CHAPTER XVI. BELLBNQER.
A dozen matches were struck, and one of the men lit the lamp that stood on the table. 'Down with the old curl' shouted Tyler.
A dozen hands seized the mill agent and pressed him down upon his knees, Tyler wrenching the revolver from his hand. 'Mercy!' gasped Gaylord. 'Let him up, bojs I'll ask him a few questions,'
Said
the leader of the strik
ers. The Taill agent was allowed to stand upon his feet.
One of the men assisted Mrs. Oavlord to a chair, she being utterly helpless from fright, her faco presenting a horrible, ghastly appearance, her whole frame shaking as though stricken with palsy. 'Ob, good men, don't murder us. You shall have everything you wapt, all the money in the bouse, if you only not murder us,' whined the terrified woman. 'Hold your jaw, old woman,' scarled Gaylord, growing bold and defiant once more, now that Sanmodiato danger seemed past. 'I will manage these villains they shan't have a red, and you, Jim Tyler'U swing for this outrage/ 'Stop that, Sime Gaylord!' thundered Tyler. 'We mean business from the word. Are you ready to settle with the boys and pay up?' 'Pay up! Deuce take you. I'll see you ail banged first!' 'Where's the rope, Sam?' ftJenks, the teaniBter. advanced with a half inch rope coiled over bis arm. 'Slip the noose over tbo old dog's head.' 'Stop! This joke's gone far enough!' cried Gaylord, his heavy face blanching once more. 'There's no joke about it,' said Tyler, Bternly. 'We mean business, as I told you at the start. Pay the boys what you owe them, or you shall swing from oneofthoso trees in the yard, food for crows, in less than a York minute.' 'But—but this—' 'Give the rope, boys.'
Jeuks advanced, and with a dexterous movement threw the rope over tbo head of the mill agent. 'Now bear a hand, and we'll soon swing him up.' 'Mercy!'gasped Gaylord^ ... iWIUi you Wvjof* —r' 'I—yea—that Is, I would, but—' •Out with him, boys!' 'Iu the name of meroy! don't murder rue. I cau't pay you. I haven't the money gasped Gaylord, now completely cowed. •That excuse is too thin. Out with him—he's worth more dead than alive!' thundered Tyler, mercilessly. •Meroy! good men. Snare my husband!' pleaded the mill agent's wife, falling on her knees.
The bloodthirsty strikers j.had grabbed the rope and were moving away. •Stop! What means this outrage?'
Had a thunderbolt burst iu the room the occcpants oould not have been more startled.
The words were uttered in a lond, stern voice, full of oommanding firmness.
Instantly the rope fell from a dozen nerveless hands. A suddeu bush filled the room.
Gaylord stared in opeu eyed wonder: then a glad light burst over his brutal face. •Thank Heaven we are saved!' exolaimed Mrs. Gaylord, clasping her hands and rolling her eyes toward the ceiling.
A tall, gray haired man, riohly dressed aud smoothly shaved stood in the doorway. •Nathan Bellenger!' exclaimed Tyler. •What is the meaning of this outrage? Why do I find the stable ia ruins and my ageut in the hands of a murderous mob? James Tyler, can you answer me?'
As he spoke, the old man advanced into the room, and stood facing Tyler and tho mill agent, a stern, angry look on bis noble facte.
Both Tyler And Qaylord attempted te explain. •Stop,' said Belleuger. 'Let this room be cleared at once.'
Turning to the silent mill men •Leave the room and premises, every man of yon. I will settle with you tomorrow for this high banded proceeding. James Tyler, you may remain for the present.* with low mutterlngs tho now hum bled strikers slunk from the room. •Who'd a thought it?' muttered one of the men when they were safely outside. •Gad von,' muttered 8am Jenks, 'but old Bellinger looked savage, didn't he, boys? Weil all git our walkin' papers to-morrer, see ef we don't.'
The moment the room was cleared, Si men Gaylord slipped the rope from his neck and sprang forward to grasp the hand of his superior. •Take a seat, Mr. Gaylord I've no time for sentiment just now,' said the stera voice of the senior partner In the firm of Bellenger Lord, not taking the proffered hand.
