ONLY JONES.2
The officers of Her Majesty's Twentyfourth and Eighty-fourth Infsntrv were sitting around their mess table, to Castletown, tbe capital of the Isle of Man one evening more than thirty years ago —that is, all of them, except on©, but «hen, that one was only Jonee. Nobody minded Jonee. Even his pecoliaritiea had begun to be an old sulgect for ^'chaffing," and indeed, he had paid suoh small attention to their "chaffing" they bad come to find it little pleasure, and, after some weeks of discomfort, Lieutenant Jones had been allowed to choose his own pleasures without much interference.
These were not extravagant. A fa vorite book, along walls in &U kinds of weather, and a sail when tbe weather was favorable. He would not drink he said it hurt his health he would not shoot—be said it hurt his feelings be would not gamble—be said it hurt his consoience and he did not care to flirt or visit the belles of the oapital—he said I it hurt his affections. Onoe Captain Dei Renzy lispingly wondered whether it was possible to "hurt bis honor," and Jones calmly answered that "it was not possible for Captain De Reuzv to do se»"
Indeed, Jones constantly \i Jtted all these gentlemen's ideas of proper behavior, but for some reason or other, no one brought him to account for it. It was easier for them to shrug their shoulders and call him "queer," or say it was "only Jones," or even to quietly assert his oowardioe.
One evening Colonel Underwood was discussing a hunting party for the next day. Jones walked into the room and was immediately accosted: "Something new, Lieutenant. I find there are plenty of hares on this island, and we mean to give puss a ran to-mor-row. I have beard yon are a good driver. Will you Join us?" "You mast excuse me. Colonel. -such a thins is neither in toe wayof dutv nor my pleasure. I thank you, Colonel, for your courtesy, but I see no good reason frr accepting it. I am sere my horse will not approve of it and I am sure the hare will not like it and I am not a good rider therefore I should not enjoy it." "You nesd not be a/raid," said the Colonel, rather sneeringly. "The country is quite open, and those low Manx walls are easily taken." "Excuse me, ColoneL I am afraid. If 1 should be hurt it would cause my mother and sisters very great alarm and anxiety. I am very much afraid of doing this."
What was to be done with a man so obtuse regarding conventionalities, and who boldly asserted bis cowardice
It
The
Colonel turned away half contemptuously, and Ensign Powell took Jones' place.
The morning proved to be a very bad one, with the prospect of a rising storm and as the ptrty gathered In the barrsok yard, Jones said earnestly to his Colonel:
('I
am afraid, sir, you will meet with a storm." think so, Lieutenant bat we to dine at Qwynne Hall, and we fcW'-l get that far at any rate."
So drove rather gloomily awav in the rain, Jones attended to the military duties assigned him, and then •bout nooa wa ked^seaward. It
WAS
hard work by this time to keep his footing on the narrow quay but amid the bliuding spray and mist he saw quite a crowd of men going rapidly toward the
geyond
reat shelving scarlet rocks, a mile the town. He stopped an old Bailor and asked: "Is anything wrong?" "A little steamer, air, off the Oalf of Man she is drifting this way, an' indeed, 1 am afraid she will beta rocks afore to-night."
Jones stood still a moment, and then followed the crowd as fast as the storm would let him. When he joined them they were gathered on the summit of a huge rock watching the doomed craft. Mhe was now within sight, and it was evident that her seamen nati almost lost control

her. She most, ere long, be
filing by the waves upon the jagged and frightful rock* toward which she was drifting. In the lull of the wind, not only the booming of the minute gun, but also the shouts
ol
tbe imperiled
crew could be heard. "What can be done?" said Jonee to an old man, whoee face betrayed tbe strongest emotion. "Nothing, sir, I am afraut. If they'd managed to round ta rocks, she would have gone to pieces on ta sand, and there are plenty of men who would hare risket life to save life. But how are we to reach them from this height?" ••How far are we above water?" "This rock goes down like a wall, forty fathoms, sir." "What depth of water at tbe foot?'* "Thirty feet or more." "Good. Have you plenty of light, stroag rope?" "Much as you want bat let me tell you, sir. you' oan't lire three minutes down there. Tbe first wave will dash
on ta rocks' and dash you to pioes. 'lentj at you can't swim yoi "Do yon know, old man, what surf swimming Is? I have dived through the surf at Nulrabeva." "God blew von, sir." I thought no white man

