KEEPING THE TEETH CLEAN. Mr. 6. A. Mills gives In Dental Cos* BUM some sensible advice about clean* ing the teeth. While there is, be says, a Sene.-al use of toothbrushes by the people, there is, also, not uncommonly an abase of tbem for want of proper instruction. It is getting to be better understood by both dentists and patients now than formerly that a croeswise brushing is not wise, bat that the upper teeth should be brushed downward, and the lower teeth upward. It is a common mistake not to brush thoroughly the cheek and posterior surfaces of the third molars and she lingual surfaces of i. "lamsure,"says Mr. Mills, "that nothing libe an ade-

qaate amount of care is given to this service. It cannot be too strongly impressed on the minds of the guardians of children that the practice of brush' ing the teeth thoroughly should be be gun as early as possible. Straight brushes are utterly impracticable on the surfaces to which I have referred as the ones most neglected. Carved brashes with a tuft end, bud shaped or convex are the best. There are several efficient forms."

The faithful use of floss silk between the teeth ought to be earnestly recommended also the use of the qaill toothpick. The wood toothpicks so generally furnished at pablic eating places are a source of much evil to the soft tissues between the teeth. All kinds of metallic toothpicks are objectionable, though it is the practice of some dentists to commend them to their patiente. The value of a decided polished surface of the tooth b&comes very apparent to those who have had the opeiation perfoimed the facility with which such teetb can be kept clean is evident and although this condition may have beeu secured at considerable expense, yet it is an investment that will pay a good rate of intereet. Few dentists nave much idea of the beautiful polish that a human tootb will take. Many teeth are capable of a great improvement in this direction, which are now a decided detriment to what might otherwise be a pleasing face. The general idea among the people is that interfering with the surface of the teeth destroys the enamel, but this a popular error.

UNITY OF HOME.

Writing upon the "Unity of the Home," Mrs. Julia McNair says: "The child who is taken into honest confidence is not the blatant gossip to publish home affairs, but is the staunch home co-worker." As she says children are "the very centre of the home" and should be allowed to understand and take an interest in family affairs. Parents exouse themselves from taking their children as interested partners in home matters on the plea that they will betray oonfidenoe accidentally. Pleading this,-they deprive their children of training in trustworthiness, and drive them to fervid friendships with strangers by refusing the children their own confidence. Another plea ia that these affairs do not concern the child. This we cannot see: the child must be concerned by all that affects the prosperity of the familv. Suppose the parents explain frankly to their sons and daughters business entanglements which distress them at once their sympathies are enlisted in retrenchment they submit cheerfully to privations at which they might grumble if they did not understand the necessity the sens earlier see the value of developing their energies and improving their opportunities that they may be their fathers efficient helpers.''

BRIGHT HOMES.

A single bitter word may disquiet a whole family for a wholo day. One aucty gWktino easts a Unnm over the household, while a some, me rfrrffffll of sunshine, may light up the darkest and weariest hours. humble the abode,if it be garnished with graoeand sweetened with kindness and smiles, the heart will turn lovingly toward it from all the tumult of the world it will be the deafest spot beneath the circuit of the san.

And the inflaences of home perpetuate themselves. The gentle grace of the mother lives in the daughter long after her head is pillowed in the dust of death and the fatherly kindness finds its echo in the nobility and oourtesy of sons, who come to wear his mantle and fill his place while on the other hand, from an unhappy, misgoverned and disordered home, go forth persons who shall make other homes miserable, and perpetuate the sourness atfd sadness, the contentions and strifes and railings which have made their own early lives too wretchod and distorted.

CATARRH.

If we were to judge by the number of physicians who make a specialty of catarrh, we would at onoe conclude that it was a terrible epidemic, and it is, no doubt frightfully prevalent. The beat way to deal with the disease ia not to have it to keep olean, to eat wholesome and well cooked food, to live in clean aud well veutilated houses, to dress warmly with flannel next to the skin, and above all to keep the feet and extremities dry and warm. Children sitting for hours with damp ahoes on, are almost certain to contra catarrhs. The evaporation of the moisture produces a constant chilliness which is dangerous, even to those in robust health, and doubly so to the delicate. Add to this the fact that children's feet and legs are ordinarily not more than half clothed, and it is no wonder that doctor's hod plenty of catarrhal patients.

One Way To Ecooomltr, Many a poor man, if required to*account for tt»e manner in which be has expended his income, would find bills of his family physician for