The agent's wife, however, was not to be put down thus easily. Sherushei upon Bellenger, grasped his ban 1, and showered kisses upon it. •God blees lyou, Mr. Bellenger!' she cried. 'We\t hare been murdered but for you. These awful men—* 'Stop!' commanded the mill owner. 'You wont feel like thanking me when I get through. Be seated. I've a few word* with your husband before I speak to the men who have laid them* selvee open to censure and punishment for the unlawful proceedings of this night.*
The mill agent and his wife sank Into chairs, Gaylord's jaw dropping as as inkling or the troth dan tooted brain.
on his be-
Tyler leaned against the wall and stroked his beard with the utmost sang bold. •Simon Gaylord,' aald Nathan Bellenger, taking a torn about the room, Anal*
ly baiting in front of his agent, 'your little game of deceit and robbery has run its course. I am here now to see you safely lodged in jail.' •What this you're saying?' cried Gay lord with a stare ef surprise.
4I—I
don't
understand.' 'You will in a moment then,' thun dered Bellenger. 'You have been sys tematically robbing me for the past year, and your bookkeeper, Craven Brawler, baa been your tool to assist yon in the villiany. Four days sgo I received a line from the trusty spy whom I sent to watch you. He has kept an exact tally of the lumber sawed ana comparing the same with yonr books, finds that the difference is over a hundred thousand feet in two weeks. I have long suspected something wrong, and that was my resson for sending my son to watch your movements.' •Your son?' with a gasp. 'Yes, my son, Walter. He has been in your employ for the past few weeks.
An ashy pallor crept Into Gaylord'i face. 'This Is a good joke, Mr. Bellenger, but—' 'It's no joke, you villain. I have the proof of your villainy, as you shall find to your cost.' 'But your son hasn't been here, can explain—' 'There's no explanation needed from you,' returned Bellenger. 'As Joe Cross, my son, has acted his part well.' 'Joe Cross!'
The mill agent's jaw dropped, and he sat stupefied with fear and amazement.
CHAPTER XVII. TOTE LAST SCENE.
At this moment two persons entered the parlor from the hall, where they had been since the entrance of Bellen
ger* Joe Cross and Dr. Wells. When Gaylord saw these two enter, his courage altogether deserted him, and he bowed his hot face between his hands. 'Simon Gaylord, look up I have an accusation to make.'
It was the voice of Dr. Wells. The mill agent roused himself with an effort, and glared fiercely into the handsome face of the young doctor
You're a sneaking impostor' sneered Gaylord, hotly. We shall see, old man. I have been on your track for the. past month, in tending to bring you to justice for the murder of your first wife!'
A husk like that of death followed this announcement. The cool Tyler looked interested.
Even Bellenger and his son Beemed surprised. Mrs. Gaylord trembled, and hid her face on her husband's shoulder.
I fling your accusation in your teeth!' biased Gaylord. 'It's abase lie!' Your first wife was Mrs. Rivers, Ola's mother,' continued the doctor, in low, even tones. 'Sybil Brawler was governess in your family four years ago She conceived the idea of removing our wife and removing you herself, he confided her plans to you, and yon fell in with them. To remove your wife without exciting suspicion waB necessary to the success of your plans. •Doctor Lemuel Wells was a practitioner of long standing, yet a man without principle, whose only god was gold, to obtain which he would sell his soul. •To this man you went. For a sum of money he agreed to assist you. He proposed a poisonous drug, so subtle in its workings as to bid defiance to detection. Your wife wag taken siok, not dangerous.? so, but she gradually grew worse, and faded slowly out of this life into the life beyond tho grave. No one then suspected that Simon Gaylord, Sybil Brawler and Dr. Wells were her murderers yet such was the fact. 'Six rhonths after your wife died you married Sybil Brawler, sold your wife's property and left the country. In time, you came into the employ of Bellenger A Lord, whom yon have robbed almost from|the day of your connection with them. 'Less than a week ago yon administered a poisonous drug to Ola Rivers, doubtless intending to murder her, or force her an unwilling bride into the arms of your villainous relative, Craven Brawler. I have been an Instrument, assisted by others, in the hands of God, of frustrating your last deep laid plot. 'In half an hour a constable will be here and place you and your partner under arrest."
