HOUSE CLEANING.
OLD TIME OESCrtlfTieN OF THES «BfcING DISEASE.
ing article -from tbe pen of Bsqjamin
failing article in tbe marriage treaty is, that the lady shall have and eojoy the free and unmolested exercise of the rignts of white-washing, with all its ceremonials, privileges, appurtenances. A young woman would forego the most I advantageous connection, and-even disappoint tbe warmest wish of her heart,
rather than resign the invaluable right! f®ver
The husband gone, the ceremony begins. The walls are in a few minutes stripped of their furniture pointings, prints, arid looking-glasses, i« a huddied heap about the floors the-ourtains are torn from tbe testers, tbe beds cram, ed into tbe windows: chairs and tablesbedsteads and cradles, crowd the yard and the garden fence bends beneath tbe weight ot carpets, blankets, cloth ploaks. old coats, and ragged breeches. Here may be seen the lumber of the kitchen, forming a dark and confused mass for tbe foreground of the picture, grid irons and frying pans, rusty shovel* and broken tongs, spits and pots, Joint tools, and the fractured remains of rush-bottomed oh aire. There a -closet has disgorged Its bowels, cracked tum-
•forgotten physic, or unknown powders, seeds and dried herbs, handfuls of old «orks, tops of teapots, and stoppers of departed decantersfrom tbe rag ihole In the garret to the rat bole in tho cellar, no place escapes uurulnmaged. It would seem as if the day of general doom was oome, and the utensils of Hho house were dragged forth to judge* moat.
This ceremony completed, aud the house thoroughly evaouated, the next operation is to smear the walls and ceilings of every room and closet with brushes dipped in a solution of lime, called white-wash to pour buckets of water over every floor, and scratch all tho partitions ana walnscoats with rough bruwhes wet with soap-suds, and dipped In stone cutters sand. The windows by no itKtnns escspo the general deluge. A servaot scrambles out upon the pent house, at the risk of her neok, and with 'a mug in hor hand, and a bucket within reach, she dashes away innumerable gallons of water against the glass panes to the great annoyance of the passengers In the street. I have been told that an "i action at law was onoe brought against tone of these water nymphs, by a person
Who had a juqw suit of clothes spoiled by thin operation but, after long argument, it was determined by tbe whole court, that the action would not lie, in as much as the defendant was in the exorcise of a legal right, and not answerable for tho consequence: and so tho poor gentleman was doubly nonsuited for he lost not only his suit of olothes, but his uult at law.
These smear lugs aud scratching^, washings and dashings, beiug duly performed, the next ceremonial is to cleanse and replace the distracted furniture. You may have seen a house raising, or a ship launch, when all the hands within reach are collected together recollect If you can. the hurry, bu$tte, confusion, and noise, of such a Hceno, and you will bave some idea of his cleaning match. The misfortune that tho sole object is to make things clean it matters not how many useful rnamental or valuable, articles are mutilated, or fuller death under the operation a mahogany chair and carved frame undergo the same discipline they [are to be made clean at all events bnt Uheir preservation is not worthy of at* :'ttUon. For instance, a Que large ennri„tiftii Xl *tfnan iFLTSX I
end of May is most generally Used up- ^e preparation of their daily food on for tbe purpose. The attentive bus-
the lady is unusually fretful, finds fault with tiie servants, is discontented with tbe oblldren, and complains muoh of the filtbinesH of every thing about her— these are signs which ougbt not to be neglected yet they are not decisive, as they sometimes come on oad go of! again, without producing any farther effect. But if, when the husband'rises in tb* morning, be should observe in tbe yard a wheel-barrow with a quantity of lime in it, or snould see oertain buckets with lime dissolved in water, there is then no time to be lost he immediately locks up the apartment or closet where his papers or bis private property are kept, and, putting the key in his pocket, betakes himself torflight for a husband, however beloved, beoomes a perfect nuisance during this season of ietnale rage his authority is superceded, his commission is suspended, and the scullion who cleans the brasses in tbe kitchen beoomesof more consideration and importance than him. He has no resource bnt to abdicate, and run from an evil which he cao neither prevent nor mollify.

Pork should never be eaten except in the fall and winter. Teal should be avoided in summer. When meat comes into tbe bouse it sbocld be at once hung up in a cool, dry place, until wanted.
In no other land tiban ours is there such profusion and variety of food, and certainly there is no other where there is so much waste earned byindifferenee, carelessness and gross ignorance of the principles which oagiit to govern the preparation of food.
Tbe tirst green vegetable tin market Is I tbe pie plant or rhabarb and very tart and delicious it is, and very wholesome after all tbe fatty sulMtanoes of oar winter diet. So we tbisk, bnt here comes the query: Is rbnfaarb wholesome. "Every once in awhile there appears a newspaper paragraph stating that the aoldity of rhubarb stalksds due to Oxalic Acid, and therefore fioisonous. Tbis would be "importaat if true," but fortunately for those wfcoifind in rhubarb a most acceptable substitute for fruit, it Is not true. The acidity is due to a mixture of Malic and Citric-acids the one being tbe acid of apples and the other the aoid of lemons.''
There is no time oftfee (fear when potatoes are not an aoeeatable article of diet: "A common disk lor common people, many think, especially if cooked unpeeled. Not if yo«i iknow how to cook them. Many people boil them in a great pot of water, and let them stand In that water after they are cooked. Always try to have potatoes of uniform size: cut out any rough places made by moles or worms place them in a pot, and merely cover them in water keep tbe lid on, and do not jet them stop boiling. Boil 15 or If minutes, until
biers, broken wine glasses, pbdals of done pour off any water which may rer. .. i.
mala, and let them begin to dry In a pot over a slow fire thus vou have a "dainty dish to set before a king."
HOW TO STRENGTHEN AND EXI PAND THELUNQS. Those in wealthy olrcumstanc&for who pursue sedentary employments within doors, generally oae lungs but very little—breathe but very little air into the chest, and thus Independently of positions, oontract a wretohedly narrow, small ohest, and lay the foundation for the loss of health and beauty. All this can be perfectly obviated by a little attention to the manner of breathing. Recollect, the longs are like a bladder in their structure, and can be stretched to double their ordinary sixe with perfect safety, giving a noble chest and a perfect immunity from consumption. The agent, and the only agent, required is the common air we breathe, supposing, however that no obstacle exists external to the chest, such as lacing, or tying it around with stays or tight dress or have shoulder straps upon it. On rising from bed in tbe morning place yourself in an ereot position, your head thrown baok and ahovlders entirely of! your chest now inhale or suck in all the air you can, so as no more air can be got in now hold your breath and throw your arms off behind, holding in your breath as long as possible. Repeat these long breaths as many times as you please. When done in a cold room it is much better, because the air is much denser and will act more powerfully in expanding the chest. Exercise tbe chest in this manner it will become very flexible and expansible, and will enlarge the capacity, and sise of tbe lungs.
In washing painted walls it is a good plan to remove from the room every thing tbat can be injured by steam and then hang sheets wrung from hot water In tbe room. The vapor condensing on the walls softens the dirt and it may be wiped off with woolen olotbs wrung from soda water. Ceilings tbat bave been smoked by a kerosene lamp should be washed off with soda water. If the wall about the stove b&s been smoked by the stove, cover the black patches with gum shellac and tbey will strike through either paint or kalsomine.
