A PAPER FOR THE PEOPLE,
ABOUT WOMEN.
A somewhat extravagant exchange describe* "some Jlusdoos croquet hosiery.
When a woman no longer blushes sbe has lost the most powerful charm of beauty.
M. Kenan says that a girl who ft not allowed to have a doll will become •onr, nervobs woman.
Chicago has seven medical colleges in most of which women stand on tbe same footing as men.
The ladies giv® as a reason for marry ing for money, that tbey now seldom flnd anything else in a man worth having.
Tbe New York Herald bas raised more than |300,000 for tbe Irish relief fond, and a woman in that city couldn'i go to churcb last Sunday because her bonnet was six weeks old. We little dream, wbile assisting others, of tbe suffering at our own doors!
London Truth tell® tbis story of one of the queen's receptions: "Ladies were not less doccollotee at this second drawing room tbau at tbe first. One, in preying forward, positively loBt tbe wholo of the upper part of her dress and hHri to be shrouded in shawls."
Tbe average wife can lay ber hands on about 1,000 receipts for cookery, and tbe average family clings to tbe same dishes known tor three generations past. Tbe married daughter who bad a good cook mother prides herself on following her methods, andsucb agrad uate is worth far more than she who is a slave to tbe receipt book through Ignorance.
The latest Invention for the embellish ing of female beauty is tbe nose extender, the invontion of a dentist, and no doul soon to be much used. It consists of two silver frames colored rose insido, which can be pressed into the nostrils, and by gradually changing tbe shape finally bold it in the most approved form. A flat snub can be transformed to most classic of Grecians. Sober earnest!
WOMAN.
Somebody writes that the higher and more perfeot the intelecual and physical training a woman receives In all those essentials which are womanly, the better wife and mother she is prepared to become. A woman with an educated mind and an educated heart and who understands the law of her being and is willing to obey it—is virtually an angel. Sbe draws all within the radius of her influence towards her, and as tbe dew and the light of the sun impart beauty and strength to tbe flowers, so she lifts them up to tbe plain of thought and aotion in wblob she dwells, and makes thom abiding in tbe graces of ber accomplishments.
Sbe will not want for a suitor, nor for one who will prove unworthy of her, for there are many good men in tbe world, and by tbo law of mutual attraction, a man after her own heart will find her. and tbe violets and the lilies will tell all the rest.
Sensible men, such asUod bas made to love a faithful wife, cannot be blinded by glitter, nor the soft rustle of silks, softened by draperies of "real lace," and embellished with tbe gleam of costly jewels. Theso do not constitute a a wife, and tbe noble man turns from them in disgust in his search for tbe actual woman. The man who will make 1 a good husband, and-is worthy of a good woman, carries deep In his heart a lovo
Of homo and real womanhood. It Is the duty of all true womon to call out tbis fooling in men. This action is necessary land pervading one and should be exerpoised In proportion as they value their personal happiness, tbe improvement of slety and the prosperity of tbe world. writer, whs knows something of Sociology and mannerisms of tbe heart has said,
Men are what womon make thom." This is as true as if it bad been recorded In the Book of Ruth. If tbey have rood husbands, tbey, too, must be good, «Wire and true to every law of health, lentnl and physloal.
HOW THEY PART.
Tbis is the way two married women generally take leave of each other: "Good-by!" *. "Good-by! Come down aud see us

ANOTHER LIBBL ON WOMAN. When a woman has a sew pair of shoes sent home she performs al together differently from a .man. Sbe never shoves her toes into them and and yanks until she is red in tbe faoe and all out of breath, and then goes stamping and kicking around, bat carefully pulls them on part way, twitches them oft again to take & last look and see that she bas got the right ore, pulls them on again, looks at them dreamily says they are jast right, then takes aaother look, stoops suddenly to smooth out a wrinkle, twists around and sur veya tbem sideways, and exclaims. "Mercy, how loose they are!" looks at them again square In front, works her foot around so tbey won't hurt her quite so mncb, takes them off, looks at the heel, tbe toe, the bottom and tbe inside, puts them on again, walks up and down tbe room onoe or twice, remarks to her better half that she won't have them at any price, tilts down tbe mirror so sbe can see how they look, turns in every possible direction and nearly dislocates her neck tryiog to see how they look from that way, backs off, steps up again, takes thirty or forty farewell looks, says tbey make her feet look awful big, and never will do in the world, puts them off and on three or four times more, asks her husband what be thinks about It, and then pays no attention to what he says, goes over it all again, and finally says sbe will take tbem. It's a very simple matter indeed.
