A PAPER FOR THE PEOPLE.
•$t*i&'jBOWRL COMPLAINTS. "Bowel complaint" is a very comprehensive term and inclades not only diarrbcei, dyeetery, cholera, bat many other conditions of the food canal, to which, In common language, no distinctive name has been given. Mothers ought to have definite ideas about these maladies, because they are the natural guardians of their children, and should be able to discover the earliest indications of disease. We do not mean that mothers should be physicians. The great purpose of this series of es3ays on infancy In health and disease has been not so much to enable, motbera to cure diseases as to prevent them. It is: the mother's duty to keep her children well and tbe physicians to cure what she could not prevent. However well she may be versed in tbe art of medicine, her love for her children Is so great as to lessen her discretion and warp her judgment. So we wish to give mothers a general view of bowel complains, that they may recognize them in their Initial stages, see them in their germs, anc) check them in their efforts at development. A knowledge of the' usual coarse of diseases will enable them to be efficient as mothers and nurses, and help them to know wheato send for a physician and to render all needed InIbrnfation when he arrives.
The wise medical adviser does not prescribe so moch for diseases as for conditions. Diseases of tbe alimentary canal assume so many forms and depend upon so many condition* that tbe wise phys'dsn does not willingly prescribe without knewing something more than the number or frequency or the uiovements. Each esse may demand a distinct series of questions. In many cases tbe conditions and causes may be so obvious that they are quickly seen and duly appreciated. No disease has so many conditiona and causes as that of
rinfancybycanal,
tbe food none which in feeble demands so much consideration, none that is so often made better or worse, proper or improper medication.
Mild diarrhoea is nearly universal in inhntrt. The mucous membrane of the intestines is easily disturbed. Heat impairs the digestive force, and food undigested passes over the inner surface of the alimentary canal, irritates it and increases more or less its normal action. Watch the excretions of a toothing infant in hot seasons, and you may find curds and other undigested food, and may safely anticipate the cooping of diarrhoea, if nothing is done to promote better digestion.
When this malady is caiuapd by indigestlon, tbe first thing to be done must be to rertove the cause by giving more easily digested food, or Jin some way, increasing the digestive force. Slight looseness of the bowels, restlessness at night, moaning In sleep, the stools becoming inore frequent fromday to da. may well alarm tbe mother. She sboulc not let this period pass without an effort to change the order of events. Glve th child leas food and soothing drinks, audi as barley water made agreeable to taste. thutrihe medicine or food can do good, (jive those remedies your pbysi ii hi prescribe. If this treatment does not check tbe trouble the ohild will grow worse and have green and thin movements, mixed with an increased amount of curds and muoous.
The ysung mother is nnable to guide such cases to a happy end. so she should send for her physician rather than give her child iriixtures Ibai aomt one may say, "aregood for diarrhoea," especially if tbe sick child is fast growing thinner and sicker, its flesh softer, its eyes duller and Us iuffetings lift various forms Increaaigif hii jK^iinfey iuii severity. She should, therefore, relieve the Indigestion as the first step in the course of treatment. If she does not succeed In doing this, the acids that are still generated will in crease still more the secretions of muoous that readily ferments and decomposes and give the stools various degrees of cffenslveness. A bad fea —tyo is that the acids
In intents the brain and spinal eon) are soft and weak. Excessive heat renders them still weaker and inefficient. So food is not so easily digested in hot as In cold seasons. Heat impairs the tone of the digestive sack, or lessens the digestive force of the stomach. The fbroe depends foe its efficiency upon the health and strength of the nervous system. So anything that debilitates the latter renders all functions mcfe or less impaired.' Heat, then, produces lndlgestion and diarrhoea by first diminishIng tbe nervous power. And so we find, by actual observation, that if we remove this eauaft, we stop tbs progress or the disease. Then tbe proper course for the mother to pursue is to keep the child cool. Ventilate its room early in the day. Admit the oool and fresh air of the morning hours, and by o'clock shut the windows, doss the blinds and draw the curtains. Exclude thus the increasing boat of day, until tbe dedtnlntt of tbe sunset's loose, fresh and cool breeses. Wash often during tbe heat of dsy, the bead and spine. Bring a soft llannel out bias, ana thus made elsitfa around its bowels. Keep it horrixoaul aa long as possible. Give it mild and soothing food* Millt diluted with barley water la usually easily digested. If the child is teething it may not be wise to stop the diarrhoea, but do not neglect it, and do not fail to keep it under your own control.
If the child's bowels beloosa and the excretions be offensive, boil the milk* In early Infancy avoid rice. Ir the child be thin,

If teething is disturbing the quietness of tbe bowels, and the gums are red and swoolen, lance them.
Watery, frequent (usd colorless movements mean that amrtous condition of tbe alimentary canal exists, sud that choiets Infantum has made an and demands immediate attention.
