ARCHERY.
Wkai JDr. Carver toy* of the use of the Mow and Arrow. From Forest and Stream.
You see," said Dr. Carver, as he deposited a whole sheaf of brightly feath ©red arrows od the table, took off bis umbrageous felt, and drew op a chair,
I must be shooting something or other all the time. If it isn't a Winchester it's a bow and arrow. Pretty, they are. But most too floe. Fancy things, these arrows, for baudsome young ladies to shoot on grass plats at straw targets. Now an Indian arrow is a good bit longer maybe thirty-two Inches—and wbeu a Hioux draws ft chock up to the bowit faiily hams when be lets it fly.

Al* INDIAN ARROW
Has grooves cot In it behind the barb, that is to say the ones they use in banting, so that the blood can flow, otherwise the wood would spoil and swell. The fighting arrows are nasty things. The barb is to put on the fehaft so that when it bits jou the steel, or old hoop iron, stays in the flesh when you goto poll out the arrow. Dear saxes! whit ugly wounds I have seen them make. An Indian boy begins to handle alight bow when he toddles, mapbe four or five years. His bow is taller than he is. He sboots at almost anything around the camp. When be is twelve he uses sharp arrows. A boy must be strong at eighteen to use a man's bow. Now, a white man who takes an Indian bow for the first time bos all he can do to bend it. It wants some strength bat more knack. The bow is made straight. When it is strung, the cord, even when in tenson, almost touches the bow. It is thick—some four and a half to five feet long, that is their hunting bow—and has extra stiffening by having sinews pasted on it. I have seen We-sbessa-hen-ka, that's the long man, and he was tbe best of the Ogala Sioux, kill au antelope with bis arrow at 125 yardn. We-sbeasa-has-ka was nearly seven feet tall and a good Indian. On horsebacjc, broadside to a buffalo, I have more than once known tbat Indian to
SJESD A It ROW THROUGH A BIO COW.
Ttio arrow bung out on the othor side. The bow for horseback and for war is a trifle shorter and maybe stiffer. You do not draw the arrow to the eye, but catch aim as Id" when shooting from the hip. That can on'.y be acquired by long practice. The
Htring
is drawn by the clutch
of tbe whole fingers, though some of tbe tribes use tbe thumb ana three tingors. The long man could shoot an arrow in the air out of sight, and so can I (the doctor pointed to an arrow buried up to tbe feather iu the ceiling of our office, bis own peculiar ornamentation of tbe "Forest and Stream" sanctum). I think tbat iu a oouple ol uiontlia I could get into perfect practice, for I used to hold my own with any Indian on the plains. Sometimes after I bad leen shooting with m.y Winchester, an Indian would oome up and show bis bow. and tell me his bow was 'muchee good but then I used to take his own bow and beat him at it.
To paj»s aw»y the time when I wa« at the Brooklyn driving park, I bought me
AN EXOMSH BOW AND ARROWS
of Holborton, and soon got into the trick o! it. I hit blocks of wood thrown into the air quite as often as I missed
tbom. The English bow and arrows are
fancy, but good. I would rather have
an old Sioux one, made of hickory or ash, but tbe boss bow I ever owned was made of buffalo ribs. An Indian carries bis quiver of arrows over bisrlghtshoul* der, mo that he can get his arrows quick ]y. When he has discharged one arrow (the doctor pronounces arrow with a single letter he calls it an R)with the same unction as be uses in pulling the string he clutcbOB another arrow. If he shoots

Ho left an incoherent statement of bis acoounts also a few lines to the cflfect tbat be Intended to take bis life. At the close was this seuteuor: "TpU my wife to go to b—11." Between the leaves of tbe aooount book was found a photograph of his wife, with the eyes and mouth blackened with a lead pencil, and the word "Cain" written on the forehead. Underneath the picture were the words: "The meaueet woman God ever made."

yards be has three or four ar
rows in the air, all going at the same time. It's great fun shooting at a bird with long tail that files over tbe prairie. Knock out bis tall ana his steering apparatus is gone. 1 have knocked the tail out of many a one, and so caught him In my hands when be tumbled. See here. Talking about tbeso things just makes me long to be back again on the plains. Now York is a mlghtv good place, and I have made lots of friends but somehow I want a horse, and a big field, with miles on miles before me to gallop over, and buffalo j«»t a showing on the divide." And here Dr. Carver shut lits eyes and seemed lost for awhile iu the visions of rolling prairit iu .the far-off western wildernesa.

