their tales of school, nor to !te nsked 'piestions alK)ut kites and balls, lie has forgotten all he knew about them. They, sensibly enouuh keep still. tho whole they have, ii not lfld, a very stupid time of it. Tii family is a coinpanv of animals, who f*ed and leave when tfiey have had enough. They do not know precisely what

do with themselves: so they

mojic about, and are glad to go to lxxf, though they don't want to go, except to OHeajxi the dullneas,

Now, tiiis is not a beautiful picture, but is it a very uncommon ono? A honest eonfesslen would tell of more homes of that sort than of hotter ones Are they real homos?

A Fruit MAIiltlAtt'E.

Says a contributor to tho Philadelphia Times: It isu grave mistake when a woman after marriage, and particularly after the children, loses birth of tho great world which

her interest in lies outsido her

home and her pride in her own appoar mice. Many women who, if they allowed themselves to lxi known, woufd bo not olilv charming uiumtHira of society but actual powers for tho advancement of those with whom they would lieassoci ated, retIre as within a shell, and are appreciated only in tho privacy of do mestie life. Of course there are Yirouni stances where a woman has no time or Htrength to givoto anything outsido her home, and whoso faithful 'pcrforinanco of the "daily round, the common task demand* that sheshalldo nothing more All honor to her. 1 do not sneak of her but of those catMible of much more, who are nmled to give tono to society, and who excuse themselves bv thinking that It i* devotion to husband and child while it is only an e^alt^d kind of sol Hshin-ss. I low njany we |ee,» lib, when their children la?etfic bin hOineand •when there is no longer astern necessity for their occupying themselves with hard work, seem utterly at a loss as to what hoy shall do. They have no inter ests outside of their narrow circle, in tense though they may be in that. It ought to 1h regarded as the duty of every woman to take an active interest in something, and she fhortlU cultivate a taste for things which $ho can enjoy as well at sixty years as at twenty-live." Of all persons a wife and mother ought to try to retain her good looks, and to add to" her attractions by becoming and tasteful dress, it is not a virtue for her to deny herself all except the mere necessities that the ahildron may be better dressed. She may do much more tVr her family bv tei*ng an individual not simply a feeble echo of her huslxtnd or her oiliest son. In one of the happiest homes 1 haw ever known about, tho wife was a Presbyterian and Republican and the husltand an Kpiscopalian and Democrat there were always fresh thoughts in that houses mother's opiu ion was as eagerly sought as father's, and manly soiis went out to do bettor work than they would have done if they hail not known that father and mother would estimate at its roal value whatever they might do. We might be happier if we would, and healthier too, for mind often sustains l»odv in away we do not understand. Gvvtho never said anything wiser than that "In the great world one may make a small one of his own."

MAKE THE HOUSEBEA UTJF1JL. Art Amateur. A charming manner of decorating a panel on a wall, or tint pier between two windows, is to cover the space to be ornamented with tulle, the meshes of which are as large aa possible. This at a distance does not hide tho painting or the naper on tho wall, and it makes an excellent groundwork on which autumn leaves and ferns can be pinned to form very ornamental designs.

Capital fern baskets may be made with old cords, which are broken into rough pieees and strung on wire, which has been molded into the proper shape required. The corks sometimes are threaded whole, and then cut with a very sharp knife to reaemblo carving, after the rashfbn of a cork walking stick. Again, the pieees of corks threaded on wire may be wound around a big wire basket, the handle being formed the same way.

Picture scraps mav be often used with capital effect. Small rooms, and nurseries, especially, papered with them and afterward varnished, afford great entertainment cornices may be made of them to run all around the wall paper, with about two inches of gold foil between each, and a black bordering. Wooden li re boards and Holland mats may be covered with them these must, of course be varnished.

Common garden flower pots can be made ornamental by giving them a coat of mint and tbon painting on them landscapes, flowers, or figures. Cheap wooden wardrobes and other articles of furniture can be improved by painting them black and ornamenting tho panels with flowers, rathor larger than life, storks and bulrushes, sunflowers and llllies, large daisies, and poppies, all look well.

Bleached skeleton ferns may be laid on photograph book covers, wooden sand blotting books, and var

trays and blotting books, and varnished. Tlioy look especially well on black jiaintetl wood If laid close together thoy resemble an inlaying of ivory. A plain table with ono drawer makes quite a pretty writing table by staining it black and then laying tho ferns on a border! round tho top and around tho drawers. The ferns can also bo applied to velvet I frames, wbeu the work should be covered with white tullo of the finest and I most invisible description. A blue velvet covered board, for ]lacing in a lireplace during sumnior, may have a centre I boucjuot of skeleton ferns, lightly eoverod with tulle and a border of lace quite at tho edge.

Ague Cure

ft purely vegotolle bitter aud powerful tonic, anil Is warranted a Hpeodv anil rertafn cum for Fever and Ague, Chillis and Pever, Intermittent or Chill Fever, Remittent Fever, Dumb Ague, Periodical or miiotiA Fevor, and all malarial disorders. In miasmatic districts, Hie rapid nulse, coated tongue, thirst, lassitude, loss of appetite, pain in tho back and loins, add coldness of tile spine and extremities, are only premonitions of Hi'vorer symptoms, wliirh terminate in the :t#te paroxysm, sttereetied by high fever and profuse perspiration.

It is a startling fact, that quinine, arsenic and other jioisonous minerals, form the »»asis of most of the "Fever and Ague Preparations," SpecifJes," "Bynips," and "Tonics," in the market. The preparations made from the*e mineral poisons, although they are palatable, and may break tlw chili, do not aire, but leave the tuuiariai and their own drug poison in
