oiara Francis in Prairie Farmer. Now Is the summer of our discontent! The wearisome condition of frizzling and broiling beneath tbe torrid sun of this temperate zone, brines envious bat vain longings for tbe lot of dwellers in cool Icelandic halls, ah" fraction of their composure and utoi cism. If even the latter were vouch' safed, then we might walk serenely in allotted paths. regardless of tbe per

Tbe deep buzz of tbe blue bottle and tbe silent nippings of his smaller relatives would be matters of supreme indifference to such philosophic souls tarnished brass and clouded tin would fall to move them wavin cobwebs might beckon in vain am specked window glass and dimmed mirrors await a more convenient season.

After tbe household battle for cleanliness and comfort has been fought and peace has been declared, one might reasonably expect a cessation of hostilities. Though the demon of dust has been exorcised, and tbe honse is guiltless of speck or flaw, rest and happiness are fleeting joys, and comfort a vain delusion for, with advancing Bummer conies more dust and specks, and a host of cares and annoyances that are not incident to cooler weather. Strength and patience are taxed to tbe utmost during long hot summer days. Even those who are usually strong, will be apt to experience an unwonted sense of languor, while the weaker sisters grow nervous and fretful in proportion as they grow tired.

Most vocations bring with them variety, recreation and new associations woman's daily life, bounded by tbe walls other home, is filled with osres and small annoyances and dlsthat though they may Hei.m trl.Ul to others, are wearying and worrying to the housewife.

With many, tbe day begins at four o'clock, and the whole of It is speht iu work. What wonder that after long hours of planning aud performing, bedtime should And them "so nervous tbat they are ready to fly to pieces" And the short summer nights prove wholl Inadequate to restore nervous strengt and bodily vigor. Many good people denounoe the oustom of "taking a nap" in the daytime, and acoount those who Indulge in it lazy and shiftless early teachings confirmed us in the same doctrine, but observation has shown that nature olamoring for rest is really in need of it, and tbe time devoted to suoh wise purpoBo is not wasted, as is proven by the steady uorve and renewed energy that follow the short repose. Even a few minutes rest will exert a wonderful influence, and these need not necessarily bo spent in sleep in order to be beneHciftl. A good book, one that will prove interesting without taxing the brain to auy great extent will furnish the necessary relaxation and quiet for luoso who can never sleep iu the day time." Some favorite pastime or employment may answer tbe same purpose, but, if one feels sleepy, the very beat thing to do is to sleep not long and heavily, but just enough to rest and brighten the faculties and quiet the nervous system.

People are often credited with being cross, when in reality they are only tired out. If the daily siesta can work transformation and restore amiability to peevish, fretful woman, it will have tilled a worthy mission, even if a few seams less are sewed, and some minor duties omitted or allowed *.r wait. Neighbors may criticise, but nn inner eonsulousnoes will refute (he charges of slotbfulnoss, and husband and children will be happy iu the companionship of a patient and gentle wife and mother.

CANNING FRUIT. Mrs. H. W. Bcecher,

Tutting In tho fruit or vegetables boiling hot, and completely tilling tbe can, aro two points to be observed most strictly if one would have any success in canning. Tbore should also be no delay but tbe fruit and syrup should be dipped iuto tbe jar as rapidly as possible, when boiling hot. A can tilled so as to run over and instantly covered, and tightly screwed on, wiped clean and oovertd with paper, put iu a cool, dry, dark room, will be as fresh and floe flavored as it is possible for fruit to be that is not reall freshly gathered. But ajar carelessly filled, without being sure that the syrup is boiling hot, or the jar overflowingly full, if when opened it is not already fermenting, will oe so near to it rs to looee all flavor of fresh fruit add be unpalatable and unhealthy. It Is no saving of time to do any work carelessly, but in most cases a great losa of comfort, SSH»SSH3HHH=H=S

Tbe Immediate future is full of prom ise. On every hand men's energies, so long paralyzed, are reviving Want and distress have sensibly stimulated tbe enterprise and skill of our people. Economy In all brances of government, State and Federal, is the rule, and no longer the exception. A greater number of men are willing to work for a living than at any time since tbe war, and farmers and skillful and Industrious mechanics iu all partsof tbe country are earning a living. Few men are making rapid fortunes, and speculation has undoubtedly received a blow but faithful, punctual, honest and skillful labor is already getting tbe moderate reward ith which it was satisfied before 1870. It is a curious sign of tbe times tbat in many of our cities bouse*building baa recommenced, but the houses are mostly small acd inexpensive. Finally, there little doubt that if tho people who cry out about the severe pressure of tbe times aud demand anew inflation could be examined, it would be found tbat they consist almost entirely of two classes—tramps, and speculators who bought at the top of an inflated market and are suffering the results of tbeir incautious ventures. But no legislation can help these two classes..