EARTH'S LONE CHILDREN.
We Want a Grave Board for Ma."
From the Detroit Free Press. ••••&& A boy, not over 11 years old, whose pinched face betrayed hunger, and whose clothing could scarcely be called by the name, dropped into a carpenter shop on Grand River avenue the other day, and after much hesitation explained to the foreman:
We want to get a grave-board for ma. She died last winter, and the graves are so thick that we can't hardly Bud bers no more. We went up last Sunday, and we come awful near not finding it. We thought we'd git a graveboard, so we wouldn't lose the grave. When we thought we'd lost it, Jack he cried, and Bud sho cried, and my chin tremuled so I could hardly talk 1"
Where is your latherf* asked the carpenter. Ob, he's home, but be never goes np there with us, and we shan't tell him about the board. I guess be hated ma. for be wasn't home wbon she died, and he wouldn't buy no coffin nor nothing. Sometiuios, when we are sittin' on the door-step talking about her. and Jack and Budd are cryln', and I'm remember! n' how she kissed us all afore she died, be says we'd better «uit that, or we'll get what's bad for us. But we sleep up stairs, and we talk and cry in the dark all we want to. How much will the board be?"
Tbe carpenter selected something fit for tbe purpose, and asked: Who will put it up at the grave?"
We'll take it up on our cart" replied the boy, "and 1 guess the graveyard man will help us put it up." "You want tbe name painted on, don you ••Yes, sir, we want the board white, and then we want you to paint on tbat she was our ma, and that she was fortyone years old, and that she died the £d of November, and thst she's gone to Heaven, and that she was one of the beat mothers ever was, and that we are going to be good all our lives and go up where she Is when we die. How much will it cost, sir "How mhch have you got!" "Well," said the boy, aa he brought out a little calico bag and emptied ita contents on the bench, "Bud drawed the baby for the woman next door and earned twenty cents Jack he weeded In the garden and earned forty cents, and he found five more in tbe road: I run of erranda and made kites and fixed a boy's cart and helped carry some apples into a store, and I earned aixtv ive oents. All that makes a bund rod and thirty cents, sir, and pa don't know we've got it, cause we kept it hid In the ground nnder a stone."
The carpenter meant to be liberal, bat a a "A grave board will coat at least three dollars."
Tbe lad looked from his little atore of metals to the carpenter and back, realised how many weary weeks had passed since the first penny waa earned and saved, and suddenly wailed out: "Then we cant never, nevor bay one, and ma's grave will get leek"
But he left the shop with tears of gladnesa In his eyes, and when he returned yesterday little Bad and Jack were with him, and they had a cart. There waa not only a head-board, but one for tbe foot of the grave aa well, and painter and carpenter bad done their work with foil heart*, and done it *#11. "Ain't it awful nice—nicer than rich folk have I" whtsbered the children, aa the boards were being plaoed on the oart ''wont the grave look nice, though, and won't ma be awful glad!"
Ere this the mother's grave baa been marked, and when night cornea the three motherless ones will cuddle close together and whisper tbeir gratitude that It cannot be lost to them, even in the atoraQS and drifts of winter.
"Howabout the phonograph, dear?" queried tbe wife "you have never explained it to me. How doea it work
He routed himself and answered: "It's a little machine tbat tbe buaband leaves on the table while be to down town, and on hia return he turna a crank, and it Informs him of everything that has been said on the premlaea during his absence."
She meditated for a moment, and then broke out: ••The fool men are always getting up some peaky Invention, and if yon bring one of them things Into the house, I'll leave."
