A CITIZEN of the south end improved his premises the other day by putting a -new gate on his barn, which caused his cow to lose her reckoning and pass unconsciously by. His three year old hopeful thought he saw away out of the difficulty, and and unwittingly suggested—"Papa why not peint yeur name on the gate so she can tell where you live."

DUIUNQ the bested term it is absolutely neoeattary that dtUens should keep their premises in such condition that no complaints will be heard from the board of health. Some of the alleys are in a very filthy condition at the present time. All sorts of garbage is slowed to accumulate, and the polioe complani, that when their duty compels them to notify parties to clean up they are often muoh abased by persons who ought to know better. This should not be so, snd where the public good demands it the law ahoold be striotly enforced.

A sTABTcnra Tninor lMHi been going the rounds of the city tor the past week that typhoid fever had made its appearance in onr midst, and hsd assumed such alarming proportions thst It almost amounted to an epidemic. It is at present oonfined within the limits of the third ward, south. It commenced in the vicinity of College and Second streets, but has gradually made its way eastward until it has reached the boundary of the ward. As fcr as can be learned, the following is a list of the oases which have been reported up to last night:

Charles M. Stats, died on Wednesday Mrs. Martin Kereheval, Second street south of Farrington, died Tuesday night Martin Keroheval, seriously 111 1 Mrs. T. R. Oilman, Mrs. Alpbonso Oilman, Miss Flora Gilnsn, Second street south of Farrington. All very severe Alpbonso Oilman, recovered: Mrs. Marcellus Goodman, Second street near Farrington, not expected to recover Mrs. William Ash, Third street south of Sheets, very low Mr. Henry Hawtln's family, 8econd street north of Vine, five eases Mrs. Peter Lightfoot, Second street south of Vine, quite sick Peter Llgbtfoot, reoovered child o» Mr. Lutz, Seoond street near Farringon, died last week Mrs. Wm. Abbott and child, First between Farrington, and College Mr. Bryant, employed at hominy mill, living near oorner Parke and Second Mrs. James Cody and child (the latter nearly well), Seoond street north 'of College Mrs. Graft and child, Second street north Farrington

Miss O'Brien, at house of Mrs. Watson, near oorner Farrington and Third lady on First near corner of College street child of Charles Owens Robert Williams, quite sick, supposed to be typhoid Mrs. Yelke, First street lady and ohild on First north of Vine, two cases a lady and child, at Owens' boarding house, corrar Ohio and First Daughof Mr.Glick, corner Walnut and First Albert Newkom, on Seoond street between Oak and Wilson Mrs. Jacob Shaffer a bad case, Seoond street between College and Vine Mrs. Ferriob, a critical esse, corner of Farrington and Third and a ohild of a Mr. Grey, in the old brewery building on first street, opposite Farrington James Bryant,y^t Parke and Second, is quite low.

Several other cases of sickness are re ported, which have been found not to be typhoid fever.

The scourge, for it can now be oalled by no other name, owes its origin to the filthy state of the city at the present time. A member of the board of health says the city never was in such a condi tion, from a sanitary point of view, as it la at the present time. The great cattle pens of the distillery are in the most filthy condition. There are two slaugh ter pens in the neighborhood, around which have accumulated great masses of putrid blood, whioh is actually one crawling mass of corruption. The soak vats of the coopers are another prolific source of disease. Swine are allowed to be kept in the city. There is a grease factory on the island immediately below the city, which raises an unearthly stench. Another source of evil is the vaults, not one of which in two hundred has been cleaned or disinfected since the time they were dug. What wonder then that the city Is infested with a plague? It is said the disease is typhoid fever. This the members of the board of health deny. Tbey say It is a form of typhus fever, but cannot tell very much about it, as no reports are made to them as to the esses in town. The board of health are in no way to blame, as they have done, and are at present doing, all in their power to arrest its progress. They say it may arise from various causes, such as foul air, improper food, milk, bad water, and other causes. In order that they may arrive at the oause tbey are preparing a list of questions to be answered by the person attacked by the disease,or someone for him, stating age, when there was any sickness in the family previous and what the disease was, where their groceries were purchased, also meat and milk, and where they get the water used In the house. By using these answers, the board are of the opinion that tbey can immediately arrive at the oause of the disease and with the 00 operation of the polioe remove it. 4

GREAT preparations sre being msde by the Morton Post No. 51 of the G. A. R. for a grand soldiers' reunion at this point, to be held on the 1st, 2d snd 3d of October, upon which ooossion an encampment for the State of Indiana will be formed. The law of the order requires eight posts to form an encampment. Of this number Indisna has at present five, there being eight more awaiting muster. At preeent they are attached to the department of Illinois.

