HAS this city so ordinance prohibiting the owuers of hogs from allowing them to roam at will through town? If it has, why is It not enforced? These two conundrums are respectfully submitted to the marshal for solution. It is about time thia nuisance was abated. Hogs are becoming so numerous on tbe streets that they can be found on almost every ecjuare. it looks picturesque, and is very attractive to the eyes of strangers coming to the city—at least we suppose ^ur worthy marshal thlnka so.

TKX carrier system
waa inaugurated
in this city last Wednesday. Tbe carriers are doing their work well, although a little troublesome to them at first. 1 he position Is no sinecure as the work to be done-really requires moip men than are at preeent engaged in it.
CITIZENS And it a*very difficult matter to pass tbe postoffice, although they have now no occasion to go there. Every morning they forget themselves and walk in to take a look at their old box number. If laughed at they look wise and say they merely dropped in to how the new system is working.

Tbe majority got the best of him, snd be had to succumb to the iron hand of fate.
RESIGNATIONS of members of the police force have been quite numerous of lste, something unheard of before. Various causes have been assigned for it. THE distillery is running to its fullest capacity. They have a book full or orders which they cannot possibly fill for me to come. These orders are some time

coming in from Nsshville, Tenn York, Baltimore, New Orleans, Charleston, 8. C., Boston, St. Louis snd Augusts, Qa. They are at present oonsumim 3,700 bushels of grain per day, wbicf manufacturers about 200 barrels high wines.
THAT versatile and veracious Terre Haute correspondent of tbe Indianspolis Journal, whom a kind providence has favored with a most fertile and imaginative imagination, sent a dispatch to that paper this week announcing the departure for St. Louis of tbe Light Guard, forty in number, to compete for the prize for tbe best drilled company. Tbe item waa a good one and haa tbe advantage of being manufactured from whole cloth.

THB proprietor or the Bllami jfrint Works, of Cincinnati, is In the city on the lookout for a location for his works. He requlree sbout twenty scree, and it Is absolutely neceeaary that it should be on the bank of a stream. He haa been In the neighborhood of Prairleton for the paat two days. His objection to the oity is that it grows up around him and crowds him out. The works are quite extensive and are in constant operation. The number of men employed la forty. It wonld be quite an acquisition to our city.
A FARMER nsmed Joseph Copplc who livee eight miles west of town, oame In to see tbe reunion yeeterdsy. He bitched his team to a post on Second street, near the corner of Main, tying both boraea securely with ropes. The train oame along ana frightened them. THOSE boya who think It la to tbeir advantage to ezohange a comfortable home for the life of a sailor will find they have made a aad mlatake when It la too late to remedy It. A lift on the ocean sounds very well on paper, but when one comes down to the stern reality it Is another matter. Turning out of a bunk in stormy weather at sea and goiug aloft, ta hardly so comfortable aa home, even though it may not be a very good one. Onceln tbe navy there la no change of "ffloers. If men are not treated to tbelr taste they cannot change their situation to soy great extent. However if there is not much profit from flnsncla) point of view, there will be anv amount of experience, and tbe atricteel kind of discipline.
