BT A FAMILY DOOTOB.
.* Whoever, wishes to,thoroughly enjoy -.*5 bis autumnal trip or holiday, and gain \health therefrom, will do
well
first and
foremost to consider where and bow be shoald spend It. Probably it woald be as well to consult bis own physician, to tell the doctor exactly bow be feels, and get bis advice as to whether a relaxing, bracing, or sedative climate is most suitable for his special oase: whether there should be during the holidays as much moving about possible and as much change of scene, or whether it •would be better to seek out some quiet healthy watering-place, and there, far from business oare and worry, enjoy in peace the dolce far niente..
One object of the invalid—for such it is best for the reader bis destination with as little trouble and fatigue as possible. He ought not to lumber himself -witb to much
la a:
gage be ought to pack
at least a week before starting, making sure be forgets no necessary, and he should never trust to getting articles he wants at the place be is going to. To be sure, be may procure them, probably by paying two prices, but at the very moment he may want to use some ltttle luxury, he mav find it most inconvento have to send out for It. Many parcels and packages are to be avoided. Flannels are never to be forgotten, for even in places wbere the sun is warmest during the day, it will ususlly be found that the mornings and evenings are chilly, damp, and dangerous. People who are reckless and as to their clotning seldom escape learning one good thought somewhat severe lesson, which generally serves them for the rose of their lives.
Take any medicine witb you that your doctor may think suitable to your casev but do not forget that in autumn, especially by the sea-side, one is liable to several ailments, which, taken in time, are easily remediable. One or two of them it is my duty to specially mention, and the intending tourists will do well to be forearmed, and take in his chest tho medicines I recommend for their cure.
Feverisboess (febricula) may be caused in many ways, but means ought to be taken for its subjection. The symptoms aro unhappy too well know to need description the sense of uneasiness, tbe nervousness, excitability, the feeling of pain and soreness ascribed to tbe bones, and the high temperature, are familiar to us all. Good will generally be done by sponging tbe body witb cold water aud toilet vinegar. Perfect quiet and rest should be obtained tbe room in which the patient lies should be psrtially darkened only if tbe light annoys him. but very well ventilated. Gold acidulate* drinks should be taken, and a dose of Rocheile salts. Oranges may be par taken of if found agreeable, and tbe food be giveu on tbe plan of little and often, but at tho same time It should be palatable, easy of digestion, and nu tritious. This treatment will remove simple fever in a day or two, and if it does not, the servioes of a medical man are to be procured, and bis advice fol lowed, not only as regards pbysio, but food and drink.
A bottle of salt voltrile is useful in uiany ways—for faintnesa, acidity of the seorotions, common colds, etc. it should therefore always find a place, well secured in a stoppered Dottle, in the medicine chest. Care ought to be taken during an autumn holiday not to expose any portion of the body to draughts when heated and fatigued. If oola is thus caught, an extra or a warmer flannel should be worn, tbe feet and legs should be bathed well at night in hot water and mustard, and a sleeping draught should be taken—not a narcotic from the ohemlst, but simply a bottle of lemonade witb a little good whiskey in It. Put an extra blanket on tbe bed, take an aperient pill, and next day guard the system from exposure.
Some people aro troubled during the autumn holiday, especially if the weather be very warm, with what is known as priokly-beat the skin of the arms or chest beootries covered with reddish points, tingling and burning, A little cooling medicine should be taken, simpler diet, less exercise, and lighter under-clothing. Quinine pills area good tonlo, and the good effects of thts medicine are inoreassed by the morning oponge-batb, only the skin should be dried without much rubbing, and with a soft towel.
We all know how disagreeable a thlni chafing of the skin is, and simple thougl the aliment be, it can yet to a great ex tent mar the enjoyment of our autumn holiday. It is best prevented by great cleanliness and the use of Castile soa for the batb, with little friotlon, mod erate exercise, and the avoidance of rough under-clothing next to tbe skin some light astringent ointment, such as the bensoated oxide of xlno, should be used, or tbe chafed surface should be dusted with a mixture of nine and chalk, procurable at any respectable chemist's shop.
When going on a holiday do not for get to take three or fournioe bath towels with you, and also a good large bath sponge, with an iudla-rubber-lined bag to contain It. Let your chest also contain plenty of light warm socks, light shoes, strong walkiug shoes, and slippers, a soft hat, and a straw hat, if you care to wear .such at all events, pay

articular attention to the comfort of and feet. You will not forget umbrella and waterproof, the latter only to be worn In a shower and I may here iiv a word In favor of paper collars and fronts. They are not only handy, but the paper front is the best chest-pro-tector possible, and I do not hesitate to say that the wearing of them when traveling would oftentimes ward off attacks of chest disease, and probably save valuable Uvea.
I leave it to the reader himself, or to his physician to ebooee his place of abode during the autumn holiday but advise him to avoid all kinds I sincerely Of hurry
ana
excitement, wuetaer in
traveling or doing anything else, to avoid the use of stimulants, to beware of cold, wet draughts, or too much sunshine. RM* betimes, always at the same

