Saturday Evening Mail, Volume 10, Number 17, Terre Haute, Vigo County, 25 October 1879 — Page 5

LOCAL items are so scarce now, that reporters can scent a very small one afar off, and bunt it down with the energy and rim of a bloodhound.

THE city clerk is busily engaged in the preparation of the tax duplicates. They will be ready for the Treasurer by the time specified by law.

THE city tax duplicates for 1879 are being rapidly pushed forward to completion by Frank Heany, who has been employed for that purpose.

THE council, at its last meeting, ordered the payment of the reward offered for the arrest and oonviction of any person who fired property in the city.

THIS city attorney has been instructed to draft an ordinance regulating the building of sewers, and providing for the construction of main sewers out of the general fund.

THE supplication of the town clock lias been beard. It is to be repaired, have its face washed, and put to work again. The council don't believe in encouraging idleness.

THB Turner' Society of this city has nearly two hundred members, of which number forty are young ladles. At the recent tournament in Indianapolis they carried off six out of eight prizes.

THE Gazette says Ernest Whitehouse will finish his term in the penitentiary next May. Just so. Fourth of July is looming up iu the distance, and warm weather may be expected next summer.

WHAT ban become of the telephone company which was to have been organized in Terre Haute? Other cities no larger than this have them and patronize them well. There la no reason why such a company should not succeed here if the proper efforts toero put forth.

THK committee appointed to investigate the charges utado against the finance rouunittee, of borrowing money atn bighor rate of interest than it could have been procured, reported to the council that they had examined all the witnesses whose names had been furnished them, and found the charges without foundation. The report was adopted.

THAT oommittee appointed to investigate the affairs of the city clerk's office reported at the last meeting of the council that they found the tax duplicates for 1870 unfinished. Simply this and nothing more. Thus far it is a very mild case of artistic skill of whioh the most ambitious oolored artist would feel proud. Tbe official returns are not all in yet.

ABOUT twenty-five persons have purchased lots in the city cemetery, for whioh they have failed to pay or take out the necessary papers. These lots have aU been made use of by those persons, and iu such cases the law makes wise provision for the infliction of a fine of fSO. The parties are to be notified to come forward and settle immediately, or take tbe consequences,

Ta»R. has been a marked improvement In tbe behavior of the gallery gods in the Opera House of late, owing to the fact that the polioe have taken the matter In band and compelled them to observe the rales of'deoornm, and for which they deserve tbe thanks of the suffering public. In order that tbe good work may be complete they might torn their attention for a short time to tbe lower door, and ^Jeci a few loquacious individuals who are a continual source of annoyance to all order loving people.

Coi'.vrv Commissioner Wilson was In Indianapolis this week, and while there was introduced to the famous establishment of Cbapin & Gore. The lifting machine tempted him to try hia strength, so he took hold of with a will but, instead of lliUng, he waa lifted, and had the life nearly ahaken oat of him. His boots were found on tbe sidewalk, tind tbe remainder of his clothing scattered promiscuously around. It is such tricks as this which ereatesgdlstrast in the bosom of the honest granger, and confirm the belief that the ways of the city are merely delusions and snares akllfully set tojcatoh tbe unwary.

THB city council held a special session last Thursday night to consider the propriety of selling the property over the river, in which they are jointly interested with the oounty, and for which an offer has been received. A committee was appointed to confer with the county commissioners on the subject and report at the next regular meeting of the coun cl). ...... .i ..

A YOUTH who was evidently in search of a lodging house sauntered into one of our churches last Sunday evening, took a cushioned seat near the door, hung his feet carefully over the end of the pew, and proceeded to enjoy the luxury of a sound sleep. He was utterly oblivious of all or any part of the services. Are viva] was brought about by continued application of a number ten boot on the foot of a healthy sexton, and the young man went forth sadly singing "Oat in the cold world, out in the street."

