Castor oil will soften leather. To whiten ivorjfc-boil in lime water. Take mild aperient* for pimply irritation*.

Alkalai washes area valuable remedy for ivy poisoning. To clean zinc—rub on fresh lard with a cloth and wipe dry.

Corsets with the whalebones removed make good cleaning cloths. Paint should be varnished, because It is then more easily cleaned.

Dry friction daily with a towol stimulates the skin and circulation. Fresh fish shonld be fried in the grease obtained by frying sweet salt pork.

Onions and potatoes should be put in warm water an hour before cooking. Tepid water is produced by combin ing two-thirds cold and one-third boiling.

Rat holes may be stopped effectually by filling with broken glass and plaster of Paris.

A pint of mustard seed putin a barrel of cider will preserve it sweet for several months.

No person in health should drink more than from two to three pints of any liquid daily.

Hats, mlee and insects will avoid a place that has been sprinkled with chloride of lime.

A mixture of oil and ink is good to clean kid boots with the first softens and the latter blackens them.

Carelessness in changing the underclothing at night accounts for the coarse complexion of many girls.

Thoroughly wetting the hair once or twice a week with a weak solution of gait water will prevent it falling out.

Old boot tops, cut into nieces the right aiae and lined, make gooa iron holders. The leather keeps all heat away from the hand.

After a stove has onoe been thoroughly blacked, it can be kept looking well for a long time by rubbing it with a newspaper every morning.

To remove grease from wall paper, lay several folds of blotting- paper on the spot, and bold a hot iron near it until the grease is absorbed.

ON THE USE OF LEMONS.' The lemon tree is a native of .Ajtia, although it is cultivated in Italy, Portugal, and the south of France. In Europe, however, it seldom exceeds the dimensions of the smallest tree, whilst In its native states It grows to over 00 feet. Every part of this tree is valuable in medicine, though we rarely omploy any of it but its fruit, that 1b the lemon itself. And every one knows bow to employ this, as In lemonade, etd There are three ways of making lemonade: To squeeze the juice into cold water— this is the shortest way or to cut it in slices and let it soak in cold water or to cut it in slices and then boil it. Either way is good. Lemonade is one of the best and safest drinks for any person, whether in health or not. It is suitable to all stomseh diseases, is excellent in sickness—Lu caaee of jaundice,

gie

ravel, liver complaint, Inflammation of bowels, and fevers. It is a speciUc against worms and skin complaints. The pippins, crushed, may also be mixed with water and sugar, and used as a drink. Lemon juloo is the best anti-scorbutic remedy known. It not only cures this disease, br.t prevents it Sailors make a dally use or it for this purpose. I advise every one to rub their gums daily with lemon juice to keep them in health. The bands and nails are also kept clean, white soft and supple by the daily use of lemon instead of soap. It also prevents chilblains. Lemon is used it intermittent fevera, mixed with strong, hot black ooffee, without sugar. Neuralgia may be cored by rubbing the pari affected with a out lemon, ft Is valuable, also, to cure wsrts, and to destroy dandruff on the head by robbing the roots of the hair with it. In fact, its uses are manifold, and the more we employ it externally and internally, the better we shall And ourselves. Natural remedies are the best, and nature is our beet doctor, if we will only listen to it. Decidedly, rub your hands, head, and gums with lemon, and drink lemonade in preference to all other liquids.

VENTILATION.

