THOMAS E. LAWKS, of the Vandalia railroad ahops, and Miss Jennie Lee, of Charleston, Illinois, were married at the bride's home on Tuesday. The event was the oocasion of two surprises. At Charleston the guests had been invited to come at eight o'clock to celebrate the birthday anniversary of the bride's mother. The visitors were surprised to find the daughter had been married an hour before. On coming to this city the pair proceeded to Mr. Lawes' houae on Center avenue, near the railroad, and they in turn were surprised to find the house brilliantly lighted, the rooms full of friends, and a fine supper in readiness. Prof. Owen's orohestra was there, and it is needless to add that a pleasant time was bad. „,/!

Joseph K. Emmet came Monday evening, and had a maguificent audlenoe. His "New Frits" waa announced as an improvement on the old Frits. We have forgotten the old play, bat if the new one la an improvement, the old one must hsve been wretched. It does seem strange that an actor of Mr. Emmet's sbllity and resources cannot gets dramatist to build him a play, on which he oan string his speclaltlea, that has some semblaneeof plot. The play of the "New Frits" is the merest bosh, disconnected in plot and improbable In atory. However, these features are lost to aigbt to the average auditor as he listens to Mr, Emmet's inimitable sketches, bis sweet sougs, his remarkable inatrumentaiiam, and witnesses bis very poetry of motion, as be goes about the stage or takes a few steps ip the danoe.
On Wednesday evening Miss Effle Ellsler made her first appearance to a Terre Haute audlenoe, in the drama of a "Heroine in Rags." She is of the Lotts and Maggie Mitobell school, and in some respects is superior to those famed artistes. Petite in figure, sprightly as a cricket, graceful in motion, a vocalist of more thsn ordinary ability, with a pretty faoe and modest meln, she jumped right into the good graoesof her audience, and at any time ahe may return oan rely on a generous weloome. Her support wss excellent, far above the average companies that visit this city. Owing to the many oounter attractions on Thursday evening, the audience was small when she gave her rendition of "The Grasshopper," the play In which Lotta is having such success in the east.
As we go to press the people are gathering from all parts of the city for the Humpty Dumpty matinee. This is given by the Tony Denier pantomine troupe, in all respects the most worthy combination of the kind ont this season. Aside from the story of Humpty Dumpty, there is an interesting and varied entertainment by a corps ef specialty performers. Those who have not secured seats should go early to-nlgbt, as a mon' *r audience will surely assemble. sa*r Troy, N.
Y.,
On Wednesday evening Mme Rente's Female Minstrels—the best and least objectionable of its class—will appear at the Opera House. »We are assured that this Is a "straight variety show," with none of the can-can and similar features. It was upon this assurance, also, that the Opera House was secured by the manager. The Newport News has this to say:
MME. RENTZ'SMUJSTRELS—This popular organization appeared at the Opera House last night to the largest audience of the season. The performance was a meritorious one. and save universal satisfaction. Gilbert ana Henshaw are very funny comedians, and were recalled again and again. Florrie Plimsoll's changes were really wonderful and were well received. Sallie Adams does an excellent musical act, and Is a very attractive lady. Rosa Lee and Lulu Mortlmore in their operatic duetts displayed remarkably cultivated voiceB. McDermott Sisters did some clever dancing, and Miss Hattie Forrest looked and sang charmingly. The burlesque was the best given here In many years, and was received with great favor. This company are always sure of liberal patronage whenever tbey visit Newport.
On Thanksgiving afternoon and evening we are to have a rare dramatic feast, one appropriate to the day. People go to the Opera House either to be Instructed or amused. When two-thirds of a play Is amusement and the balance presents matters for mora 11

