HOUSEHOLD HblLPO.

It is not mere &i*e that makes the oys ters desirable. Some very large onea are flabby and watery, and make poor eat log.

Housekeepers may be glad to know that a tablespoon!ul of atuinonla in one gallon of warm water will restore the color of carpets.

After sealskin bas been exposed to rain or snow it should bo well shaken and spread to dry In a room where there is no artificial heat.

Apiece of rag soaked in a solution of cayenne is a capital fhiu£ to pat into rat or mouse hole. Rodents will not at tempt to eat it.

Common table salt and carbonate of soda area valuable remedy in casee of diphtheria, these substances always act ing rapidly on the diphtheric membrane

High pillows aro objectionable as pro ducing round shoulders aud crookedness. The bead should never bo uiore than three inches higher than

To remove glass stoppers when tightly fixed, hold the neck of the bottle about half an inch above the flame of the candle or lamp, turning it rapidly so as to bring all parts of the neck equally under the influence of the beat, when it will be rapidly expanded, and the stopper may be withdrawn by a steady pull and a twist. When the bottle contains inflammable liquids care must be taken not to lire the contents.

Hot alum water is the best insect destroyer known. Put the alum into hot water end let it boil till it is ell dissolved then apply tho solution hot with a brush to all cracks, closets, bedsteads, and other places, where any insects are found. Ants, bedbugs, cockroaches, and creeping things are killed by it while it has no danger of poisoning the family or injuring property'.—Boston Journal of Chemistry.

Always clean the teeth at night, just before retiring. Scrub the teeth with a hard brush, using little, if any soap sprinkle on a very little pulverized borax until the gums are hardened and become accustomed to the use of borax, rinse the mouth often with borax water it prevents it from becoming sore or tender. If artificial teeth are worn, cleanse them thoroughly with borax, and when convenient, let them remain in borax water all night it will purify them and help to sweeten the breath.

A warm and dry atmosphere is not unwholesome, but when cloudy and rainy weather brings a sultry air which dampens everything around us the atmosphere may be loaded with the germs of disease, and fire is needed to destroy them. The walls, the ceilings and the floors of apartments should never be allowed to become damp. Sometimes, when the warmth of the air is oppressive Are is more necessary to preserve health than it is at another season to protect us from tho cold of winter and the rooms of a dwelling should never be loft without the means of warming aud drying. Investigations have shown that many of the most fatal diseases aro caused by the germs of vegetable and animal life, and that a humid atmosphere is most favorable for their propagation.

POTATO CAKES—Take potatoes—mashed ones are best, but boiled ones can be mashed—immediately after dinner, before getting too cold add about an equal amount or flour and a small piece of butter or lard rub thoroughly together, roll out and cut as for biscuit—not too thick—and bake in a rather quick ovon. When done to a light brown, cut open, butter and eat warm.

ROASTING PORK,—A small incision Is made in the meat, and stuffed with a little chopped onion, seasoned with sage, pepper and salt. Pork should always be thoroughly cooked. The fat should be removed from the brown gravy, a little water added, but no flour boiled, and sent to table in a gravy dish. Ap pie sauce, onion sauce, and fresh boiled potatoes, aro the necessary accompani ments. lioii.KD TURKEY

The Parisian method of cleaning black silk is to brush and wipe it thor ougbly, lay it on a flat table, with the side up which in intended to show, aud sponge it with hot coffee strained through muslin. Allow it to become partially dry, then iron on the wrong side.

When you dish it ponr on a little oyster sauee lay the balls around the turkey servo the rest of the sauce in a boat. Let the turkey be put on in time to stew as above, it cooks it to perfection. The turkey should be put ou tuo Ore aud heated before it is served.

1) Faith Rochester in the Amerioan Agri culuirlaU WARM XTXDRKCLOTH1C8 FOR CHILDHIMI

