WHAT OF TMXA8!
Editor Terre Haute Mall: Having just returned from the South, where we spent some five months to recuperate my health, and being so often inquired of "what of Texas," I thought best to give one general answer through your widely circulated paper to aatisfy the many inquirers for information as to what I think of that genial climate, and also of the state of society there.
San Antonio, where we spent the most of our time, is tbe county ssat of Bexar county, is an old Spanish town containing some 25,000 inhabitants, and spreading over more ground than this dty, is wstered by a river of the same name which boils out of tbe earth some four miles above tbe dty, and by its serpentine wanderings is contained several miles indde of the dty limits, whloh are beautifully and* aubatantially bridged with some eight or ten Iron bridges for vehicles, besides several foot bridges for pedestrians only. There to also a small stream of Water called San Pedro river, which flows through that quAintolc dty, and besides these streams of water they have some forty miles of irrigating csnals, which sre very benefidal to vegetation in that tropical region, and they also have the benefit of an excel lent system of water works.to oool snd moisten tbe thirsty earth when necessary
The gentle zephyrs are generously laden with the sweet perfume of lovely flowers, which bloom nearly the entire year. They have quite a variety of flowers snd tropical plsnts, but the most besutifUl of all are their roees, and especially thdr running roses, o« the purest white and gold oolor. They are too beautiful to describe—they must bessen to be appredated.
San Antonio is the second dty ia population in Texas, and the flint in point of e. It is a great wool, hide and iummarket, and 1s the great trading int for West and Southwest Tbxas. has the Alamo—the altar of Texan liberty. And that you may judge of ita badness capadty and also of the capadty of its people for pleasure, I will simply state that it supports dxiy-two attorneys besides some thirteen real estate Man. Anita support of my assertion of thevapacity af ita people.lor pleesure, I ..art 11 inform you that .they support fifty-seven haflks^asd I havejso -doubt but the latM^ilipa»liuu of. them will eompsre*faflbrably wim,Ahose of our Nation's Metropolis bssides private carriages snd a bus line they have street rsilwsys. And as a health resort I believe it is unsurpassed in and atoout.tbat locality. And. what ahali I say of^tbft awfatfty and dviUty of her people Shall I state facts, as I have seen snd witnessed them in both plaoes? loan not do otherwise than state the truth, and yet I must do it with regret and shame that I moat acknowledge that our dtisens are so for below tnem in the scale of morality. Our beautiful Prairie City to indsed lovely in appearance, but I must confess with humiliation that it reminds me of the wbited sepulchres that we read of—while the outside apranoe is pure and lovely, the inside llled with corruption and lmpuritiee.
peai isfl
During ourstsy in the Alamo citv I neither saw, nor heard of a drunken fight, nor saw an inebriate, either staggering on tbe streets, or in tbe gutters, never heard a white man swear an oath, snd only one boy ewear once. Persons on those nsrrow streets and sidewalks are seldom, if ever, annoyed with disgusting scenes of this obaracter. And while we claim so much higher civilization here, we dsre not dose our eyes in slumber, "Natures sweet restorer," without being behind looks snd bar*f ofraribtis*ftind8, while in tbat old fliity snob dotdo Botjui to be unknown only in history. Daring our stay there, we occupied a large room on tbe ground floor with four very large outside open ings, with blinds on that a ten year old obild could open easily, two ot those were doors, and we never closed them when tbe westher wss suffliently wsrm to bsve them open, and we enjoyed peaceful slumber without fesr of molestation all the while.
Tbe oause of all tbis evil is, the carse is upon us, tbe scourpe of the race, tbe rof civilisation—tbe Demon of tbe Still! For what man Is there that can enter your peaceable dwelling at the dead hour of midnight and for "filthy lucre" rob you of life, imbrue bis hsnds in the blood of tbe innooent, were he in sober senses? None, I think, are so blsck hearted snd cruel, bnt His whst be drinks tbst renders him brutal and beast-like. Think of tbis, young msn, before you have taken passage on the downward train. I beg of you. But I do not wish to be unaeiatood that the people of that old dty do not drink any not so: but they seem to know when to stop before they beoome intoxicated. While I think drinking to a dreadftil dn, in their folly there to tbat redeeming trait, they seem to know when to stop after tbey have commenced.
Their children, also, seem to be better roverned tbsn ours sre. They were not the streets, filling tbe sir snd msklng it blieous with their osths and fmf recations, nor were they found tresspassing on their neighbors' premisee, to rob them of their fruit, flowers, eta. and in sll that I saw snd heard I sm led to conclude tbst their citizens sre a peaceful, law-abiding people.
It is the U. S, military headquarters of thst department, and I have iieard that on pay day tbe men indulge a little, but not to the extent they would if they were where this dn wss countenanced more it restrains them to a great e*
Since my return home havejraflered more with tbe heat than before, and have longed for those delightful Gulf breezss thnt are so pure tbst they can bsnic up freeh meats in the air without salt snd it will not spoil, but will dry nicely and under tbat tropical sun there is no such thing as sun stroke. Men osn work on tin rooflrg snd not feel tbe heat oppresdve like tbis dimate, fat there to such a refreshing breese all the time. Bnt I will not add more as my letter to too long already.
Yours, etc., M. F. JU
