Queen Semiramis.
STARTLING EPISODE OF HISTORY
'Of all my wives,' said King Nioua to Semiramis, 'it is you I love best. None have charms
HIUI
graces like you, and
for you 1 would willingly resign them all.' 'Let the king consider well what be says,' replied Setniramis. 'What if were to take bim at his word?' •Do so,' returned the monarch 'while beloved by you, I am indifferent to otb ers.' 'So, then, if I ask it,' said Semiramis *yoH woula banish all your other wives, and love me alone! I alone should be your consort, the partaker of your pow er. and queen of Assyria?' •Queen of Assyria! Are you not so already,' said Ninus, 'since you reign by yonr beauty over the king?' 'No—no,' anewered his lovely mis tress 'I am at present only a slave whom you love. I reign not—I only cbarm. When I give an order you are consulted before I am obeyed.' 'And to roign. then, you think so great a pleasure?' 'Yes, to one wbo has never experienced it.' 'And do you wish, then, to experience it? Wonld you like to reign a few days in my place?' 'Take care, O king! do not offer too much.' 'No, I repeat it' said the captivated monarch. 'Woula you like, for one whole day, to be sovereign mistress of Assyria? If yon would, I consent to It. 'And shall all which I command be executed?' •Yes, I will resign to you, for one en tire day, my power and my golden sceptre. 'And when shall this be?' 'To-morrow, if you like.' 'I do,' said Semiramis, aud she let her head fall upon the shoulder of the king like a beautiful woman asking pardon lor some caprice which she has yielded to.
The next morning Semiramis called ber women and commanded them to dress ber magnificently. On her bead •be wore a orown of precious stones, and appeared thus before Ninus, who, en chanted with ber beauty, ordered all the officers in the palace to assemble in the state chamber, and his golden sceptre to be brought from the treasury. He then entered the chamber, leading Semiiouiis by the hand. All prostrated themselves before the aspect of the king, who con ducted Semtraml8 to the throne and seated her upon it. Then ordering the whole assembly to rise, be announced to the oourt that they were to obey, dur the whole day, Semiramis as him-
ing 86 If.
So saying, he took up the golden soeptre, and placing it in the hands ot Semiramis, 'Queen,' said be, 'I commit to you the emblem of sacred power and command with sovereign authority. All here are your slaves, and I myself am nothing more than your servant for the whole of this day. Whoever shall be remiss in executing your orders, let him be punished as if be bad disobeyed the commands of the king.'
Having thus spoken, the kiug knelt down before Semiramis, who gave bhn, with a smile, her hand to kiss. The courtiers theu passed In succession, each making oath to execnte blindly the orders of Semiramis. When the cere mony was finished, the king made her bis compliments, and asked ber how she had managed to go through it with so grave and majestic an air. 'While they were promising to obey me.' said Semiramis, 'I was thiuking what I should command each of them to do. I have but one day ot power, a ad I will employ it well.'
The king laughed at this reply. Semiramis appeared more piquant and amiable than ever. 'Let us see,' Mid Niuus. 'hew you will continue your part. By what order* will you l*gin 'Let the secretary of the king approach my throne,' said Semiramis in a loud voloe.
The secretary approached, and two slaves placed a little table before him. 'Write,' said Semiramis: ''Under penalty of death, the governor of the citadel of Babylon is ordered to yield up iheoommxud of the citadel to htm who sball bear this order.' Fold thia order, seal it with the kiug's seal, and deliver to me this decree. Write now, •Under penalty of death, the governor of the slaves of the pa 1 a*» Is ordered to resign the command of the slaves into the hands of the person who sball present to him this order.' li it, seal it with it the king')* seal, and deliver to me thia decree. vVrite again, "Under penalty of death, tbe general of the army of Babylon is ordered to resign the oitumaud of the army to bim who shall be tbe bearer of this command.' Fold, seal, and deliver Ibis decree to me.'
She took tbe three orders thus dictated and put th«m in ber bosom. The whole oourt was struck with consternation the king himself was surprised. •Listen,' said Semiramis. 'In two hours hence let all the officers of the state come and offer me preeenta, as is the custom on the accession of new princes, and let a festival be prepared for tbi# evening. Now let all depart, Iet my faithful *arv.«ni Nmaa alone renv«io. I bav» to consult hi in npou afTtirs of state.'
When all tbe resl bad gon- oat: •YOB see,' said Setuiraoiis, 'that t) know bow to play the queen.'
Ninus laughed. •My beautiful qaeen,' Mid be, 'you play your pert wonderfully well but if your servant may dare to question y©u.
Nevertheless, this was my motive: I have a vengeance to execute against the three officers whom these orders menace.' •Vengeance! and wherefore?' he first, tbe governor of tbe ottadel, 1* nuB-t»ye«l, and frightens me every time 1 uir-et bim the second, tbe obief of nUvee, I ^ate because he threatens me with rivals the third, tbe general of army, deprives me too often of your compxny you are constantly in "the camp/

*'ifflcieut re taou*.'