The cool days that come now, more and more wintry in their suggestions, set mothers to thinking abont the wiuter clothing of the family. Let no thoughtlessness or negligence hinder the prepa ration of warm undergarments, especialiron. We used to think ly for the children that little boys had much the ad vantage of little girls, in having warmer and more equal elotblng over their whole bodies. But the fashiou of short trousers leaves their legs below the knees no better protectod than those of little girls —unless, indeed, they are more likely to be provided with long nnderdrawers Many fashionably dressed little boys are not so provided for. Through Ignonorance or indifference, their mothers sacrifice future health and manly beauty to present prettiuera, and in this unrea souable and unkind manner, the ma jority of little girls are treated. No one can tell bow much this has to do with the general ill health of women. The children are supp*sed to be growing "tough," but it is often the case that the vitality is too muoh drawn upon and the oonstitutiou gradually undermined, so that many children who seem to be enduring all things wouderfully, are really among those who "die iu the toughening," though the death is long postponed and approaches gradually at last. Make the undegarments of flannel or fleecy cotton flaunel, and let them cover the body from neck to wiists and ankles. They may be made all in one piece, or in two pieces, as preferred. For young children it is often more conven lent to have the lower garments made separate from the upper, and buttoned to them, But the whole garment is easiest made and managed for most children, much like tne long night drawers. The legs should gore down to the ankles inside the stockings by both an inner and outer seam. The one on the inside of the ltg should be left open a few Inches to lap over smoothly undor the stocking. It should always reach down iuside the sljoe top. After this garment has been put on the child, there comes next a stout waist with buttons around the bottom, to which are attached the dress drawers (whether of white cotton or of colored flannel) and the petticoat The latter may be basted strongly to the waist for the reason, if both are colored, seldom needing washing. To the side buttons of this waist (under the arms) are buttoned the stocking supporters or garters, either those patented and bought at the shops, or home made garters—strips of elastic tape with button holes in the wide cloth binding at each end. One end of this garter buttons at the waist, the other fastens on a button npon the side of the stoking outside the leg. Then comes the dress. If all button behind, you can dress and undress the child very quickly after the shoes and stockings are taken off. Unbutton all of the garments behind, and slip them all off together, and replace the set of day garments by a warm well aired night gown, We mostly use soft thick factory cloth (or unbleached muslin). and I- suppose other poor folks do the same, but flannel for winter is to be preferred, especially for little ones apt to get uncovered in bed. During the night the set of day garments may be placed so as to be well aired in the in side, without separating them, and in the morning the child can slip them on all together with ease. Perhaps I have told ail this before, but I see more and more how little is known or thought by mothers, about the healthful dressing of children in cold weather, and I hardly think I need apologize for returning to the subject.

SUNNY ROOM8.

I told a neighbor, lately, that the chief objection I had to a bouse under consid eration as our future residence, was that feared the sun would not shine into the rooms enough to Bait me. She laughed as though tl.at was anew idea to her, and quite whimsical. The blinds on the house were not objectional, as I should leave them wide open, except on rare occasions. But the wide verandahs on the east and south wides, would totally exclude the friendly sunbeams from the common sitting room. Even in summer should not like that, as there are many days when sunshine is far better than a fire. My neighbor said that it always made her feel nervous to have the sun shine directly into her rooms. Now sunshine is one of the best remedies for nervousness, but I understood my neighbor to mean that the prying sunshine searching out every speck of dust or tiny cobweb before concealed by habitual shade, made her feel uneasy. Moreover, the colors of the carpet must be preserved, and sunshine fades them. And so my neighbor pays the doctor for her medicine instead of taking St as a free gift-from Heaven in the bright sunshine and pure air—tor I think she dreads air as muoh as sunshine, except wbeu she goes ont doors occassional ly to get them. I like a broad piazza or geuerous porches about my house, but I want my windows free from even too much curtain. Unless in hot weather, when almost anything ails you, and you feel disinclined to out door exercise, the best thing you can do is to sit down in the broad smile of a sunny window and let the sunbeams put new lile into you. If your feet are oold, the sun will warm them more thoroughly and permanently than a fire, especially'if you take off your shoes and put your feet on a stool or chair in the full sunshine. For neuralgia I know nothing Letter, in connection with fasting from one or two meals, than to lie in the full sunshine, all but the top of your head, which may be protected cover up warm if the room is cold, bqt let everything about your body be loose and well aired.

BRKAD PANCAKES.

For those who have milk, a convenient way to use up old bread is, to make it into pancakes. This is a good way to use soar bread also, as a trine mote soda than the sour milk requires to neutralise it will sweeten th9 sour bread too. Soak the bread crumbs (a quart or less), for a few hours in a* little sweet milk as will answer. Tfcen mash them with a four tined fork, or otherwise reduce them to an even consistence. Add a teacupful of sour milk, a half teaspoonfal of soda dissolved in tepid water, and flour enough to make a batter just right to bake the cakes light without being too thick and hard. Try a little on your hot battered griddle If you are in doubt about it. Eggs are not necessary to make light, good, wholesome pancakes of this kind, Dot when not loo experi*

aiv«», they add greatly to their delicacy and goodness. Two, three or four eggs, aa yon can spare them.

Be Ym Like raallik.

"For ten years my wile wa» confined to ber bed with such a complication of ailments that no doctor oould tell what was the matter or cure ber, and I used ap a small fortune in humbug stuff. SHx months ago I saw a U. S. flag with Hop Bitten on It, and I thought I would be a fool once more. I tried It, bat my tolly proved to be wisdom. Two bottles cured ber, and she is now as well and strong as any man's wife, and it only cost me two dollars. Be ye like foolish."—H. W., Detroit, Micb.
