"Now we are coming to it," the exthief said to himself then aloud:
Oh, Charlie, we have amusement in plenty. Horse racing, hunting, cockfightin?, with now and then a little lynching affair by the Vigilantes and horse thieves. It is pretty lively here sometimes, I assure you," and the owner of The Elm* looked sharply at the other through the waves of sinoke that hovered between. "I suppose so but tell the truth, Miles, isn't there something else in the wind?" "Jfow, Charlie, up to your old tricks again. To you, then, I'll confess that I occasionally do have a source of amusement foreign to those I mentioned. Some time perhaps I'll introduce you to the

There was a hidden meaning in the words, and the visitor knew it, but he did not choose to show his knowledge. He could give a shrewd guess as to what the other meant policy, however, demanded that he should not play too heavily upon this chord, lest he arouse the other.
Puffing a cloud of smoke from his mouth, he watched it sailing slowly upward in »»lue ring's. It was an old trick of Centerbit Charlie's. Miles was watching him keenly, although he did not show it, and thess were the thoughts that ran through his mind: "It's blwsted shame to get away with such a cool cQxtou'er. Don't he do it to the life though? T11W will give me a lesson on masquerading such as I never had before. Jove, but it would have been a good one on me, but for Donald's warning to he-suHpicious and t.'iut mark on his his hand. Ah, Duke Dirrel, you forgot that it WAS 1 gave you that cut, and hail reason to remember it. Thoaght to play it tine, and by George, jou came near doing it too. Mow ahull I manage it? Lead him on, and then at the last moment, when he discovers that .1 know who he is, down he will go into the black hole. Let me see how 1 can work the game."
During this time the New York burglar was also busy in self-communing. "He suspects me that is plain to be seen. I mnst keep my eyes on his hands, and if he attempts to draw, lightning will not be quicker than the way in which I will draw on him. He thinks I am after him. Perhaps he spoke the truth, and there is a little game being played here. Now that I remember, Bogus Bill, the counterfeiter, disappeared about the time Miles came out here. 1 may.yet-work up the case, but at present I am on the track of Donald Blake. I wish to find where he was on the night his father was murmured."
His reflections were interrupted at this point by his host. "I say, my friend, don't y®u thisk we have carried this thing far enough for one sitting?" "@peak plainer. Miles." "I will, then. You have a good makeup but you forget that scar on your hand. But for that you would have deceived me the worrit you everdid. Whatdsyou want hew?, Duke Darrel "Aha! you know me. I have nothing to do with you, Mile&Nickson, at pseeeat. I am on the trail of higher game—iDonald Blake!" "He islwre."
The heavy curtain partedl ami John BlakeYcouisin stepped into view. As he did to the detective arose to his feet, and as if byxaagic a revolver slipped into* his hand. "Do*add Blake, I went you!" he said.
There was a mocking laugh. Niokaoo pressed bietfoot upon the concealed spring A sudden .crash followed, and Duke Eiarrvl and the chair vanished as if by magic. The bulietiroai his revolver actually*cut a lock from Donald Blake's hair as it burtied past his head.
Where the Shadow Detective had been but five second* before, there yawned a black aperture tome three or more feet «square, from which arose the damp, dead-. Jy vapor, and sickening odor of dungeon [TO BK CONTINUED.]

A OR AVE STOR r"
The following from the N. Y. Graphic adds another to the long cata.OKue of proofs that we should always go abroad to hear the news:
Ellas Llpsia was a brother of Adah Isaacs Menken, and in life at Sao Francisco a variety ahow manager.
He killed himself. He bad a widow, by name on the stage "C»rrl« Wilson. Sbe decorated his grave with flowers.*
One day, oomlng with more flowers, she found on the grave an elegant floral cross. She found not only tho cross but the yocng woman who placed It there. Sbe asked the young woman why sbe plaoed It there and what was ber name.
The young woman said ber name was Rose Evana. and she bad plaoed it there because in ll/e Ellas loved ber and she loved Ellaa, and tbat Elias loved her much more than be did Carrie Wilson.
Upon this the two ladies became violently exoited, and their language over tho dead man's grave was anything but the language of flowers. "You drove EliaS'to suicide, you said Carrie. "You drove him to suicide, you ," said Rose, "and I can prove it. There, read that, bis letter to tne."