THIS seems to have been a pretty good week for strikes. Tha coopers struck for a small advance per barrel, and got it. The employees of Seath & Hager want an advance of twenty-five cents per day, but have not yet received the consent of their employers to pay it. The puddlers of the lower rolling mill yesterday concluded to strike against the use of slack coal in thefr work, as they claim it takes them two hours longer to complete a day's work than by using block coal. This strike is participated in by over one hundred men. All the result of good times.

AT the jollification meeting last Saturday night the Indianapolis Journal's young man, with th*t keenness of sight peculiar to a more barberotus age, in the darkness of night was able to scan closely the feauture of Dan Yoorhees at a distance of four hundred feet or more and an altitude of three stories, and report minutely the various emotions of his countenance. It is said that the absence of one or more of the senses sharpens tbe remainder. This keenness of sight must by a Kind Providence be intended to cover other failings which have of late been very noticeable.

THK age of superstition is yet a .thing of the present. Attorney Tom. Foley had a dog case on hand the other [day he represented both sides of tbe case. Suit was brought for posession of the animal, and each party was confident of success. Before the case was called for trial, the plaintiff came to Tom and told him to go ahead—it was all right—he was bound to win tbe case—nothing could prevent him—be bad been to see a fortune teller the previous night and for a consideration she had told him be was sure to win. Thus assured the case went on, but strange to tell tbe fortune teller was at fault. The victim of mis plaoed confidenoe is now looking for that fortune teller and swearing vengeance

WORD was received in this city last week of tbe death of Martin Hogan, at Burlington Jnnotion, near MaysvHle Mo., on Thursday last. He was attempting the arrest of one Otto Sharpe, who was charged with forgery at tbe latter named place. Sharpe was known to be a desperate character. Hogan encountered him in a barn, and in the struggle which ensued, Hogan was shot. Although he received his death wound, he held his prisoner securely until assistance arrived, when he turned him over and requested that some one go for a doctor. Medical aid was of no avail, as he died a few hobrs after.

Mr. Hogan will be remembered by our citizens as a gallant soldier during tbe war. He served during tbe whole of the straggle, and for his daring services as scout, at its does he received a Lieutenant'a commission in the regular army, which he held for nearly ten years, after which he returned to ibis city, but soon removed to the west, where be met his untimely death. He wss forty years of age.

LAST Saturday afternoon the Odd Fellows hall at Pimento was dedicated, with the imposing ceremonies of the order. About fifty members of the lodges of this city went down In tbe afternoon to participate. Tbe exercises were conducted by Grand Secretary B. F. Foster, of Indianapolis, In a very Imposing manner, after which the visitors partook of a supper consisting of all tbe good things of the land. Afterwards, Secretary Foster delivered a very entertaining address on the sotgeot of the mission of Odd Fellowship. He was followed by a number of other gentle* men present, each of whom made a seat speech, after which the ex excises brought to a dose.

THE faces of those who earnestly watch the fluctuations of the Chicago grain market from day to day, as set forth on tbe bulletin boards in this city, is quite a study. Of late they have been quite pleasant, because tbe price has been on the advance but when tbe op poslte is the case they assume a very elongated appearance, and as they put their hands in their pockets to furnish the wherewith for another margin, the sight is quite amusing to an outsider. Officer Thompson bad business in Indianapolis, last Tuesday, and went over to attend to it. That finished, he took a stroll about the city to pass away the time. While* standing on one of tbe street corners, he recognized the fami liar form and features of Sam Griffin, on ice wagon. The recognition was mutual, but Sam was put off his guard

Thompson telling him he wa4 no longer on the force, and giving him some advice about giving Terre Haute a wide berth in future, which Sam very thankfully received, and signified his intention or following. Thompson kept him in sight until he secured tbe services of two officers, when a descent was made on the unsuspecting darkey. He sur rendered without a struggle, although be had a revolver in his pocket. He

was brought over here tbe same after noon, and lodged in jail, In his shoot ing scrape with officer Pierce he denies having had any intention of killing him although the bullets came in dangerous proximity. The charge against him is rape. He will doubtless get a taste of justice before be again breathes the air of freedom.
