Vrydagb, the
architect, for plans furnished for a court house in 1872, has been looked upon as a sort of joke by the average citizen. But on Saturday last the stuffing was knocked out of the joke by a Putnam oounty jury awarding him a verdict of 97,000, which with Interest amounts to 910,425. The case was taken to Greenoastle on chsnge of venue and has been In the courts sinoe 1873. The case, which will be appealed to the Supreme Court, revives reoollectlons of the court house ring, the committee of fifteen, and other events of that exciting period.
A NRW kind of "charity danoe" baa been ictroduoed in Indianapolis, that is deserving of imitation in this city. We know there are many excellent ladles here who will thank us tor the suggestion. The Herald says "the handsomest and most popular gentlemen at every party each dance a certain number of dances with the plain ladles, the bashful ladles, the poor dancer*, and all who would otherwise adorn the wall. They «all these "charity dances," and they are the true charity of polite society, helping to enjoyment those who would be joyless if the old method of each gentleman dancing as often as he could with whoever he admires roost were pursued. Let the "charity dances" continue. There Is no surer wsy for a gentleman to popularise himself than by paying some attention to the ladies who are overlooked by the selfish majority.*'

& FOR LIFE!
TRIAL OF WILLIAM TAYLOR.
NARROWLY ESCAPES THE HALTER.
William Taylor was put on trial in the Criminal Court on Monday for the murder of James Csmper, on the even Ing of the 30th of August last. The testimony did not differ msterially from the facts already published in this psper snd are so fresh in the minds of our rerders that a repetition la not necessary. Prosecutor Kelly alone represented the state, and he was sbly defended by N. G. Buff snd F. C. Danaldson. In ssving him from the halter the later can claim a victory.
The jury was out two hours, and at one time seven of the jurymen were in fsvor of inflicting the death penalty. Then a change occurred and all but one favored a life sentenoe. He finally gave way, and the verdict was rendered of guilty of murder in the first degree snd that the punishment be imprisonment in the penitentiary during life.
A terrible temperance lesson 1b tsught in the close of this tragedy. Had Taylor gone home sober from this city on thst fatal evening, James Camper would not have been sent so hurriedly into eternity, snd two families would not now be bereft of husband and father.
THERE was no lack of amusement and entertainment last night—the "Unknown" was played at the Opera House, the Fifth street Vsriety show wss in fall blast the temperance meeting was at Dowling Hall, Rev. Henderson lectured at the Baptist church, the Home Circle danced at the Terre Haute House, and the Universal Brotherhood tripped at their hall on Main street at the Christian church there was a concert and readings, and the Unlversalists enjoyed supper aad social at thdir church.
POLICEMEN of this and other cities are altogether too ready to pull the deadly pistol. The other night a ball was sent after a man who was fleeing from eur police, and the paper says "but the distance wss too great and the man escaped His only offence was having been found disorderly in a house of bad character. Had the ball hit the mark and done fatal work, wouldn't it have been murder in the first degree?
THIS cold snsp suggests that those having water pipes in their house should have one of W. A. Crawford's Antifreezing attachments, which Mr. Louis Dreuslcke is putting in. He attaches the apparatus in the most thorough manner, making it work like clook work. It is a sure protection against frozen pipes, and should be in general use. His shop is on Ohio street, near Fifth. Call on him and he will explain its working,
—There have been a number of inquiries made by persons who desire to gain a knowledge of the first principles of musio. Such knowledge can beobtalned without too much expense.
