BLOWN AWAY.
BY CHARLES BARNARD,
There were three of them—Kitty, Mary, and little Tommy,—the children of the btatida master at Bitot Klver Janatifen, oil ttfe Great South tVoeteru Railroad. The station stood alone on the open prairie, mllea and miles from anywhere in particular. Black River flowed through the motyitaina, a hundred ixlilee away %o the. north a$id on clear days, the snoWy fhountainit could be seen glimmering on the grassy horizon. The ilno leading to the Black River met the South Western here, and thus it was the place was called Blaok River Junction.
The station master and his wife and three children lived in the little depot quite happily, but there was not another family within ten miles, in any direo tion."
At times the chiidreu thought it rather lonely. There was nothing in particular, to be done, except to watch the train that stopped at the junction several times a day. Once in a while, a freight ear would do lo/t on the side track, and the children soon found that an empty freight car makes a capital playhouse. They could keep house in the corners and make visltn, or sit by the open door and make believe they were- having a ride.
One rnfcrning, they were wakened by & curious humming souud out of doors, and they all scrambled up and looked out of the window. How the wind did blow! It whistled and roared round the bouse, and played on the" telegraph wires upon tne roof as upon a huge harp. As the wire* were fastened to the rooi, tho house became a great? musicbox, with the children inside. After breakfast, the morning trains arrived, but the wind was so high that the panaengors were glad to hurry from one train to another as quickly as possible. Then the trains went away, and the great wind harp on the roof sang louder than ever.
The station master said it blew a gale, and that the children must stay in the Bouse, lest they be blown away into the prairie and be lost. The station master'* wife said it was a pity the children must stay in the house all day. There was an empty freight car on the side track perhaps they might play in that. The station master thought this a govd idea, and he took Kitty by the hand and Tommy in his arms, while Mary took bold ol his ooat, and they all went out to the empty car. Whew! How it did blow! They certainly thought they would be lilted up by the wind and blown quite into the sky. The empty oar was warm and snug, and, once in•ido, they were quite out of the way of the wind.
Mary thought the rear eud would bo a good place to keep house, but ^ommy

keep house at both euas of the empty oar. This was a nice plan, for Jt gave them a chance to visit each otbbr, and the open part by the door made a grand protneuade to-waik on.
Louder and louder roarod the gale. Safe and snug lu the car, they went oil with theft: plajpntkthduglf nothings the weather omeidi.
Suddenly thdNcaf stauec to shake and they stopped iu their housekeeping and rub to the door to see what had happened. ft "Why, it's mdvinglJJoiuehody'spualir lng it," said Mary. "CUes are Wtkimt wrway thmafu. f!o

