FARM AND CITY.

AN OLD FARMER TELLS HOW IT HAS PAID TO STICK TO ONE AND ESCHEW THE OTHER.

Correspondence Cincinnati Gazette. There was a brusque off-hand readiness to the old man's conversation that I liked. It seemed to strike the other passengers aa well, and one by one tbey drew up around aa. At last, after drift, log from topic to topio, I asked why It is, if contentment obtains so generally among farmers, tjiat so many of their sons aeek the city. It touched him in tender point. "For the reason," be replied, "that a moth burna its wings in the flame of candle. They don't know any better, Attracted by the novelty of dty life, they aeek aalaried positions in dry goods stores, railroadoffloea—anywhere, ID fact, to escape the work of a farm. Bat in twenty years, unless more fortunate than most salaried men, the boys left behind on the form are better off, and

No one in the company had been there, or knew anyone in that county. "Well, 1 was going to name over some of the* farmers out there who have been tolerably successful. There are the Bowdisbes, Fuller and Perry both of them are pretty good examples. Perry coinmonced at $8 a month. I don doubt he could have got |80 in Chicago, or St. Louis, for he waa a sihart, active boy. He isn't more than thirty-eight years old now, and he's taxed for |20,000 or 130,000. Fuller, a couple of years older, began the same way and he's worth aa much. It's clean aa a whistle, too, Not a cent in debt, either of them. Rodney McDale over in' Sugar Grove— did you know him?" "No, I don't know anybody In that aectlon of the State," I repeated. "Rodney began at 96 a month, and left off with f70,000, if he's worth a cent. Ben George is worth aa much if not more, and ne began on 94 a month. He uu«t be getting pretty well along in years though, now. David Annis forked at haying for seventy-live cents a day, and then got trusted for a yoke of oxen and went to work for himself. Tbey used to count him worth 9200,000, and I reokon he Is." "Of course these men worked for themselves?"

aries never have enough ahead to make a start. But give a smart farmer's boy a team, and he'll rent land, workiog'H ou shares. Before you kuow it he'll be buying land, and

A PAPER FOR THE PEOPLE.

My brother went into a

a farm. That was twenty-five years ago, and now I can buy ana sell him five times over. His carpets are little better than ours, and his family carriage of a later pattern. But when we look on the tax duplicate 1 sometimes wonder what he's been doing all bis life!" "You believe, then, that a man can make more money on a farm than in other occupations?" "I didn't say so. But I believe a majority of boys raised on a farm would be much better off in twenty years by remaining on a farm rather than seeking a livelihood elsewhere. Fifty dollars a mouth to start on looks bigger that $10. Walking on sidewalks and working under cover are more aeductive than wallowing.iu the deep, rich, black !oam, or sweating under a harvest sun. But how ia it in the long run? Are you acquainted in Aurora, or Kane county, Illinois?"

a few years he'll

have 100 or 200 acres. That's enough land for the average farmer, although if to industry is added good business ability, ho can farm two or three or ten times aa much with profit. Aunia had over 2,000 acres." "Are the men named exceptions to general rule?'' I asked, aa the old gentleman stopped to clear his mouth of a good slaod chew of tobacco. "No, air." I could name forty or fifty living within tun miles of me who have done as well. Daniel Price, William Niles, Daniel Mayers,—plenty of them. All began with low wages. Some got a start by splitting rails at fifty cents per 100 others chopped wood at twenty-five cents a cord, and others did general ftirm property. If a farmer's boy in auch a country aa thia has the euergy and business management, there's no trouble about making a good living and having a good property at lllty yeara of age. But if he goes to the city, he's likely to remain on a salary—a small one, too for if there's any business in which the applicants do not exceed the places, I've yet to hear of it."

TO A BEREAVED MOTHER. "Send me a word to comfort me for tb» death of my baby," wrote a lady to the late Fanny Fern. And this waa the word she sent:

My dear friend, I might tell you that there are thousands of child lew mother* all over the land, who, like you, are booking far comfort here and there, and find none, but that would not help you. I might tell you, too, that if you knew all the sorrowful histories that have been told me by tongue and pen, for iitanv years, you would be glad that your I'H'hy i* gmu* wht»re therw Is "no more p*ii» but that would not cause you to shed one tear the less, or keep ycu from feeling that your sorrow was harder to bear than theirs. I could tell you that God la good even In thla affliction, but your vision is so dimmed that time only oau enable you to see it. It la because I know that nature must have Its own way or you eould not live and boar it, that I con only say to you now, I am sorry for you. I know just how you go about listening for the little appealing cry that you may never more bean touching listlessly the littla useless clothes that you faahloi with yonr heart so full of love and i-cpe. I, too, have done all this. I have lain with mv cheek close to the my baby's grave leet she sb* oneljr •without me, though 1 knew she waa not there. And yet I have tried to thank Him who Uok her so early, that lb® storms of life which afterwards overtook mo did not burst over her little head. So, as I aay, I ahall not reason with you now, for that were worse than useless. I only reach out my woman's hand, and clasp yours In sympathy, although we never may meet In thla world.

But one thing I know, that in the other world your baby and mine will know us—their mother, else God were not God. By the strong love that name with them, this must be we would not be so cruelly mocked 1/ thla were to be the end.

Now, do not ait down and brood over your grief, if you can help It, Do net glote your blinds and shut out the summer sunshine. Let It warm yon. though

Kre*

ur baby Is cold. You would rather fait ita little warm clasp even for thai lef time, than not to have known the not motherhood, would yon not?

Well, then, warm your poor heart with that bit of comfort. Now there la a lad der reaching to Heaven, only seen by you, only used by you. Heaven ia not now to you the'misty land it used to be. You see clearly. By and by you will bear its mualc, and one little voice your mother'a ear will detect and none who see the peace which illumines your face will know wherefore, aave "He who doeth all things well." And so, with my love, I leave you.

A WISE WORD TO VERDANTSL Do not think for a moment that you can ever beat a gambler's trick, unless you are an expert in "apielmarka." Do not imagine that a button hole toquet cardinal hose and kid gloves, worn on every trivial oocaaion, are any algn of gentleman or wisdom tbey are the mere trappings of a confirmed ninny, who la otherwise unable to impress the public with bis imbecility. Do not believe yourself wise in your own conceit, for then you are only fit for a hotel clerk

Do not attempt to do business with too many Irons in the fire at once, for some of them are pretty sure to get ruined. Do not keep company with tender hearted maiden, and drive all other suitors away, for you are liable to a breach of promise suit. Never wrestle with trouble, for you are sure to overthrown in reason, and be awarded but your pains for it. Fever give justice "back talk," or be may lengthen' your life by giving you a few days longer, You may sport with the head of a long eared quadruped with impunity, but you should make peace with all when you attempt to tickle his heels with a straw. You may take an infant to theater, but always anticipate-weeks of wretchedness from such a foolish act of total depravity. There are a thousand and one things which you may do, but there is one which stands, sentinel like before your untimely end, warning all paragraphers never to tell what tbey really think of the performers at an en tainment of home talent.