NEWLY MARRIED COUPLES. Golden Age. It is the happiest and most virtuous state of society in which the husband and wife set out together, make their property together, and, with perfect sympathy of soul, graduate all their expenses, plans, calculations and desires in reference to their present means and to Ibelr future and common interest.
Nothing delights man more than to enter tbe neat little tenement of tbe young people who within perhaps two or tbree years, without any resources but their own knowledge of industry, have joined heart and hand, engaged to share together the responsibilities, duties, interests, trials and pleasures of life. The industrious wife is cheerfully employing her bands in domestic duties, putting her house in order or mending ber husband's clotbcs, or pre paring dinner, wbile perhaps the little darling sits prattling on tbe floor or lies sleeping in tbe oradle, and everything seems preparing to welcome the bap leat of husbands and tbe best of athers when he shall come home from bis toil to enjoy tbe sweets of bis little paradise.
Tbis is tbe true domestic pleasure Health, contentment, love, abundance and bright prospects are all here. But it has become a prevalent sentiment that a man must acquire bis fortune before be marries that the wife must have no sympathy nor share with him in the pursuit of it—in whiob most of tbe pleas ure truly oonslsts—and tbe young mar ried people must set out with as large and expensive an establishment as becoming those who have been wedded for twenty years. This is very unbapjy it fills the oommunity with bacbeore, who are waiting to make their fortunes, endangering virtue, promoting vice it destroys tbe true economy and design of tbe domestic institution, and it promotes inefficiency among females, who are expeoting to be taken up by fortune and passively sustained without any care or oonoern on their part and thus many a wife becomes, as a gentleman onoe remarked, not a "helpmate," but a "helpeat."
WOMEN WHO TIPPLE.
DRINKING HABITS OF8OMEOF THE WOMBN OK NEW YCRK
I would not go so far as to say that New York ladles drink to exoess, sup posing tbat publio drinking Is permis slble in a lady at all. Bnt I do say and see that ladies here are drinking a great deal of both wine and spirits. Young ladies—not fast glcla—when ont shopilng go into Bigot's or Paroell's, or
Mmonico's, and order a "hot Sootch" with as little hesitation as a Grand Rapids lady would order a pound of tea. I have noticed the habit for several years, and bavo written about it in New York and Boston papers. I have read what others have said concerning tbe matter, and I believe observing men generally will agree that tho custom is growing. Yet every time the subject is raised in the papers there is a great hue and cry, and tne thing Is denied very persistently. Notwithstanding the rows a public mention of the evil has already caused, I aflirm, of my own knowledge, it is true. I don't know that I have often seen ladles intoxicated here, save at Llederkranzor Arion balls, but I have seen hundreds of them drink freely. I am not writing of drunkards now, but of women who drink wine or something stronger every day of their lives at home or abroad. That there are hundreds of women here, in good society, too, who are drunkards, there can be no denying. A lady whom I have known for ten yoars has died since I was here last summer, from tbe effects of hard drink. Sbe was a beautiful woman arfti as brilliant as she was bad. Nevertheless, society in tbe metropolis bas not ceased mourning for ber yet. I know whereof I affirm when I say tbat beer is tbe most popular beverage in New York to-day. A glance at the tables in Koster & Bial's, Thiers', or any of tbe public or private places here, will oonvince tlje most incredulous. You will see as many women as men enjoying the foaming cnp. At the hotels or in private bouses, unless wine is commonly used, you wlil find beer to be the ordinary drink. Yesterday afternoon I sat in the saloon of a tittle German hotel on Fourteenfh street, talking with an ao tor whom Grand Rapids knows, and to whom it delights to give big houses, when a very nice looking .middle aged lady, dressed in widow's weeds, entered the hotel, sat down at a table, and drank a glass of beer with evident reliab. I should not have noticed tbe circumstanoe^particularly if sbe bad been one of a party, but drinking ber beer in such a solitary way seemed a little out of tbs usual course.—New York Cor. Grand Rapids Mich. Democrat.