digest. Coffee la better for breakfast than tea fish, too, shoald always be eaten with this meal, with a fair allowance of good bread and butter, and It is an excellent plan to finish up with a tumberfat of cool, rich milk. This, even in tbe most braefog climate, should sustain one till about 1 30 p. m., the beat hour for luncheon. If faint between meals, a little lemonade and a dry biscoit should be tsken, but beer greatly disturbs the process of digestion, and spirits are apt to unnecessarily augment the flow pf the gastric juloe, and in delicate constitutions to cause acidity of tbe stomach, witb flatulence. Tbe luncheon should be fairly substantial, and soup therewith does good. If a feeling of weariness follows tbis meal, one ought to lie down for an hour but whether or not, no exercise should be taken after lunch, for some time, at least. Dinner may be taken at six o'clock. It should never be hurried. Cheerful company at din ner is a great aid to digeetion. While at tbe seaside one may partake with benefit of several dishee, including soup and white fish, and concluding with light puddings and fruit. The best ve etables are potatoes, greens, peas (if agree), spinach, and raw tgmatoee. The last is a most invaluable blood purifier. ____________
THE WIFE'S CLAIMS. You area man of business, and havo no time to show attention to your wife few opportunities to converse with ber at least you make few. She submits to tbis unsocial state of things because she must, but is she happy? Probable not no woman likes to be considered a oipber. Your wife ought to be your adviser. She ooght to oe your best confidential counsellor. Tbe self conceit of men amounts to genius. There are many husbands who woald as soon think of taking advice of their children as of their wives. Bat it Is only the fool who is too wise to seek counsel. A wornyou say, knows very little about business nevertheless, her intuition is often better than a man's judgement. Your wife is your partner. You have earned tbe money, but she has saved and sacrificed and pinched and worried and worked to help accumulate it. She has done her fair share toward making your property what it is she has a right to be consulted how It shall be used. A double right has she to have her judgement weighed and measured in all questions rotating to tbe disposition of tbe family and the training and calture of tbe children. Talk to your wife on all occasions. When yon come home at night, tired witb tbeoares efthe day, to find her equally fatigued, bring ber the
news of the day bring the latest, fresh est thought. In buying your paper, or subscribing for your monthly magizine, or renewing your religious weekly, get what suits, ner needs and meets ber tastes. There is aidre in that patient, quiet, silent wife of yours than you think do not freeze her very individuality by your practical contempt of woman.
SENSIBLE ADVICE.
A lady writes thus very sensiblv to a Western paper: "Make home a home, and make it one in every sense of the word. My husband is a great smoker: he loves to play cards, dominoes and chess he is at perfect liberty to smoke in any room in tbe house, and am always ready to join him In tbe different games. I endeavor In every way to be not only a helpmate, but a companion to him, and tbe result has been that I have and enjoy his society. He prefers spending his evenings at home with me to seeking other society. I cannot understand why women will run the risk of losing their husbands' sooiety and love merely for the sake of satisfying an over fastidious taste. If they do not like tobacco, did they object to nte using it during their oourtehlp? And if they objected then and failed, why did they marry If men will not give up such habits at the solicitations of their sweethearts, it is not likely they will be persuaded out of them by their wives. Therefore I think It unwise for a woman to risk her happiness by quarreling with her husband over a venal fault the existence hud extent of whlohshe knew and perfectly understood before she took upon herself the duties of a wife."
ANTS.
"there Is only one way to get rid of ants. Get ready tea kettles of boiling water, plenty of It. Go oat of doors, look carefully over the paths, walks and flagging, and In the areas, back and front. Scald every little hole you see with a mound of earth pellets round It: it is the home of the ant. On sunny days these pellets are brought out of the nests to dry. When the weather is dsmp, or soon to be so. yon will see nothing bnt little holes In the ground. The ants are all home. Scald them. If your cellar Is not oemented, hunt tbe pests there very likely yon will find plenty. When this has been done, clean out your olosets, sugar palls and everything in the olosets rub fine salt on the shelves, lay clean yellow paper on them, put back the dishes. In the cracks of the floor and around the surbase of said closets should be placed ground red paper. Ants will not come again for a long time if they should come in a few months renew the scalding.
HUSBANDS AND WIVES, A good husband makes a good wife. Some men can neither do without wives nor with them they are wretched alone in what is called single blessedness, and they make their homes miserable when they get married they are like Tomklns'aog- wulch could not bear to be loose, and howled when it was tied up. Happy bachelors are likely to be happy husbands, and a happy huaband is tbe happiest of men. A well matehed couple carry a joyful lite between them, as the two spies carry tbe duster of Eshcol. They area brace of birds of Paradise. They multiply their joys by sharing them, and lessen their troubles by dividing them this is fine arithmetic. The wagon of oare rolls lightly along aa they atl together and when ft drags a little leavlly, or tbere'a a hitch anywhere, they love each other all the more, and ft
so lighten the labor.

Now,
