Miss Jellaby's Match.

Mi4* Jellaby row at six, on® beautiful August tnornini?, and throwing open her chamber window, sniffed onoe or twice at the fragrance coining up front the roses la the garden b«low. Then she bunted a m-»uient tor ber spectacles upon the bureau, and. putting tbetn on, looked eagerly at Randall CottAgo, over the way. A very modest, pretty little bouse it was, with roses and syrinL growing under each window, ana woodbine and jessamin climbing over tbe donr but Miss Jellaby was not admiring ita beauty just then. She looked up at a front window on the second floor, and gave a vicious snort. •As I expected! Sbe Isn't up yet, and here it is six o'clock! And where is be, I woridei?'

Before she bad time to answer the question as It was asked—mentally—toe front door of tbe cottage opened, and Miss Jellaby, shrinking behind ber curtain, saw a handsome, sunbamed man come out, and go down the garden walk with a cigar iu bis mouth. It was easy to see by tbesligbt roll in bis walk, tbat be had been a sailor, though tor the nutter oi that bis bearing, handsome face, and ank, hearty manner, would have told tbe tale, if he bad never stirred a step. With bis bands in his packets, he sauntered among the roses, behding down now and then, and always removing the cigar from his lips when he did so. 'He couldn't do more if he was speaking to a woman,' said the spinster, ap plying ber eye to a hole left purposely in tbe white curtain. 'The man is mad about (lowers, I do believe, and

she

And her slippers—oh, mercy,

there they go right through the wetwell, there—' Words failed the worthy spinster. Meanwhile the owner of tbe slippers (and very pretty little affairs they were —bronzed laced daintily and rosetted with a spangle that shone like a dew drop)—tripped down the walk, so lightly that tbe gentleman did not "hear her step, and coining upon bim as he bent over a bed of violets, gave bim a push that sent bim on his face among them. To see

ber

laugh—to see bim blunder up

and chase her through the alleys—to see him kiss her when be prisoned her at last in Ins arms—and to see ber protend to

his ears for it—was a sight for a

loving heart to watch—but Miss Jellaby, over opposite, nearly fainted away with horror. She rang ber bell violently, and a square faced, sour looking woman, who ha.i lived with ber for years, made her appearance. ... '8ii9un!' 'TVelV said that amiable domestic, bri«-fly.

Before Miss Jellaby could speak tbe unconscious pair transgressed against propriety again •Walking up and down in broad daylight with bis arm around her waistJust look at ber, Htisau! Do you mean to stand there and tell me that that uian Is only her brother?' 'Dear me, ina'am—how can I tell I only know'that they look alike, and thai tbey have the came name.' ,,, .' 'How-do you know?' &• •Because 1 saw thei.- linen one day at the laundresses, and hers wan marked Helen Graham, and bis Philip Graham. And the servant told the woman that she had always lived with Miss Helen and Master Philip, when they were at their own twine in (England. What more do you want?' 'Susan, you will break my heart yot —I am sure of It! la it possible you knew all this? When did you tlnd it out?' .. •Tuesday.' •And this is Friday. For three whole days you Dave kept me to tbia disgraceful ignorance! Susan. we shall have to pirtr •Good Lord, Miss Jellaby, bow was I to know that I ought to oouae and tell you? said Susan, tartly. Tin sure It's no great news after all is said and dune.' •Huuiph! That we shall see, later on. It's my opinion that some one ought to speak to Mr. Fuilerton.' 'Tbe minister? What for?' 'Are von suoii a fool, Susan, as not to see

What

it means? .Miss Helen and

Ma«t*f Pbiflp, Itideedl I wonder at your swallowing such a story. They are no more brother and slater than you and I are.' •Well, what are tbey, then?' 'That reuiviiii to ,be told—the wretcheta. But Mr. Fuilerton will soon set them to rights, 1 shall go and see him after breakfast. I don't know what the poor man would do without me.' 'Have some p©ac», I suppose,' muttered Susan,_uni«r ber breath, as she followed Miss Jellaby dwwti to the parlor. Husan loved her mistress, and was a faithful servant to her, but she detested scandal of all kinds, aud never could be brought to take that Interest in other, peopled business whtoh waa considered right and proper by the worthy spinster.