The widow read, in Ellas' handwriting, "I am not in the best oi spirits, for my wife arrived ibis noon from Virginia City and I have bad
The widow said no more. They left the grave covered with flowers. Elias slept tho sleep of variety stage managers.
Rose kept on decorating as before, So did Carrie. But it was observed that they did not decorate the same grave.
Rose had a grave to herself in one portion of Laurel Hill cemetery Carrie stuck by the old mound.
The flower merchants encouraged the two girls and advised them to keep it up.
At last Carrie grew suspicious. She hired a man and bad Elias dug up. The man dug but could not tind Ellas. He found not even a coffin.
Rose bad Elias in death. Sbe had dug Elias up and planted him in another grave.
The end is not yet. M?1
UXOR IN THE FAMILY. Good humor is rightly reckoned a most valuable aid to bappy home life. An equally good and uselul faculty is a sense of humor, or the capacity to have a little fun along with the humdrum cares and work of lite.
We all know bow it brightens up things generally to have a lively, witty companion, wno seeks the ridiculous points of things, and who can turn an annoyance into an occasion for laughter. It is a great deal better to laugh over some domestic mishap than to ory or scold over tbem.
Many hotnes and lives are dull because too deeply Impressed with a sense of the cares and responsibilities of life to recognize its bright, and especially Its mirthful side. Jnto such a household, good but dull, the advent of a witty, humorous friend la like sunshine on a cloudy day. While .it is always oppressive to bear persous constantly striving to say witty or funny, things, it is comfortable to see what a brlgbtenera little fun is—to mako an effort to have Bome.at home. It is well .toturn off an impatient question sometimes, and to regard It trorn a humorosw point of view instead of becoming irritated about it. "W*ife, what Is tbexeaaonl can never Qnd a clean sbiet.?" exclaimed a .good but rather impatient busband after rummaging all through the wrong drawers. His wlleiooked at hlmatead lly for a moment, half inoilned to be provoked, then with a comical look,«he said: "I never oould guess conundrums I give It up." Then he laughed, and they both laugbed, and she went and got his shirt, *nd he felt ashamed of himself and kissed iter, and then she felt hfopy so, what might have beeu an occasion for hard words and unkind feelings, became just the contrary, all, through the little vein of humor that' cropped out to the surface.
Somechildren have a peculiar faculty for giving a humorous turu to things when tboy are reproved. It does just as well oftantlmes to Jaugb things-off as to scold them off. Laugbter Is better than tears. Let us have a little maFe«flt at home:
DOMESTIC WOMEN.
BY MRS C. H. C.
According to my Ideas of whatoountaw women uught to be in order to fill paoperlv tb&ephore in whiob Providence has placed bar, sbeabould kave no 4uciteations for-dre.®s or show abroad ber thoughts should rest at home and to render tbat home a bappy and prosperoos«ne for ber husband and family sboaid be the greatest deains of ber heart. This she,can accomplish without any hardships,« she 1s aright cniuded. prudent ana careful woman. Faet and management go a great way in properly conducting the aflklre of tho household wbatose woman tan do with the greatest ease and pleasure, another may fail Inthrovgb want of judgment or foresight. And there is a great deal in a certain characteristic which vulgar folks c&ll "gumption." Teu or I would call it capacity or shrewdness—but lor ail that, "gumption" is the best word to convey the idea of that sort of cleverness which seems to make ail odds and ends fit Into aach o* er, rvt hlng In the right place, -.ad kfc^^ L.—mhold machinery going as regular as clockwork wUbcut the least fuss or bluster. In such a dwelling, if the busband Is a reasonable man with a good temper, I tbink there would be a great deal of real comfort aod happiness. Tired with the labors of the field, be would return to his pleasant home si evening, and meeting his smiling wife and neat little ones awaiting bis pre* mice at the supper table, where contentment would so fill his heart tbat be would forget his weariness and think of naught but the happy present.
And after the evening meal was over, former and his family swelvea on the porch or asttiof their dwelling while the cbil-
tbls prosperons imrmsr would seat themselves on the porch or piasKi of thslr dwelling while lbs children would bring oat tbair books sad newspapers—thus making pleasant as w«U as Instructive tb« fading hoars of tbe long summer's day.
