A PAPER FOR THE PEOPLE.

..... '®e«au8e!

V. 3 ., ,r .*» THE SATURDAY EVENING MAIL la good mediam of oommunlcaU*n between

Terre Han te busloem men and ihe peopl who buy their good*- -t,H^ Bocaose, It has the largest circulation of any paper published In this city. Bat not K' on this account alone, but—

Because, It goes into the family circle on Saturday evening, and during Saturday night and Sunday is read thoroughly advertisements and all, by every member of the family who can read, after which It

Is loaned to the neighbors. Because, After having been read by the borrowers and buj era In the city, It Is en veloped, stamped and sent to some friend oi relative in some other town or city. Because, It Is a paper whleh reaches all classes, high and low, rich and poor. Because, Of its very large circulation among farmers. Bf cause, It Is an espoclal favorite with the ladles, who do a large part of the buying of household good*, 1b addition to thejew elry and dress goods they wear, and are critical readers of advertisements.

Because, Two editions are published, Thurs day at Satmday evenings, anc all ad vertlsemenU go in both editions for price of one Issue. Becailso, Its rates are cheaper, all things considered, than those of any other paper in tbeclty.

THE Knights of Father Mathew have taksn a five years' lease on Corinthian Hall, and will fit it up handsomely for a lodge room.

THE Mayor, city council and city officials went to Chicago Wednesday evening. Our city officials delight to travel. They will return to morrow night.

REPUBLICANS aud Nationals can find consolation in defeat over the fact that the Democrats have elected a set of county officials much above the average for honesty, integrity, and ability to fill the several offices.

THE publication of the Daily Repub lican ceased on Saturday last. We are sorry for Mr. Brown, that he eould not make it pay, bnt it cannot be denied that this city has more newspapers than the oommunity can well support.

THE Terre Haute Cornet Band, with its new additions of instruments and instrumentalists now plays exceedingly well. Prof. Toute's strikes the lyre, one of the new inslraments, in a man ner as to add much to the charming music. The band was out serenading a few places last night. It is much more pleasant to be awakened by such music than that of a crying baby. Thanks, gentlemen for a couple of slices.

THE election in this county was a perfect land slide In favor of the Democrats. Wo have not space for the big table of figures already published in the daily papers. The strength of the three parties is perhaps best known by the vote oast for Secretary of State, which was Democratic 3,240 National 2,920 Repub lican 2,424. Every candidate on the Democratic ticket was elected. The names of the new officers are given in another plaoe. Judge Patterson is re eleoted Judge of the Circuit Court, and John T. Hays, Independent, proeecutor of the same oourt.

All who need Dr. von Mosebslsker's medloal services should not delay, but call on him at once. The deaf, those who suffer from impaired, sight, throat lung, chest diseases, and from that most horrible of all diseases, catarrh, will not have another such opportunity to be treated by one who is acknowledged the most skillful and most experienced of specialists and phyaicians In the treat ment of that disease and in all the above named maladies. Over one hun dred of the most responsible citizens have already* testified that they have been cured by him, and the most reliable references can be examined at his offices in the Terre Haute House.

PETERSON'S MAGAZINE, the cheapest and best of the Lady's Books, is on our table for November. The principal steel engraving, "For Mother's Fire," is rarely beautiful. So, also, is the mammoth colored steel fashion plate. But, as ootemporary says, the stories, the fashions, the patterns, in short, everything in "Peterson" is the best of its kind. For 1879 a monthly supplement will be given, containing a full-sized paper pat tern for a lady's, or child's dress, thus giving to every subscriber twelve such patterns, extra, during the year. These patterns alone will be worth the sub scription price. Five original copyright novelets will also be given, besides a hundred shorter stories. Among the novelets will be one by that celebrated author, Frances Hodgson Burnett, and another by the author of "Josiah Alleu's Wife." The price of tbis Lady's Book is but two dollars a year, the postage pre-paid by the publisher. To clubs the prices are greatly reduced for 1879, viz: wo copies for |3.50, with a superb Mezzotint (24 inches by 20), Christ Blessing Little Chrildren," the finest and costliest ever offered, to the person getting~up the club or four copies for $6.50, and an extra copy to thn person getting up the club. For$9 00six copies will be sent, and an extra copy for getting up the club. Never were such terms offered before! Specimens of the Magazine are sent gratis, if written for, to those wishing to get up clubs. Subscribe to nothing else until you have seen a copy of tbis popular Magazine. Address Charles

THIS day a week, a surprise party gathered at the residence of Mr. Eppingbousen, on north Eighth street, to oongratulate him on bis birthday.

The party consisted of ladies and gentlemen representing the talent of Terre Haute in every department of soienoe, music and literature.

No one is more deserving and is better able to appreciate not only the good gifts that the gods give us, but tbe good gifts that God gives to men.

Mr. Eppinghousen is a hpst who knows how to make bis guests feel that they are welcome, as does also his good wife and their brilliant little daughter, Cecelia, who shows in the bud to what a flower sbe will grow.

Among those present were Miss Flora Sage, one of our most brilliant pianists, Miss May McEwan, one of our lavorites in song, Mrs. M. I. Walters. President of one of our literary societies, Professor Zerkowsky, tbe master of tbe violin, August Hoberg, the flute soloist. R. M. S:erret, the composer, and last, but not least, Dr. Von Mochzisker. Judging from theee names, one can imagine what an exquisite soiree musical was rendered since the most happy spirit prevailed evenit throughout the ing till midnight, it being nearly morning when the party reluctantly, and with the most pleasant and delightful impressions, repaired to their respective homes.

Tbe Methodist General Conference which has just closed its session in Montreal took decisive action as to attendance on class meetings. Many of tbe brethren have grown careless as to this dnty, and in most churches class meetings are neglected. An effort was made to abolish the old law which made attendance on these meetings a test of church membership. This signally failed, however, and It is as muob tbe duty of Canadian Methodists as it ever was to go to them. It is unfashionable, however. Both here and in Canada thousands of persons who are otherwise good and faithful Methodists live in almost oonstant neglect of this duty. It is safe to say that if tbe olass leaders would make their class meetings more interesting than they do tbe attendanoe would be larger. The olaas meeting bas not kept up with the progress of tbe age. It Is too often a rehash of old experience, the same experience being given almost verbatim from time to time. It is not surprising that such an institution does not inspire the younger members of tbe churches with enthusiastic ardor to join In ita privilege*. Most of tbe people who attend are thoee who are past middle life, who have been for many years in the babitof attending, and go principally from habit, *•.*