but
con
id do that same."
While this conversation was going on, Jonee was directing himseir of all his superfluous clothing, and cutting ont the sleeves of his heavy peajacket with |ila pocket knife. This done, he some rope through them.
The men watched him with eager In* Jterest, and seeing their inquisitive looks, he said: "Tbe thick sleeves will prevent the rope cutting my body, yon see."
I
"Ay. ay, sir I see now what yon are doing.'' "Now, men, 1 have only one request. Give me plenty of rope as fast aa 1 draw on yon. When 1 get on board you know how tq mak* cradle, I suppose." "Ay, ay, air t«u? iutw are yon going to reach the water 7 "I am going to ^.unge down." I have dived from the main yard of the Alax before this. It was a high leap."
He passed a double coil of tbe rope round hie waist, examined it thoroughly to see that there was plenty to start with, and saying, "Now, friends, stand oat of tbe way and let me have a dear start," be raised his bare head one moment toward heaven, and taking a short run, leaped, as from the spring board of a plunge bath.
Such an anxious crowd as followed that leap! Great numbers, in spite of tbe dangerous wind, lay flat On their breasts, and watched him He
Drawing continuously on the men for more repe—whioh they paid out with deafening cheers—he met yrave after wave In the same manner, diving under them like an otter, and getting nearer to the wreck with every wave, really advancing more below the water than above it.
Suddenly tbe despairing men on board heard a clear, hopefol voice. "Help at hand, captain! Throw me a buoy."
And in another minute or two Jones was on deck, and tbe ebeers oa the little steamer were echoed by the -oheers of tbe crowd on land. There of theorowd OB
land. .There was not a momentto be lost she'was breaking up fust. but it took but' a few minutes to fasten a strong cable to tbe small rope *nd draw it on board, and then a seoond cable, and the communication was complete. "There is a lady here, sir,'" said the captain. "We most rig up a chair for her she never can walk that dangerous rope." "A slight little thing half .a •child sir."
There was plenty of help waiting for the half dead seamen and the lady, her father and tbe captain bad been put in tbe carriage of Brad don and driven rapidly to bis hospitable ball. Jones, amid the confusion, disappeared. He had picked up an oilskin coat and cap, snd when every one turned to thank their deliverer, be was gone. No one knew him the sailors said they believed bim to be "one of the military gents, by his rigging," but the individuality of the bero bad troubled no oceointil tbe danger was over. In an hour the steam* er was driven en the recks, and went to pieces: and, it being by $bis time quite derk, every one went home.
Tbe next dsy the hunting party .returned from Gwynne Hall, the storm having compelled themtostop all-night, and at dinner that evening tbe wreck and tbe hero of it were the theme of every one's conversation. "Such a plucky fellow," said Ensign Powell. "I wonder who he was. Gwynne says be was a stranger, perhaps one of that crowd staying at tbe abby." "Perhaps," saia Captain Marks, "it was Jones." "Ob, Jones would be afraid of his mother."
Jones made a satirical bow, and-said, pleasantly, "Perhaps it waa Powell," at which Powell laughed and said "Not if be knew it."
In a week tbe event had been pretty well exhausted, especially as there was to be a great dinner and baU at firaddon, and all tbe officers had invitations. This had a peculiar interest, for the young lady who had been saved from tbe wreck would be present, and rumors of ber riches ana beauty had been rife for several daya. It was said the little steamer was her father's private yacht, and that be was a man of rank and influence.
Jones said he would not go to tbe dinner, ss be or Saville must remain for everting drill, and that Saville loved a good dinner, which he oared very little about. Saville coald return in time to let bim ride over about 10 o'clock and see the dancing. Saville rather wondered why Jones did not take bis place all the evening and felt half injured at his default. But Jones bad a curiosity about tbe girl be had saved. To tell tbe truth he was nearer in love with her than he had ever been with a woman, and he wished in talm blood, to see if she was aa beautiful as his lancy bad painted her during thoae a#ful moments that be held ber high above the waves.
As he passed, the sqaire* remembered be bad not been to dinner, and stopped to say a few courteous wocas, and Intro-, duced his oompanion, "Misa Conyers." "Lieutenant Jones,"
But ii" sooner did Mis* Ooureii hoar Lieutenrnt Jones' voice tbjan she gave a joyful cry, and, clapping Her hands together, said: "I have found himf Papa! Papa! I have found him!"
Never was there suoh an interruption In a ball. Tbe company gathered in excited groups, and papa knew the Lieutenant's voice, and the Captain knew it, and poor Jonee, unwilling enough, baa to acknowledge the deed and be made a bero of.
It was wonderful after this night what a obange took place in Jone7s quiet way*. His books and bis boat seemed to bave lost their charms, and as for bis walks, tbey were all in one direction, and ended at Braddon Hall. In about a month Miss Conyers went away, and then Jonee began to haunt tbe postmen and to get pretty little letters, which always seemed to take a great deal of an swering.
Before tbe end of tbe winter be bad an invitation to Conyers to spend a month, and a furlough being granted, be started off in great glee for Kent. Jones never returned to the Eighty-fourth. The month's furlongh waa indefinitely lengthened—in feet, he sold out and entered upon a diplomatic career under the immediate oars of Sir Thomas Conyers.
Eighteen months after the wreck, Colonel Underwood read aloud at the same mesa, a description of the marriage of Tbomaa Jonee, of Hilford, Haven, to Maty, only child and heiress of Sir Thomas Conyers, of Coi Kent. And a paragraph that "The Hon. Thomas Jones, with bis bride, had gone to Vienna on diplomatic service of great importance." —s

the water at leaat twenty-five feet from the cliff, and disappeared in its dark, gloomy depths.
When he rose to the surface he saw just before him a gigantio wave, but be bad time to breathe, and before it reached him, he dived below its center. It broke in passionate fury upon the rocks, but Jones rose far beyond it. A mighty cheer from the men on the shore reached him, and now he began in good earnest to put his Pacific experience into praotioe.
"Just hi* luck," ssid PowelVi#i "Just bis pluck," said UnderwooUand for my part, wben I come acro« one of these fellows again that are afra'd of hurting tbeir mothers and sisters, and not afraid te say so, I sbsil treat bim at a bero just waiting for hla opportunity, Here i* the Hon.
