A FA.MIL SOLID A Y. Nobody who Uvea and more* and lias bis being to any extent out of doors needs to be reminded that Christmas is coming. Tbe omens are' in tbe air, in the streets and in the store windows. People are busy contriving little surprises for eaoh other and for the children. "Shopping" of tbe bolidsy sort is the chief occupation of tbe ladies, and even the men submit to its exasperations with anwonted good nature. Far' oels are mysteriously smuggled home and conveyed into secret places, to await tbe revelation of delight. So far as premonitions go Christmas would seem to be tbe time specially set spart for giving and receiving presents. This has indeed come to be tbe great distinguishing characteristic of tbe day among our people. Donbtleas tbe religious signifies tion of tbe day is not forgotten, and when tbe day arrives all persons of a devout or serious turn of mind will give it some theught, and will be tbe better for doing so.

But after all tbe day has come to be peculiarly one of social onjoyment, aud tbe exchange of those fine courtesies wbicb bind us together in the closest of all relations—those of family and of friendship. In former years Tbe Mail has given considerable sp&co to Christmas lore, and has made a specialty of a Christmas edition, and on this occasion we will not rehearse the familiar traditions on the old time observances of tbe day, lest they become tiresome by repetition. Everybody knows them. Christmas as it is now is the holiday of tbe family, more so among all classes and conditions of people than the holiday of last month. Next to religion, the family is the most sacred institution among men, and tends most to foster tboso qualities that purify and elevate, raising us above tbe drudgery and selfishness of tbe work-day world. A holiday that is kept by tbe family, and in the family, cannot (ail to have most beneficial effects. It is nofr merelyia time for temporary rest from the turmoil and distraction of business, but for the fostering of tbe purest affeotion and tbe most precious sort of goodwill among men, that wbiob prevails in the home, and from there carries its influence into all tbe walks of life.

The more Christmas is made a home holiday tbe better for the home and for society at large. It should be In tbe highest and bestsonse a good time for parents and children. To a rational exteut it may be a feast day, and be all the better for diffusing the cbeer that ounes from creature comforts, but its pastimes, its exchange of tokens of good will, Its biiarlty and mirth in tbe home circle, have a tendency to strengthen and purity tbe ties that more than any other bold us to duty and responsibility in life. Nor is the festive character of our observance of the time at all inconsistent with its sacred origin and religious significance. Tbe first Christmas morn WHS hailed with joy even by tbe heavenly hosts as a harbinger ofpeaoe and good will, and mankind from that day has made it an occasion for rejoiclog.

It is too spt to be tbe case that a holiday becomes merely a day of idleness and the vicious indulgence toward which Idleness always tends. If Christmas be kept eomparatively free from tbis abuse, It Is by making It a day of home celebration, in whioh tbe families are devoted to enjoyment which takes in all members at once. A day devoted to tbe highest and keenest of domestic pleasure-* will do society more goed than a month of Sundays. S

THB anniversary of the landing of tbe Pilgrims on Plymouth Rock occurs on Monday. It used to be observed by a society in this city, but for several pftQt the society has bad no meeting, ft has oom« Vo be too much the A&hioB to H** UpOb ibt innUtt and forbidding side ©f the Puritan character. It is true tbat their stern teal made them intolerant, and, in a measure, uncharitable, and that tbis quality kas not been wholly eliminated from the race that followed thet»« but this is a trivial matter compared with the sturdy virtues for which the New Knglanders—of whom we have so many in this community—are eo noted. The rigid sense oJ duty, the fidelity to conscience, the stern uprightness of purpose and inflexible adherence to avowed principle*, which characterised those hardy pioneers, are something we do not wish to see go out of fashion.

A word about presents. Let them be gifts from heart to heart, coming spon tatteoualy and without grudging. We believe In the custom of making preotatsat Christmas Ume, and rejoice to Me it constantly growing. We pity tbe manor woman who bss *ot some one to give a gUt to. It is ttxftrowa fault if they ha** none. There are needy ones ail around them whose live* they could bright*** by .a timely present. The stores ate j«m fall of beautiful things, with price* to suit all. list everyone's poekstbook fly open and do what It en to tasks the Cferistmss boHday a merry and happy one,

WHAT a wicked world we do live in All the female candidates for members of the School Oommitteeln Boston were elected not to serve, last week, and they do say that their defeat was owing to tbe sharp trick by means of which the women secured the nomination of their candidates. So young—in poll tics, and y^jfc so wicked. Where is the purity in politics wbieh we have so confidently predicted was to oome' in with woman suffrage? Possibly with more experience they will learn, as men bays, that it does not pay to resort to tricks in which they can be caught Evidently they most either learn to be lees tricky, or more sly.

THE social pendulum has begunto swing tbe other way. We refer to the indications that young ladies are taking more interest in tbe practical affairs of life than formerly. 1 Cooking schools are becoming fashionable and are attended by the daughters of wealthy parents. It looks aa if tbe era of unspinning't lilies were.abont to end and that we are to have a generation of women again inatead of wax dolls. May the siens of such a change multiply.

IT is reported that a number of Oen, Grant's personal friends will hold consultation in Philadelphia during his stay there, to consider the subject of bis candidacy for president. Some of his friends are oppoaed to bis candidacy for a third term and believe that tbe time has come when he ought to make positive announcement as to his intentions. An authoritative statement on the subject is expected within a few days.

IF women voted "out west" here, no paper would ever think of making an item of tbe fact tbat they were not booted or in any way insulted at tbe polls, and yet the Boston press seems to think such a fact in tbe Hub worthy of mention. Are we|wbo live among the wolves and are half civilized—accord log to Boston notions—more respectful to the female sex than tbe intelligent, educated, refined, etc., eta

A COUPLE of weeks since tbe Peoria Saturday Evening Cal) charged The Mail and some other papers, with publishing a poem from that paper, and besides omitting proper credit, leaving off tbe author's name. Tbe Mail should not have been Included, in the list, and a proper correction was made by the Call last week. Tbe poem appeared in tbis paper as it was found in one of our exchanges.

CHIOAGO has been selected as the place, and the 3rd of June tbe time, for nominating tbe candidates for President and Vice President. Indianapolis wanted tbe convention, but the city is uot large enough to contain sucb an assemblage. It would be too much like trying to squeeza a barrel into a beer f. Chicago is the place for it.

THRRE are reasons why tbis Christmas of 1879 should be a particularly bappy one. Tbe day of prosperity for which we waited so long has oome again. There is work for all and wages for all. There is more money in the poor man's pocket than thero was a year ago. I?, this land of plenty there are none now who need want.

THE Boston papers are bragging'because, when tbe women went to vote, warning having been given of their approach, the smokers all hid their pipea and cigars. Wonder if they hid tbe tobacco stink also. Tbe papers do not inform us. 3?

SENATOR VOOBHKES wants to know, you know, why the colored people are oomlng from North Carolina to Indiana, and has introduced in Congress a resotlon providing for an investigation of tbe causes leading to tbe exodus.

CHRISTMAS comes but once a year. Advertisers are not to be denied our columns at tbis season, and they encroach upon our reading apace. After the holidavaThe Mail will be a more readable 1*1^.

JUDGE SAMUSL E. PERKINS, chief justice of the Supreme Court of Indiana, died Wednesday night at Indianapolis, aged sixty-eight yrars.

GRN. GRANT was received In Philadelphia, on Tuesday, and tbe remarkable journey around the world wai completed.