Whig:
Tony Denier's Humpty Dumpty, at the Opera House, Saturday afternoon end evening, was a most enjoyable entertainment. Since Fox left the stage, the publio have doubted whether a worthy successor oould be found. There need be no further doubt Grimaldl is greater than Fox. Almost every actor Is a specialist. Grimaldl is a remarkably good acrobat. The beautiful Miss Boshell, as modest as she Is beautiful, the most sprightly and engaging Columbine we have ever seen. The power of Grimaldi tooonvey his thoughts by facial expression is almost beyond comprehension, so perfect is his mastery of the facial muscles. His acting was natural and irresistible.
On Monday evening the famons agitator and the champion of human rights, Wendell Phillips, will deliver at the Opera House, his lecture on Woman, Labor and Temperance," three most interesting themes. He comes under the auspioes of the Occidental Literary Club. For many years Mr. Phillips has occupied so prominent a position in politics and upon the lecture platform, that it seems unnecessary to say more than announce his coming. Seats can now be secured at the Central Bookstore. ^4^1
Ring about the
frailties, shortcomings and idiosyncrades of humanity, an audience retires with the oomfortabie feeling that their time and money has been well spent. Just such an impression will Graver's 'Our Boarding House," create with those who witness that play on Thanksgiving afternoon. The St. Louis Times, speaking of it, says:
Mr. Leonard Graver's very successful comedy, which was so well received here last season, was greeted with at least equal approbation at the Olympic Theatre last night. The house was well filled and the demonstrations of applause and laughter were abundant. The corned well deserves tbe sucoese it has met with an it is a genuine American comedy, filled with characters that grow onlv on our side, and with scenee that oould not occur elsewhere. One or more of the types described In "Our Boarding House" may be visible in all Urge cities, and it is easy enough to pick up lq various parts of tbe country an "Elevator," a "Shooter," a "Gillypod," or an "Eligible," but the mass oould hardly be agglomerated outside of tbe great city of extensive enterprises. "Our Boarding House" must be ranked as a first class comedy, for its life Is in its character portraits. As the comedy is brought to os this year, It is calculated to win even a fuller success than it had last season, as tbe company which has been formed to
play it Is in some respects stronger, snd, as a whole, more harmonious. It is not yet known whether "Our Boarding House" will be repeated In tbe evening, or the play of "H. R. H." given.
Buffalo Bill will not be here next Saturday, as he has for some time been booked. He will be at Manchester, New Hampshire, on that date, and we presume will be here later In the season.
Nothing booked at the Opera Houae for week after next. Jnlia Hanebett is to be In tbe oompany supporting Lotta this season. According to the published route the troupe will be here Feb. 12tb.
D. Hanohett, formerly of this city, has reconstructed "Tbe Tramp." which was produced In this city tbe first of the season, under tbe title of "Bed Rock," and is producing it In the southern part of the state. Mr. Hanohett pjays tbe leading part. He will be here some time during the season.

Kate Claxton is oredited 'filth the remark that "many women are prettier off the stage than on It." This does not apply to herself, as ber comeliness is equal in both,
P. T. Barnnm writes a card to say that be never saw a pedestrian oontest,, a boxing matob, a boat race, a cook fight or a game of base ball. He has witnessed two horse races, both in England. Perhaps P. T. hadn't the time to spare from his own great moral shows.
A writer in the Philadelphia Mirror saysi I am really beginning to believe that these leg-y and bust-y cards in the shop windows are more dangerous than were the Wild Oats and Days' Doings newspapers, which the authorities thought well to stop. A little while ago there were two female minstrel troupes at the same time in St. Louis, and the Post of that city remarks that their managers "bad numerous applications from attractive young ladies" who wanted to join them, Imagine the sort of girl whose noblest ambition is to go upon a three sheet poster in pink tights, and in tbe evening sing vulgar songs and talk slang to an audience of bald beaded men. I claim it is tbe posters and the Rosalind, Mazeppa and seriocomic photographs more than the shows themselves which work the harm and make store girls and seamstresses dream of a career of spangles. They are everywhere, before the eyes of people who never enter a theatre. And they pretend more than is actually done on tbe stage, just as the low dives were wont to crowd their houses by advertisements of "female bathers," suggestive of something of pose plastique kind, and when the scene was reached it was nothing at all to satisfy the anxious. -Kkg