The young doctor paused. All eyes were turned upon Gaylord. He struggled to his feet, his huge form trembling, ms ^puffy, bloated face ashen In Its pallor. •Your story is false!' cried Gaylord. 'Yon are a base impostor, and know nothing of the past. My former wife died a natural death. You have oonoected this story to rain me.' 'Havel?'with a sneer. 'Yes. You have attempted to personate Dr. Weils. Yon are an Impostor. If the true Dr. Wells was here, he would fling this vile lie In your teeth as I do now.' 'Ah but Dr. Wells of the long age is dead,' sneered the young man. 'He died in the far off state of California.' •How know you this?' growled Gaylord. '1 will explain. Mrs. Rivera had a scapegrace boy, an only son, who went to California when very young, to seek his fortune. You never saw the boy to know him, Simon Gaylord. In the Golden State Robert Rivers prospered. After laying up a fair share or property, he entered tbe office of a physician ana studied medicine. In time he became a practitioner of some celebrity. News came at length of his mother's marriage to Simon Gaylord. She had married well, so a friend wrote the youBg doctor, and Robert was satisfied. 'Two years later came the news of his mother's deaih. 'His longings for home ceased now. His mother was dead, and he

his home in the east, for a time, am the busy cares of his profession. 'One evening, not many months ago, Dr. Rivers was summoned to the bedside of another physician, one Dr. Wells, a man of considerable note. Rivera found the man In a dying condition, a prey tojtbe most Intense menta 1 agony. could not
•Dr. Wells knew that he lire, and he had a confession to make. Dr. Rivera summoned the nearest magistrate and two witnesses, who listened to the dying confession of the man, a ooDfeaslon which was carefully written down, and which 1 now have in my keeping a confession that reveals tbe ftiets regarding your first wile's death, Simon Gaylord.'
Tbe mill agent reeled back into his seat with a stifled groan. Mrs. Gaylord fell forward, striking her face on the carpet, a stream af Mood triekling from her parted lips.
Mis. Gaylord never recovered from the effects of that revelation. She »nk rapidly,'and a week later died.
The villalsoos Gaylord was thrown lito prison to await trial for ths murder of his flint wife, and the attempt on ths life of his step-daughter.
On the morning following that terrible night, so tragic in events, ths bodies of
.j4
Craven Brawler and Jake Louis received burial. Joella was never arrested for slaying these two villains.
The story, backed by the confession of Dr. Wolls. that Robert Rivers related, was sufficient to clear the skirts of tbe brave loreet girl, who had saved the law from judicially strangling two of the greatest' villains on the border.
Ola was ill many weeks, but under the tender nursing of her new found brother, she finally regained health.
When brought to trial, Simon Gaylord, who was utterly broken in body and spirit, made fall confession, in open court, and was sentenced to the State's prison for life.
The mill property was placed in chai of Walter Bellenger, the Joe Cross of our story, who, with the assistance of James Tyler, brought order out of chaos, Mr. Bellenger did not prosecute Joella's father for his part in tbe strike, believing it best to let the matter drop.
Tyler showed his appreciation of bis employer's clemency by closer attention to business, and in rime he was given a foreman's berth in the mill.
Walter Bellenger had not forgotten the poor kitchen girl. He became a constant visitor at Tyler's where Ola now lived, and in time won her consent to be his wife.
Robert and Walter grew to be firm friendB, however much they bad distrusted each other in the past, and Dr. Rivera and Joella occupied a prominent position at the wedding.
One year after tbe events narrated in this history, Dr. Rivers and Joella stood under the branches of the giant oak that grew near her father's house.
Tbe doctor held one small brown hand clasped in bis, gazing down tenderly into the brown eyes of the forest girl.
A year's acquaintance with the conrtly Robert Rivers had toned down Joella's wlldness a trifle. •Joella, I am not satisfied, and can not be, until I have you all to myself, as my wife,' said the doctor, earnestly.
She smiled saucily up into his face. 'You are sure you love me, Robert?' 'Of course I am, darling.' 'But I'll give you a deal of trouble I can't curb my" temper a bit, and you know •Hush. I'll risk all that. There's no woman In the world like you, Joeira. I have loved yeu ever since we first met,' cried Dr. Rivers, pressing a kiss upon her full red lips. 'Very good. I'll marry you, Doctor, and make you miserable for life,' returned Joella, laughing saucily. 'Such misery will be delightful.'
He folded her to bis breast, and kissed her again. But Joella was a false propbejfc. In after years Dr. Rivers never found cause to regret bis choice, for Joella possssade a warm, loving heart after all, andmsed an exemplary wife and mother [THIS END.]

People tormented by the many disagreeable sensations produced by dyspepsia, or who are thin, nervous and weafc, should use the standard tonic—Greenwood's Quinine Wine. They will find it agreeable and beneficial. It enriches the blood by aiding digestion and assimilation: soothes and invigorates the nervoos system, and imparts a healthful appetite. When used as a remedy for bilious and intermittent fever, it produces the happiest results, if taken between the attacks. Convalescence is hastened and untimely decay of the physique and constitution is arrested by it. The spirituous constituent, sherry wine, is of the best quality, and the aromatics combined with it render its flavor additionally pleasant. They who use it gain flesh as well as strength, and it exerts a cheering influence upon the mind. It promotes a healthy secretion and flow of bile, sound repose and regularity in the action of the