The originators of the ooming reunion are making every effort to have the largest gsthering ever held in the west. It Is expected thst at least twenty thousand persons will be present. One of the principal featuree will be a sham fight in which over three thousand veterans will engage.

President Hayes will be present, and many other notables from all parts of the country.

"W-w-w-wharye been?" inquired a tonsorial artist of his promising heir the other evening, upon the return of the said heir from one of his expeditions, "No whar, pop." "I b'lleve yer jest lyln' to me this yer ole man thinks you's been down swimmin, so he'll jes disorganize a court, hear de ev-i-dence, and pass sentence scoordin' to his judgment." The court was instantly organized without any regard to the usual formalittes incident to such occasions, a witness was called who made out a clear case against the culprit, after which the court summed up to himself and delivered the following verdict: "John Henry, ye knows yer old dad don't 'low yer to go swimmin' at no time, Dte yer court's been mftds up for yer special benefit, The ev i-dence is all in, an' no lawyer can shake the 'pinion of this court. So that yer might have fair play I have assumed the orful sponsibillty of actin' as jedge an' jury in de case, and I also ap pint myself executioner to see dat de sentence of this court is faithfully carried out. Jes step in the backroom with yer ole father fur a minute." John Henry was accordingly yanked into the back room, from whenoe was soon heard the sound of the descending broomstick, in vindication of the law of that household, and shrieks that would do honor to a Comanche Indian.

THE McKeen Cadets, numbering about thirty-six, marched out to the fair grounds last Saturday, and have been in camp there all week. A visit to the camp yesterdsy showed thst the boys were enjoying themselves very much, and that they are attaining a pro ficiency in arms which is truly wonder ful, considering the short timp which they have been organized.

Floral Hall is used as. their sleeping apartment, the beds being ranged along each side, the arms stacked along the aisle, in the center. The Captain's tent is just north of the building, snd within easy call in case his presence should be required. Immediately south of the Hall is placed the guard house, which luuCproved to be more ornamental than useful, as there bss been very little use for It thus far. The day's work commences at five o'clock a. m., at which hour the reveille ia sounded, when the boys hsve to turn out, dress and report for duty in the space of twenty minutes, At uight taps are sounded at ten o'clock and all have to be in bed In twenty minutes or they find themselves in the dark. Goard is mounted all night, there being four ot the men stationed around the camp. Their rations consist of buns, bread, ham, eggs, breakfast bacon, potatoes, tea, coffee, milk and butter, which are served out to them in abundance at regular intervals, and which disappear with lighting like rapidity Since Wedneeday there has slso been added to their supply innumerable pies, which have been kindly furnished by the ladiee, and which are highly appreciated.

Yesterday the camp was visited by a great many people from the city for whose benefit a good programme was arranged, and which was faithfully carried out. They bad running races, walking races, a match game of base ball, several shooting matches snd a parade by the oompany. The last item on the programme was very highly appreciated by those who bad the pleas* ure of witnessing it, and did credit to th.se who were engaged in it. The orders were all obeyed with the utmost skill and precision and elicited wall merited applause from the spectators. Capt. THE City Council held a special ses sion, last evening, for the purpose of adopting home measures to prevent the spread of the fever which is raging in our midst, and to confer with the Board of Health upon the subject. In the absence of Mayor Havens, the chair wss occupied by Mr. Scbloss.

Dr. Roberts, in behalf of the Board of Health, made a statement of the sanitary condition of the city, which was the same In substanoeas the statement In another part of the paper. After considerable discussion by the council, during which time all the ordinances relating to sanitary affairs were thoroughly investigated, the following resolution wss adopted until suoh time as an ordlnanoe oan be psssed to cover the ease In point: "Resolved, That the day police be and are hereby directed to Inspect the sanl tary oondition of their resi

A resolutfon was also adopted for the cutting down and removing of weeds and grass from the lots and sidewalks of persons owning real estate or "renters who live in rented homes." As there is no penalty attached, it can be obeyed or disobeyed at pleasure.

NEAR Plslnfield, on the Vandalla road, some miscreant obstructed the track yesterdsy morning and caused a terrible accident. A freight train consisting of sixteen cars was piled: up in confusion.1' Engineer Sherburne escaped unhurt, also Henry Sachs, the fireman. One of the brakemen, Richard Fravell, lost his life he was found under a truck with bis skull terribly fractured. It was the most destructive wreck which has ever occurred upon this road, and the fiend who caused it ought to be bung to the nearest telegraph pole as a warning to alj ofJUIs kind.

THE Vigo Agricultural Society will hold their annual fair at the grounds near this city on September 9, 10, ll, 12, inclusive. The msnagement is doing sll in its power to make it a success. The premium list foots up |4000, and it is hoped the public will take enough interest in the matter to insnre a success financially.
