A Few Rules That Some People Ought to Read and all Observe,

Seat yourself quietly.

V,

Avoid loud t&lkiog.

«n

Refrain from stupid jokes on tbe pacity of your appetite. Do not rattle your knife and fork.

for

Remember a knife was made cutting, a fork and spoon for conveying food to tbe mouth.

Use a knife to cut meats, but never fish or other soft food. Never use a knife to cut meats, where a fork or spoon may be substituted

Eat leisurely. Do ilot fill your mouth too full. Make «s little noise as possible in masticating yonr food.

Eat yonr soup from the side of your spoon, never filling it, lest you spill the soup in conveying it to your mouth

Bread should be broken, not cut. Split a biscuit with your flngera, in stead of opening it with a knife.

If you have a moustache, wipe it with your napkin whenever you drink from your cup.

Do not take game or qjtiisfcfp bones in your fingers* Do not re9t your arms on the table oloth, or leaa far back, or double your self over.

Salt should never be put on tbe table •cloth, but ou the side or your plate. Never help yourself to artioles of food with your knife or fork.

Do not drink with your spoon in your cup. Do not pick your teeth at the table,

Use a fork only in eating pastry, unless your landlady makes very long crust. When asked what part of a fowl you prefer answer promptly, as

YOU

^tbe carver in his embarrassing duties. Do not put a teaspoon of sauce or ice cream into your mouth. .EiUJt partially and eat from the side.

If you have baked potatoes do not put the skins on the tableoloth, but on one side of your plate.

If aside dish is pas red to yon, take it whether you like it or not. Your individual tastes are not supposed of interest to others. Besides it is childish in the extreme.

If you area guest de not mince your food or feign a dainty appetite, as it worries your hostess lest ner fare is not to your liking.

If yon area hostess do not urge yonr guests to eat nor observe that they leave certain dishes nntasted.

It is bad taste for the host and hostess to finish eating before their guests. Pay no attention to accidents or blan ders on the part of servants or others.

The host should never help a plate too abundantly nor Hood a plate with gravy. The hostess should not provide a great variety of disbe*. It is a coarse display, and creates much confaslon in serving.

Put your cheese ou the same plate "with your pastry, and eat it with your fork inntHnd of your fingers.

Do not lfati bark in your chair with a grunt of M&tistactiou when your meal is ended.

Never leave tbe table until all are through, without sufficient excuse Begin to eat slowly as soon as your plate is served.

Keep the plate or dish that is served you, and do not pass It to another. If you eat too muob of the first course, do not deplore your lack of capacity for dessert.

When you have finished your meal lay your Knife and fork on your piate side oy side, with tbe handles towards the right.

Fold your uapkin carefully at your own table, or at the house where you area permanent guest, but crumble it and leave it at the side of your plate where you are taking a single meal.

If you are in attendance upon a formal festal occasiou, where there are likely to be some innovations upon ordinary ail airs, keep your eyes upon those whom yon know to be posted and imitate accordingly, Thus you will never be guilty of drinking from your finger bowl, or other gross violations of etiquette.

HOW OIRL9 HELP I HEMS EL VES.

I Koeklaod Courier,

Jenhle junesaysgirlssbould be tahftht to help themselvei. We sat opposite to a delicate, blue-eyed, splrltuelie creature of sixteen, at the boarding-house table, and saw ber help herself to a plate of soup, a sirloin steak, a chicken's wing and drumstick, two baked potatoes, three plates of corn, two pickles, four hot rolls, a dish of maccaroni, a quarter of a minoe pie, a wedge of appfo padding with sauce and two dishes of vanilla icecream. Thevdo help themselves.

Ladim, Delicate aa4 Fetkle. Those languid, tiresome sensations, causing you to feel sesreely able to be on your feet that constant drain that is taking from your system all its former elasticity driving the bloom from yonr cheeks that continual strain upon your vital forces, rendering you Iritable and fretful, c&n easily be removed by the use of that marvelous remedy, Hop Bitten. Irregularities and obstructions of your system are relieved at once, while the special cause of periodical pain are permanently removed. Will yon heed thU? See'Troths.'*

HEADACHE IN CHILDHOOD.