the platform? What wiir the matter with the station? iLwaa moving away No, it was Uie car. It bad left the siding and had roiled out upon tbe main line and was moving faster and faster along tbe road. "Oh, we must get out! They are taking us away." "No, no, said Kitty.
This was a good plan, but bow were they to carry It out? Tbe brake wheel was ou top of tbe car, and they were Inside. Faster and faster rolled the car. It begau to rattle and roar as It dragged along by a swift engine. In a moment? Tommy to cry. Mary trlod to look brave, and Kitty stared hard at the level prairie flying past. It was of no v.»e. They all brokr down together and had a hearty cry alone In the empty car as it rolled ou aud on before tbe gale.
Tbe station master's wife rolled up her sleeve* to put the house in order while tho children were safely out of the way. The station master, feeling sure the chiidreu were safe !n tbe freight car, sat irii bis office uesrly all tho ciornl: At last, tho -s-tb *ere made, Mh» dliiii-jr flit on the &n», fttH tho mother wotedeftid ho*- tho cirls ^*-?ro getting on in tbeir play house or. the track. She threw a shawl ovor i. aoad and went out on tbe platform At once, tbe wind M**' tbe shawl ov ber head, and she could not *ee exactly where she atood. Turning ber back to the wind she began to call tbe children. How loudly tho wind roared through the telegraph wire#! Perhapa they could not bear in all thta din. Maybe they w«re inside tbe ear, out of bearing. She walked on toward the aiding. Not a thing to be seen! She wo mi ami if there bad not been a mistake? Perhaps tbe car was on the other aide-track? No, the rails were unoccupied as far a* she conld see in every direction. What did it mean? What had
ned? She staggered back into the station and startled her busband with a cry of despair. •'The eaij The children
The station master ran out upon the platform aud looked up and down tit tine. Not a car insight! It had been blown away before the terribla wiud, and was perhaps at this instant rolling swiftly ouward with its precious load to destruction. What would happen to it? Would it meet a train or run into a station? Woula the children try to get out or would hey stay in the ear till it was wrecked? lie &praug to the door'of the depot to telegraph the terrible news down the line, but just as he opatiod the door he saw a faint white cloud on the western horison. It was a train. ijelpwan coming. At the same instant, his wife apleared with new grief and terror in her eyes. "I cannot get a call in either direction. The wires are blown down."
This only added to the danger, for there was now no meaus of sending' word In advance of the runaway car. It must go on to its fate without help or warning. "Help is coming, mother. Here's a train bound east."
Nearer and nearer came the train, and the fatuer and mother stood watoblng it as it crept along the rails. It seems as if it would never oouie. At last it reached the platform and proved to be a passenger train bound up the'Blaok River Road, and not intended to go in the direction in which the car bad been blown away. The instant it stopped, the station master ran to the engineer and told his terrible story. The mother, with quicker wit, louud the oonductor and demanded that the engine be taken off and sent after the children.
The conductor was a matt of regular habits, and such a bold request- struck him as something extraordinary. Take the engine off, aud leave the train and passengers waiting at this lonely station? The idea was preposterous!'Some ol the passengers gathered near, asking what was the matter.
Three children lost, blown away in an empty car! Some one said, "Yes, go at once. We oan wait here till the engine returns."
The conductor said he mu9t telegraph for iustiuctions but some one said, "The wires are down," and the people only cried out the more, "Let the engine go!" so the mother ran to the tender ana began to pull out the pin, that tho engine might «tart. "Hold on, marm," said a brakeraam. "I'll cast her off. Jump aboard, if you want to go. Fire up, Jack, and make her hum."
It was all done in a moment, and away dew the eugine, leaving the conductor and the station master staring in surprise at this singular proceeding, The station master did not feel very happy. He had intended to go witlk the engine, but it would never ao to leave bis post. "Fire steady, Jack," said the engineer, to the fireman, "It isn't any use to get oxcited, for we're iu for a long race." "It's enough to make a fellow excited to see that woman," said the fireman.
Tho engineer turned round, ahd there by his side stood the motbor,h0r eyes straining ahead down the line in search of the miming ones. "Oh, sir! open the throttle wide. Dont try to save lxjhI $t auob, a time as this." "We must keep 'oool, marm, and go steady, or we shall run ou,t of-coal and water and cotoe to a atand-srtll on the in
The woman said not a worcr, T)nt nodded mournfully anJ leaned against the side of the cab for support, ana then the fireman gave her his seat, where she could look out ahead over the line. How the engine shook and roared! The little linger of the steam-guage trembled and rose higher and higher as the steam pressure increased over the raging fire. The engine seemed to be eating up the track in front, and behind, the mis spun out like shining ribbons in the sun. The station and train bad already sunk down out of sight, and the grassy horizon on oither side seemed to fly away in a kind of gigantic waltz. The wind died away to a dead calm, and in a few moments a little breeze sprang up and blow in at the frofit winaows. "We are beating the wind," said the engineer. "If we can keep up this pace vre shall noon overtake tbeiu." .} "Hotf long have they bfeen fcone?" shotted tbe flromau above roar of the Engine.*

The tireraan sprang ont through the forward window and ran along the engine and down upon the cowcatcher. The fireman thought himself a lively nan, but tbe woman was before hiui and sprang up into tbe oar.
