THERE are only fifty-eight paupers at the poor asylum at the present time. Of this number, thirty-eight are m#b, and twenty are women. Eighteen are insane. ~—8.

THE trustees of the several townships of this county are doing some commend able work in the betterment of roads and bridges. Now is the time for such work.

THE 17th of December has been set tor the grsnd complimentary concert for Miss Hellen Jeffers, when she will be assisted by several artistes from the Cincinnati College of Music.

THE wife of Ed. P. Fairbanks, agent of the I. & St. h. R. R., died at half-past two o'clock on Monday morning. She has been an invalid for a long time. The body was taken to Green castle for interment.

Anew city directory is to be issued about the first of January, by C. O.Ebel A Co., who have their canvassers now at work. Our people may expect as correcta book as it is possible to make a work of this kind.

THE number of pupils at the Normal school, next spring, it is confidently expected, will reack five hundred. President Brown has recently made a two weeks' trip through the State in the interest of the school.

THE congregation of St. Benedict's German Catholic church held a fair, at Bowling Hall, Monday and Tuesday evenings, and netted some four hundred dollars. Our catholic friends can get more money out of a fair than any other denomination.

THE advertisement of the Buckeye store reappears in our columns, after a long absence. The oooaaion for this return is to let tbe lady readers of The Mail know of the bargains there offered on goods damaged by the recent fire. This slight damage is principally from

smoke, and does not injury the goods in the least. MKMLYA WATSO.V, of the National House, have purchased tbe .£tna House, at Danville, Ills. It is the leading hotel up there, furnished through* out in first clam style. Messrs Heinly and Watson will take turns in conducting the jfitna House, both retaining their interest in the National here. They are experienced hotel men, and will give our Danville neighbors a hotel that they may be proud of. Mr. Heinly is now in Danville putting things in order.

OOR coal dealers have been missing coal from their sheds and cars for some time. Monday night John Kennedy .concluded to watch the cars standing near the corner ot Tenth and Poplar streets, and Andrew J. Spear, tbe driver of a coal wagon, was caught. About one o'clock he drove up and filled his wagon, and as he waa about to drive away was nabbed. He had an examination before

Esq. Qnigley, and in default of bail was sent to jail to await the action of the grand jury. Spear has a family on Thir teenth street, and claims that be was drunk when caught*

0JBOROK M. ROTIXORH is sixty years of age, and certainly old enough to cease triting with a woman's affections. Mrs. Martha E. Strough Is a blooming widow of thirty and knows bow to take care of herself. One day the early part of this month George said he would marry Martha in December. He changed his mind the other day and concluded to take a trip to Germany, and so informed his Intended bride. Forthwith she filed her complaint in the Circuit Oourt for breach of promise, claiming 16,000 tor the damage done her heart. This proceeding brought tiie gay deceiver to time and on Tuesday he caused the toll to be dismissed by marrying the plaintiff. It is te be hoped that "all's weU that end well."

THE State Normal News is the title of a neatly printed four page monthly psper, the first number of which was Issued last week. S. S. Parr and C. W Hodgin are tbe pubiiahers, and as its title indicates it will be devoted to tbe Interests of tbe Normal School and its pupils—past and present.

GRACE, a three year old daughter of Max Wood, was badly burned about the face, Tuesday morning. She was carryings lighted shaving when her clothes oaugiit fire. Mr. Wood, with great presence of mind and prompt action, saved ber from a horrible death and it is now thought her face will not be disfigured.

THERE ought to be an ordinance by which the police can clear the streets and sidewslks of curbstone merchants patent medicine men and others of the class, who are becoming a positive nuisance. They toil not, neither do they pay taxes, and yet there are mer chants who in all their glory have not sacb profits as they.

ONE of the Democratic family rows— that pertaining to the County Clerk's office—has been settled, by the appointment of John W. Davis, of the law firm of Allen, Mack A Davis, to take the place of E.S. Erney as Deputy Clerk On account of Clerk Durkan's ill health Mr. Davis will have charge of the office, The former bondsmen have been re leased, and anew bond filed, with John W. Davis, Frank McKeen, Dennis Bar rett and Wm. Mack as endorsers in the sum of 920,000.

AN effort is being made to secure a lecture on Astronomy, from Prof. Rich ard A. Proctor, of England. Prof. Proc tor is among the beet of living Astrono mere, and stands easily at the head as a popular expositor of the wonders of the hesvens. All lovers of astronomy and science should give cordial aid to the enterprise. The Professor is now deliv ering courses of lectures in tbe eastern cities, and during the winter is to de liver a course at Bloomington, in this State. Can we not secure a lecture from him in Terre Haute.

JOSEPH BILBY and Benjamin F. Per kins were arrested Wednesday Bight charged with tbe murder of A. C, Mat tox, on the night of the 2d of May, 1677. Bllby is a teamster, residing on north 13tb street, and Perkins is a laborer working for Jobn Ross, on First street, Tbe testimony against these men priudpslly that of the wife of Perkins whose character is such as to need other evidence when the case comes to trial Sbe hss twice before had ber huBbaud arrested, but weakened when she was called before the grand jury. She now charges Bilby with being the murderer and ker husband an accessory. Bilby claims tbst he was in Texas three onths before the homicide and remain ed there one year. Tbe sheriff was no doubt justified in making tho arrest, but there does notsppesrto be sufficient evidence on which to base a strong hope that the real murderers are i«t custody and will suffer for their terrible crime

Since tbe above was printed in The Mail's first edition, tbe arrested men have been discharged, the evi dence not being deemed sufficient to hold them.