The geutie of tbe court now came to present their gi.ts to tun qneen. Some gave precious sv. »w others, of a lower rank, flowers ami fruit* and tbe slaves, havin* nothing to give, gave nothing. Among these last were three young brothers, who bad come from the Caucasus with Semirauiin, and bad res cued the caravan in which Hie women were from an enormous ttger 'And you,' said she to tbe three brothers, as tbey ptssed the throne, 'have vou no present to make your queen?' 'No other,' replied the first, pire, •than my life to defend ber.' 'None other,' replied the second, Artaban, 'than my saber against ber enemies.' 'None ether,' replied tbe third, Asaar, 'than the respect aud admiratiou which ber presence inspires.' 'Slaves,'said Semiramis, Mt is you who have made me the most valuable presents ol tbe whole court, and I will not be ungrateful. You who have offered u*e your sword against my enemies, take this order, carry it to the general of the army eucamped under the walls of Babylon, give it to him and see what he will do for you. You who have offered me yonr life for my defense, take this order to the governor of the citadel aud see what be will do tor you. Aud you who offer me the respect and admiration which my presence inspires, take this order to the commandant of the palace and see what will be tbe re ault.'
Never had Semiramis displayed so much gayety, so much tolly and so muoh grace, and never was Ninus so captivated. Nor were her charms lessened in his eyes when a slave, not having executed properly an iusigniffioaut order, she commanded his head to be struck off, which was immediately done.
Without bestowing a thought on this trivial matter, Ninus still continued to converse with Semiramis till evening and tbe fete arrived. When she enter ed tbe saloon which bad been prepared for tbe occasion, a slave brought ber plate on which was tbe bead of tbe de capitated eunuch. "Tis well,' said she, after having ex amined it. "Place it on a stake in tbe oourt of tbe palace, that all may see it, and be you there on that spot to pro claim to every one that the man to whom this bead belonged lived three hours ago, but that having disobeyed my will, bis bead was separated from bis body.'
Tbe fete was magnificent sumptuous banquet was prepared in the gar dens, and Semiriuias received tbe homage of all with a grace and majesty perfectly regal. She continually turned to and conversed with Ninus, rendering him tbe most distinguished honor
You are,' she said, 'a foreign king oome to visit me in my palace I must make your visit agreeable to you''
Shortly after the banquet was served Semiramis confounded and reversed all ranks. Ninus was placed at tbe bottom of tbe table. He was the first to laugh at this caprice, and the court following bis example, allowed themselves to be placed, without murmuriag, according to the will of the queen. She seated pear herself tbe three brothers of the -Caucasus. 'Are my orders executed she de manded of them. 'Yes,'they replied.
The fete was very gay. A slave having, by the torce of habit, served the king first, Semiramis had bim beaten with rods. His cries mingled with the laughter of the guests. Every one was inclined to merriment. It was a comedy in which eacb played his part. Toward the end ot the repast, when wine bud added to the eeneial gayety, Semiramis rose from ber elevated seat and said 'My iords. tbe treasurer of tbe empire has read me a list of those who this morning have brought me their gifts of congratulation on my joyful accession to the throne. One grandee alone of tbe oyurt has failed to bring bis gift.' •Who is it?' cried Ninus 'he must be punished severely.' 'It is you yourself, my lord—you who speak. "What have you given to the queen this morning
Ninus rose, and came with a smiling countenance to whisper something in the ear of the queen 'The queen is insulted by ber servant,' cried Semi ram fs.
I embrace your knees to obtain my pardon. P*rdon me, beautiful queen,' said he 'pardon me.' And be added in lower tone, I would that this fete were finished.' 'You wish, then, that I should abdicate?' said Semiramis. 'But no—I have still two hours ts reign,' aud at tbe same time she withdrew her hand, which tbe king was covering with Kisses. 'I par don not,' said she, In aloud voice, 'such an insult on the part of a slave. Slave, prepare thyself to die 'Silly child tbat thou art!'Mid Ninus, still on ids knees 'yet I give way to thy reiun will soon be over!'
You will uot then be angry,' said she in a whisper, 'at something I am going to order at }bis moment •No,' said he. 'Slaves,' s*id she, aloud, 'seise this man —that Ninus!'
Ninus smiled and put himself into tbe hand* of the slaves. 'Take biui out of the saloon, lead bim Into the court of the seraglio, prepare everything for bis death, and await my orders.'
Tbe slaves obeyed, and Ninus followed them, laughing, into tbe oourt ol tbe seraglio They passed by tbe head of tbe disobedient ennucti. Then Semiramis plao*d herself on the balcony. Ninus bad suffered his hand* to he tied. 'Hasten to tbe fortress, *pire you to the camp, Artaban Assar, do yon secure all the asten in the palac«.
Th«s* order* were given in a whisper, and executed immediately. 'Beautiful queen,'said Ninas, laugh* ing, 'this oomedy only wants its demme ment pray let it be a prompt one.' 'I wlil,' said Semiramis. 'Slaves, recollect the eunuch—strike!'
Tbey struck, Ninas had hardly time to utter a cry wheu bis bead fell upon the pavement the smile was still upon his lips. 'Now I a09 queen of Assyria!' exclaim «tf StMiwratnls, 'and perish every one, like tbe eunach and like Ninus, who dare* disooey ray orders!'
