In mesh a noisy plane my life,** thought Unohs
David, as be made bis way through the crowd. "And how the Xew Yorker* do stare."
For, in truth and in faot, Uncle DA* rtd Doty presented a sufficiently trong contrast to those around bim to induce people to tarn their bead* and took a second time.
Six feet high, with a complexion rosy aa a fall pear, along white beard reaching nearly to bis waist, and a shaggy far overcoat, he strode along with the basket ta one haad and tie bag in the other, inquiring his way with a persist* ence which would have done credit to a second Christopher Columbus in search of a new Western continent. And it waa just noon when Uncle David Xound himself in East Barron street. •'My man," said be to a policeman who was trying to keep blinselr warm by slapping bis arms across his chest, "which is No.*99?" "Ninety-nine?" said the policeman "Half way down the block—tbat big houso with the blinds all closed." ••Can't ba,T* said Uncle Bovld. "Bat it is," retorted the policeman. "Look bore, my man," argued the old gentleman. "I'm looking for my niece, married to a store clerk—'Mrs. Elgin by name* Now is it likely .they'd be livin in a palace like that?" "I dont know anything about tbat," responded the polioeman. "Bat it's No. 99.
And he went on slapping himself more vindictively thsnever. Uncle David stood ctarlng at the tall bouse few moments more, and then, he boldly attended tne steps and rang the bell.
It can't do no harm to inquire, anyhow," said be to himself. A maid ins fluted muslin cap, trim-1 med witb myrtle green ribbon*, and a flounced merino dress, answered the tinkle of the bell. "Does Mrs. Evelyn Klgin live here?" *0uess you've mistook tbe door, mistor," said tbe damsel superciliously, glancins at the basket and bag. "Does Mrs. Evelyn Elgin live here?" repeated Mr. Itoty. ••Yos, she live here, but she's receiving."
Doing what?"said Unole David. Ain't it New Yoar's day?" said the
ing past tbe girl'ahead at a vista of gselighted ball, paneled in pink and geld, and decorated with stands of flowers.
J-*?1
remonstrated tba-glrl. 'Very well—I'm a gentleman friend of hers."
And then he pushed unceremoniously aast. "Your card, sir, If you please," said the maid, holding out her nand in some consternation.
I haven't any eard," saldTJncle Ba•vkJ. And be walked, basket, bag, shaggy greatcoat and all, into an elegant salt of parlors, where tbe velvet csrpets. mirrored walls, .gilded furniture and great glitering chandeliers, all seemed to glisten and sparkle together. In a bay wlmtow at tbo end a refreshment table was set o.ut, With a goodly show of •out .glass decanters, .silver ooffee «srn and a piled uptropioal fruit, while near by, chatting gaily to a group of gentlemen, stood a lady in a trailing pick dress, with flowers in her hair and Jewels sparkling at her feet! "Tbon," said Mr. Septimus Elgin, slapping one hand vehemently upon bis knee, "we're ruined!"
It was scarcely a month afterward that Uucie -David and Aunt Pandora were sitting bv their biasing fire of pine logs, with its .resinous "drip, drip," bubbling down into the ashes below, when there was a low click to tbe latch and a slight veiled fiaure came hurrying ia. "Why!" cried Uncle David, rising to bis feat in breathless amassment, 'Jit ain't our Evelyn!"
She threw herself, robbing, irto Aunt Fandora'f kindly arms. "Oh, take me baak, take mc back," she sobbed, "for I have no othar homo left.''