Children, no less thai) adults, are lia ble to have headaches. To some extent the oauses may be the same, but some causes are peculiar to each. Adults may have headache by way of inheritance. Their blood Is very aspiring,. and tends to fill the head and produce sense of fullness and distress. They may also induce headaohe by gorwan dizlng, by eating heartily by day, and then again by night. Tboy may consume rood that does not easily digest and so disturb the funotions, the peace and quiet of the brain. Such parsons may thank themselves for all the pleas ure headaches may afford. These or other oauses may exist in children. In /ants cannot say that they have a bead ache. Let a mother observe tbe changes that may oocur from day to day on the sweet brow of her infant, and she may soon decide that uneasiness, If not pain exists In tbe soft and tender substance of its brain. It may arise from indiges tion, from inhaling vitiated air, from some disturbance of the food canal. Re lieve it, if you oan, at onoe, lest some serious misohief should ensue. Let the stomach rest. Diminish the amount of food and supply it freely with the fresh outer air,

A ohild of an older growth can speak and show in many ways that its oapitol is ill at ease. Pain in the head of a child often means all it does in its earliest years. It may introduce measles, scarlet fever or other maladies of the growing period of human life. Insufficient mas tication, rapid bolting, and so Imperfect action of the digestive foroes, may be the basis of all the suffering.

Some serious disease may be preceded by headache. A child is restless and irritable. It rejeots its wonted food. It is drowsy, dissatisfied with everything, or is "out of sorts." It complains of headache, or, if it cannot speak in words, it does in other ways, by crying as if in distress, by placing its tiny hand upon burrowing its head into its

its brow, by pillow or its mother's Tap, by wishing to move often from its maternal arms to its comfortable oot and then back again, trying to find some relief, and yet finding none. Observe that often, notalwsys, its head is hot, but that also it assumes some unusual posture, kioklng off its clothing or the clothing of its bed. It tnfns instinctively from the light. A frown is painted on its brow. A mother should fully reslise that these signs of illness portend the coming of some serl ous disease. If neglected, other indications will soon sppear, that will ineyitably rouse her fears, when the golden period of doing something to relieve the child is nearly passed. Great oaks from little acorns grow, and sofffatal maladies from the mildest ones may fiow. Let the mother send for the physician at an early moment. He may only order simple aperient, along soaking of the feet, and the application of a compress, thin and light, well wet with rum and water, or vinegar and water upon the head. This process may relieve the child. But still an intelligent physioian should twice a day visit the child, until it is well confirmed in health.

In later childhood, headache often oo curs. If a healthy youth, on rising in the morning, complains of a headache, its cause may be a poorly ventilated bedroom, a hearty supper on the evening previous, or an excessive application of tbe mind to tbe pressing studies of the school room. Bad air, injudicious feeding and excessive mental toll, day after day, are enough to reader feeble and exhaust an ohild of any age.

Youth, growing and acquiring form and strength, needs airy bed rooms, well ventilated school rooms, nutritious food, well cooked and rendereid easily digested.

In tbe headaches of childhood ssoer tain, if vou can, whether tbe child has had a fall or received a blow upon its bead. You may not reach any satisfactory results. Servants are not always trustworthy,{ and do not hesitate to favor their reputation. Tbe child may be too young to tell the truth, or may fear some punishment for disobedience. A boy was ordered not to visit his father's barn, but he went upon a loft, slipped down upon the floor, received a severe blow'npon his head without brnising it. In a day or two he had headache, and then congestion of the brain, of which he died. He denied to tbe very last, before he becanie comatose or insensible, that he had fallen or received a blow.

Ambitious youth, of good abilities and studious habits, are apt to complain of headache, a weariness and dullness, that should be at onoe regarded. It is usually oongestive headache, hereafter to be described. Many girls are so ambitious to excel, or hsve so strong a thirst for knowledge, that they devote all their days, ana nearly all the best hours of their nights, to the culture of their minds, and filling them with knowledge. Usually such girls hfeve, ultimately, feeile, weakly frames. They lose the power of using the ricbes they have acquired, aud become inefficient members of society.

The headaches that youths of studious habits have, may ordinarily be relieved by proper food, reghlar and daily action of the long canal, iy walking, running, and other exercises in the open air, by lessening the hours of mental toil, and 'afew hours of cheerfulness and fun. oderate (lancing bas no equal in promoting cheerfulness and a proper circulation of the blood. Music and corresponding exercises may prevent or cure what medicine never baa tbe grace or gift to do, The young are naturally full of joy and fun. The kids, lambs and kittens are joyful. Sadness is unnatnral to the young. No girl should have an evening lesson if she devotes the hours of day to mental toil and culture. Tbe brain must rest. Studying in the evening unfits for mental rest and repels 'nature's sweet restorer, balmy sleep.'

We cannot close without advising all mothers to wstch the fontanels of their infabts—those spots upon the surface of tbe head that are soft and yielding. They are sometimes convex and at other times concave. The one means that the brain is too full of blood, and should be relieved by keeping the head oool, soaking the feet and lessening the amount of food, and keeping well the waste canal., Tbe other means that tbe child bas not blood enough, and so should have those means of increasing the vital fluid that will increase its vigor and vitality, such rich food, fresh air and proper exer-