Break last being over, Miss Jellaby sauntered forth to tbe parsonage. Tbe good pastor looked up with meek sigh, as that lady entered hi* study.

The clergyman was a quiet, peace loving man, somewhat timid withal, and the spinster alwaya overpowered bltu with her arguments, when sbe attempted to do so. Sue stayed nearly baif an boor with him, and at ll» expiration of that time, people who were ou tbe lookout saw her conveying tb# nnhappy par eon In tbe direction, and, atlas*, through tbe very gate of Randall Cottage.

A tidy looklug old servant admitted them, ushered theiu into a pleasant nursery room, and aald she would go and tell her mistress of their arrival.

Mr. Kullerton Baton tbe edge of hi* chair, very uneasy In his wind, and wishing with all bis heart that be was at home again.

Miw* Jellaby strode npand down tbe room like a dragoon, eyeing everything

about her, and making observation* In an undertone, which, however, be oould not help hearing. 'Such extravagance! Look at that car

Sbe took another turn. 'And a gultai! Spaniards, I don't doubi or Italian* and the rest follows as a matter of course Mr. Fuilerton, I believe these people are heathen*!' 'Hardly, I think, or they would never have couie to church last Sunday." •Ob, you don't know that gverbaps tbey had some private end to gain by it,' said Miss Jellaby.

Tbe spinster's unreasonable suspicions tickled Mr. Fuilerton beyond measure. Sbe saw bim laughing, ^nd grew indignant. •Let those laugh that win, I say, Mr. Fuilerton. I don't doubt you will feel more like cr\ ing before this business is A6ttl6d •Not r,' said the minister, with a rue ful look. •A crucifix, as I am a sinner!' sbe rour mured a moment afterward. 'There, Mr. Fuilerton, w..at did 1 tell you! bang' ing on the wall here in broad daylight. Shall I pull it down?' •Are yon beside yourself, Miss Jella by?' said Mr. Fuilerton, springing up and arresting her band Justin time

The.hOund of voices and laughter in tbe garden prevented ber giving bim what she called 'a piece of ber mind. There was a race up tbe broad path, that sobered into a walk when the young people beared tbe wtado#, followed by the old servant, who bad been iuto the grounds to call them.

They entered tbe room together, both flushed with their frolic, but lot king happy and pleased to rn&et tbe clergy man. 'Sin wears a different face from that,' be said to himself, as he shook bands with them. They turned to tbe spinster, who bad bolstered herself upagainstthe chimney piece, and stood eyeing them with soar disdain.

Yoar neighbor, Miss Jellaby,' Mr. Fuilerton, adding, in a low whisper to ber, as they sought about tbe rootn for ea&y Chairs 'It's all a mistake, my good creature—there's nothing wrong here. I'M have nothing to do with the matter. S*y nothing, and let this pass as a morning call.'

S*y nothing, indeed! Mr. Fuilerton, I am ashamed of you!' was ber reply, too audibly made, however, for Mr. Graham h.eard it^ though he was too courteous to loo£ surprised.

Pray take this easy cbiilr, Miss Jellaby. Can I offer you some wine, Mr. Fuilerton?' said Helen, who wondered inwardly at tbe strange behavior of ber guests. •No, my child,' said tbe clergyman, kindly, *1 will touch nothing during this visit. 8. me other tithe I hope to come again. I can only express my sor row Of having been persuaded against my better judgment to enter these doors on such an absurd errand—and leave yon.' 'My dear fir forgive noe if I say Idonot quite understand exclaimed the captain, while Helen made up ber mind that both her visitors were mad.

I will tell you at another time/sa'd Mr. Fuilerton, nervously. 'I will only 'sny, in explanation of tbisintrusion, that it was caused by a most ridiculous mis lake. Mi98 Jellaby will you allow uieto accompany you bom*?'

Miss Jollabv folded ber arms looked at them all viciously, and thundered out- iff

No!' Is .she mad?' whispered Helen to tbe clergyman. 'What does i* all mean?'

