Thb concert Wednesday eveningjwas not for the benefit of Miss Jeff era as has been generally supposed, but in the Interest of the Cincinnati College of Music. John Franks,
a brakeman, on
the
Yandalia road, was killed, near Seoleyvllle, Monday afternoon. He was setting the brakes on a freight train, and in stepping from one car to another, fell between the cars, the wheels passing over the body and causing immediate death. The body was taken to Brazil, his home. Young Franks was twenty years of sge, and warmly esteemed by bis associates. 1
An accident that came near being fatal occurred at Sheriff Hay's residence, on Monday afternoon. Amelia Specht, twelve years old, a sister of the Sheriffs wife, was pitying in front of the grate, when her olothes caught fire. The girl ran screaming down stairs to the kltoben. The servant girl threw a large bowl of water over her, and with Mrs. Hay's assistance succeeded in removing the burning clothes, but not before the ohlld was badly burned on the hack, arms, and lower limbs. Mrs. Hay's bands were also severely burned.

THB merchants tell us that never before have they had so good a trade the week bsfore Christmas as this season. And we doubt If over before our merchants have had such a tempting variety of holiday goods. The dry goods, notion, jewelry, book and other stores have their shelvee laden with the richest and rarest goods, wbile tbe devices whioh have been gotten up to please tbe youthful mind are numberless and progressive. In tbe selection of tbe latter it is a question if parents do not exper lence ss much pleasure in purchasing and preparing for Christmas as tbe children do in tbe possession of the presents on tbe eventful day itself. See tbe glistening eyes of tbe mother aa she wanders among tbe beautiful objects, bewildered but delighted, and cheerfully guaging her gifts by her pocketbook— and the woman with a dollar In her band to buy toys is as happy, to all appearances, as her neighbor with a hundred. It is a gracious thing that children are so constituted as to be pleased with cheap as well aa costly gewgaws. They care more for quantity than quality, and however trifling tbe character of their Christmas gifts, are delighted and satisfied. There was a time In our own experience, and it is uow, no doubt, the experience of others, when a very little oon/ectionery, a doughnut, or an apple, constituted tbe bulk, and sometimes tbe whole, of tbe Christmas offerings. But we do not doubt that the joy over these simple gift* wss ss great as that experienced by tbosp for whose pleasure and amusement now the cunning of experts is taxed. The pleasure comes not altogether from the value of the gift, but in the kindly remembrance. Therefore, parents, see to it that every ohlld Is In some wsy made happy on this festive occasion.
In lookiDg around town one of tbe principal evidences of the coming of merry Christmss is tbe very artistically trimmed window at Owen, Pixloy fc Co's clothing store. It is set with two evergreens tastefully hung with fancy goods. Underneath is a ground work, representing snow, through which you can see bits of fallen branches and twigs peeping. Over the evergreens is sprinkled white powder and diamond dust tbe whole representing a moat perfect snow scene. Crowds gather and shiver ss they look st it, while really tbe atmosphere is comparatively warm. We learn that Mr. Hite is the designer and executer of this work and congratulate him on bis success.
4
Later—Tbe manager fearing fire on account of tbe quantity of cotton used has thought best to take this portion of tbe trimming out, which rather detracts from Its appearance.