•A simple device for ventilating bedrooms is within the reaoh of every one having an ordinary window in his room, by whioh fresh outer air ean be admitted in small quantity with such an npward current as will prevent its being felt as an injurious draft by the Inmates, partloolsrly adapted toi

A SLAVE TO DUTf#

Many wives saorifloe themselves to a mistaken sense of duty, and work so bsrd for their husbands and children that all the beauty is crushed out of their own livesjLA hardworking wife cannot retain fresnness and comeliness. In devoting herself exclusively to household matters she becomes careless in dress and in manners. Her husband sees the change, and very seldom dosBhe think there is safBclent excuse for It. He sees his wife ill-dressed, and worn looking while the women he sees abroad are just the opposite. He draws a contrast, and a very unpleasant one. He finds his evenings at home dull, and seeks amusement elsewhere, which conduct but increases the lines on the face of the wife, and renders her more sour and gloomy as the years go by. She never sees, probably, that she made a mistake from the beginning of her married life, in overworking herself and neglect in to take neoessary recreation, whic! would have pnt new vigor into soul and body. Many a woman wears herself out with unnecessary work. She thinks it absolutely needlul that the dresses of her children should be tucked, ruffled snd embroidered, and spends weary hours bending over the sewing machine, because she cannot afford to have the work done by others. What good does she accomplish? Are the children any happier for wearing elaborate clothes, Good materials, perfect cleanliness and lain trimming—which will not require ours to flute and iron—will make children look well dressed. It is better to keep strong eyes, a straight back, and a sweet temper, even at the expense of the children. It is well to make one's works as easy as is consistent with order and cleanliness. There is enough to do in any household without adding unnecessary work, and a woman who is slways in her kitchen or at her sewing can pay little attention to the cultivation of her children's minds, or to the social wants of her husbands. A man does not want a wife chiefly to cook, sew, darn his socks, and sweep his house. He wants an entertaining companion and a cheerful friend.

ABOUT WOMEN OF TWENTYFIVE YEARS. New York Star. Tiae mau who meets and loves the woman of twenty-five is truly fortunate, and she is equally fortunate in meeting and loving him, says a writer in a feminine journal. At that age she seldom deceives. She may not have—she is not likely to have then—her fft-st sentimental experience, but such experience at such an age is more thsn sentimental and rarely ever fleeting. She looks back at the youths she imagines she was enamored of between sixteen and eighteen, or often twenty-two, and they ace wore than indifferent or repellaut te her—they are ridiculous to herself. She can not but be grateful to her destiny that her sympathies apd affections have been reserved for a worthy object and a higher end. At twenty-live, if «ver, a woman knows and estimates herself. She is less liable to emotional or mental mistakes. She is far surer of her future, because she feels that her fate is, to a certain*** tent, witLin her own bands. Not only is she lovelier and more lovable, broader and stronger than she has been, but her wedded happiness and powers of endurance are in a manner guaranteed.

GOOD LOOKING QIRLS. The handsomer a girl is, the more looking glass will she require. Take a homely girl, ahd she will fix op her bangs, put on her polonaise, etc., with more grace, and in less time, than the most adorable Venus that ever kept a dry goods clerk up till half-past twelve. Good looking girls, as a general thing, can make the immaculate rouge fly around and splash up the whole front of a mirror, but when they get in the kitchen they prove about as useless as June bugs on November buckwheat cakes. Good looking girls weren't made to live on earth, because they are

Sor

tood looking. Heaven is the only place them, and that's why they all die young. Girls, don,t be handsome if yeu can help it I for whonr you become dazzling you waste all your time thinking how nice you really are*, And we would rather remain on earth viewing Its beauties with a pair of yellow eyes set in a homely head, than be beautiful and see nothing but our own reflection in a mirror.

NEATNESS IN WdMEN.'

A woman may be handsome or remarkably attractive in various ways, but if she Is not personally neat she cannot hope to win admiration, fine clothes will not conceal the slattern. A young woman with her hair always In disorder, and her clothes hanging about her as ir suspended from a prop, is always repulsive. Slattern is written on her person from the crown of her head to the soles of her feet, and if she wins husband be will turn out, in all probability, either an idle fool or a drunken ruffian. The bringing up of daughters to tfe able to work, talk and act like honest, sensible young women, is the special task of all mothers, and In the industrial ranks there is imposed also the prime obligation of learning to respect household work for Its own sake, and the (comfort and happiness it will bring in the future. Housework is drudgery but it most be doue by somebody, and had better be well than ill done. __________________