Miss Jellaby beard ber. 'It means this, madam, this, and noth Ing more—that if Mr. Fuilerton is to be ensnared by a pre ty face, and frightened, out of doing bis duty, I am not!' •Was there ever such an unfortunate piece of business? Miss Jellaby I cannot allow you to commit such an act of folly, or to insult these young creatures, so I comrraud you, as your minister, not to speak •I take no orders from a man wbo shrinks from his duty,'said, the spinster lo'tily. 'Mydearsir,? turningtothe captain, it seems I cannot spare you tblsiLfllc tion, so I may as well tell you what this good lady means. She lives opposite yoiij as you already know—' •And she has seen you time and again, when you thought yourselves alone— remember that!' chimed in tbesbarp voice or tbe spinster.

Do to quiet, my dear Miss Jellaby. As she says she has often seen you—' Kiwinjft' exploded from the thin lips.

Miss Jellaby, either yon or I must oe si leu t. From these things sbe has drawn ber own conclusions, aud I am ashamed to s*y that lor a brief pace she persuad ed me Into belieVing tbem.{ I treed not add that from the instant you entered this room my suspicions .vanished, and I would readily stake my life this moment upon your periect integrity.' •Bot, ray dear sir,' said Captain Graham, stniring, 'of what doee the lady suspect us?' 'Tell tbeui, Miss Jellaby. 1 will not' 'Pretty behavior, I aui sure, to leave the jworst part to me, Mr. Fuilerton. However, no one shall say I shrink back from my duty!' •We are waiting to know what heinous erime we have committed,' said Cap taut Graham, drawing tbe bewildered Helen cluee to his side. Miss Jellaby gasped at tbe oareee then it seemed to give ber fresh energy. 'Before toy tery eyea, airl' i, •Whatdoyoii mean?' *1 suppose you will kiss ber next. •Well—now you mention it—I think I will.*

And be did! Mi«i Jeliatgy nearly fainted a war with horror. •Mr. Fuilerton, bow flitn |w» stand there so quietly, and Wateh mis shameless oonuuet AI for you, sir,'she added, taruing to tbe good bnuiored captain, 'you need not think (bat every on$ wiU tolerateyouraudacijfbs—f' 'Take breath, my dear MWw Jellaby.' •It it infamous,' shouted tbe enraged spinster. 'Praps, mister, you'd like to take your hand agin,' said be to tbe other, wbo bad returned in tbe meantime: 'tbey are goin' to sing somesaui tunes up stairs before goin' to bed, and I promised I'd jine 'em.'

There was a blank look of amazement in tbat circle as he left, and tbe thought forced itself into more than one mind of the danger of trusting to appearances.

A SPLENDID WIFE. Burlington Hawkeye.

We once knew a man who was always praising his Wife. On tbe corner, down tbe street, at the postoflloe, at the race course, in tbe-ikating rink, at tbe tbea ter, iu tbe sal—that is, at the choir.meeting, he was always telling what a happy man he was, just because be had sucb a splendid wiie/and be talked every mah be met into a perfect frenzy of envy a-'out ber. V^ell, one winter morning when it waa Hot yet too light to make one appear ^overly ostentatious, we sneaked into that neighbor's yard to steal a fence board lor Undlimftwa^lpd to wait until that man's wife came out and sawed a couple of armfuls of wood, shoveled out three anow paths, fed and groomed tbe horse and cleaned out the cow sbed, and then when »be went into tbe bouse and we beard ber call to ber husband tbat the sitting room was warm enough for him to dress in ir be wanted to get up, we were so amased that we forgot what we were wailing for, and went back and kindled tbe fire with a corn cob and a pint of kerosene.

A Nnddeti Death.

There la something terrible in tbe thought of haying our friends stricken down at our side, without a parting word of endearment or consolationone moment at our side in the flnsb ol vigorous life, cheering our hearts wltb their loving sympathy the next at our feet, pale wltli death, deaf to our cries and heedless ol our tears. He was looking "around the bouse" next, and steppeaiu where some of the boys were playing curds—something of where they were talking of 'Msalls" and "rising" and "seeing."

Tbe oo.vs looked a little disconcerted, but the old man didn'taay anything till the hand was played out, and one or the party, under pretense of having an engagement, winked at the others and said he must go, intendiog to break up until after the old man bad gone, and then resume tbe game.
