TBIN SKINS.
STp doubt sensitiveness is a mark of refined temperament, but in view of the roQghnesa of everyday life, we can bat think that too much of it ia a positive misfortune.
The sensitive man 1a never thoroughly
b®ppy*
He la too thin skinned to bear with equanimity the temperature ot the world at large. He la always getting alighted by somebody. He ia aiwaya having his feelings hurt: Some wrong la being continually done bim. He is always left out when he should be counted in, and vioe versa.
If Mrs., who Is near righted and would not recognize her own grandfather three doors off, meets him on the street and dees not bow—be Is slighted
Mrs. A bas cat bim If Jenkins has a party and invites a dozen friends, and leaves onr tbin skinned friend out, ho feels himself aggrieved. If his next door neighbor bas an attack of dyspepsia and wears along face in consequence,
1
our sensitive man is sure there is semething wrong. Somebody bas been misre re in
He
is always in trouble. As a child, his nose will be perpetually out of joint as a young man his teachers will be in a conspiracy against bim to prevent bim from gaining the first honors and when It comes to falling in love, and going courting, Heaven preserve him I for if there is a marriageable man within ten milea of bis "beloved," he will be sure to think she favors him.
Your thin skinned man ia always taking bints. 'Jgbe old adage says. "If the Baddle fits then buckle tbe girths.' allv
If
He is continually buckling girths, anybody laughs behind his back, they are laughing at him. If be bas along nose and noses are mentioned, be is sure he is attacked. If be comes from a poor family, and anybody mentions poverty, be Is ready to flare up—they are twitting bim with bis bumble origin.
His friends are a source of unhappiness to bim, for they must .talk, and who can manage conversation so skillfully as not to run against some of the angles of a sensitive man
Tbe minister means him, he feels sure, when be is preaching about special sinners, and consequently bo refuses to subscribe fifty dollars to that worthy's salary.
Almost every newspaper article be reads bits bim, and he is rsady to beard the editor and challenge the author in behalf of his wounded feelings.
Iu abort, ho leads a llfo of it, ana every humane person must pity hiin. Time will, in some measure, wear away extreme sensitiveness, but it is a long, hard struggle, and if auy of onr readers are born with thick sk'ns, let them thank fortune for it.
For it is a faat that this world will go on lust as it has gone on for ages, totally unmindful of individual feelings, heedless of crushed spirits and broken hearts, careless of lost happiness, Indifferent to tbe joys or

W A O I O S IN I AT E Thero are light, quick, surface voices that involuntarily seem to utter tbe slang 'I Wont do' to tie to.' The man's words may assure you of his strength ot purpose and reliability, yet bis tone oontradlcts his speech.
Then there are low, deep, strong voices, where the words seem ground out, as If tbe man owed humanity a grudge, and means to pay It some day. That man's opponents may well tremble, and his friends may trust hiB strength of purpose and ability to act.
There is the coarse, boisterous, dictatorial tone, Invariably adopted by vulgar portions, who have not sufficient cultivation to understand their own Insignificance.
There is the incredulous tone, that is
voice, that says "sycophant" as plainly aa If It uttered the word. It cajoles and flatters you Its words say, "I love you I admire youi you are everything that you should be."
Then there is the tender, musical, oompasslonate voice, tbat sometimes goes with »harp features (as they Indies to merely intensity of feeling) and sometimes with blunt features, out always with genuine benevolence.
If you are full of affectation and pretence, your voice proclaims It. If you are full of honesty, strength and purpose, your voice proclaims it.
If you are cold and calm and firm and oonalstent, or fickle and foolish and de~ oepUous, your toico will be equally truth telling.
You cannot change your voice from a natural to aa unnatural tone without its being known that you are doing so.
A SKELETON IN EVERY HOUSE. Toledo Blade. The original of the above is briefly this: A young student of Naples, believing hiinseit dying, and rearing the news of his death would break the heart of his widowed mother, who passionately loved him, after much reflection adoptdf the following device: He wrote to bis mother telling her he was 111, and that a sexjthsayer baa foretold he oould not get well until he wore a shirt made by a woman who had no trouble, iu fact, who was perfectly happy and oontented. The widow, in her simplicity, thought that tbe attaining such a garment was an easy task but after making inquiries from her friends, (bund tbat each had a secret care. At last she heard, from surrounded
making her happy. The old Jlady hastened to tier and made known her wish the lady made qo xeply, but took her visitor into an adjoining? closet, where *he was horror struck at beholding* skeleton sos-

nded from abeam. *Fbr twenty years I been married," said the lady. **I was forced to marry my hnsband wbile loving another shortly after our wedding my former husband oame one evening to bid ae farewell forever my husband surprised us while together, aud instantly stabbed him whom be unjustly suspected to the heart he then caused his skeleton to be preserved, and every day be makes^ne vlsitlt." Tbe widow concluded that no one was with* oat tremble, and as her eon had desired, she became reconciled to the idea of his losa. Every one has his troablee—there is a skeleton in every house.
MA RRIRD POLITENESS. "Will you asked a pleasant voice And tbe husband answered* "Yee, my dear, with pleasure."
It was quietly but heartily said, the tone, manner, the look, were perfectly natural end very affectionate. *'I beg
Sour
pardon," comes as readily to bis ps. when by any little awkwardness be has disconcerted her, as it would if he were in the presence of tbe moat fashionable stickler for etiquette. This is because be is a most thorough gentlemen, who thinks bis wife in all things entitled to precedence. He tyves her best—why should he hesitate to show it, not in sickly, mauplin attentions, but in preferring her pleasure and honoring her in pa bile as well as private. He knows ber worth, wky should he hesitate to attest it? "Ana henbasband be praised her/' saitb Holy Writ not by fulsome'adulation, not by pushing her charms into notice, but by speaking as opportunity occurs in a manly way, of her virtues.
Though words seem little things, and slight attentions almost valueless, yet depend on it, they keep the flame bright, especially as they are natural. Tbe children grow op into a better moral atmosphere, and learn to respect their parents as they see them respecting each other. Many a boy takes advantage of a mother he loves, because he often sees the rudeness of his father. Insensibly he gathers to his bosom tbe same habits ana the thoughts and feelings they engender, ana in his turn becomes tbe petty tyrant. Only his mother—why should he thank ber? father never does. Thus tbe home becomes tbe seat of disorder and unhappiness. Only for strangers are kind words expressed, and hvpocrite go ont from tbe hpartintme ful prepared to render benevolence and politeness to any one and every one out those who have the justest claims. Ah! give us tbe kind lance, the happy homestead—tbe smilng wife and courteous children of the friend who said so pleasantly "Yes, my dear, with pleasuie." /v
PROGRESSIVE INDIANS. Austin, Ney., Reveille. Parties in from Upper Reese River Valley state that recently in tbat locality tbe Shoshone Indians chopped oft the bead of a medicine man of tbat tribe who was suvpeoted of having bewitched a patient. It is customary among the Snoshones and Flutes that when a medicine man fails to effect a care, and the patient dies on his hands, they stone bim to death, and this decapitation of the unsuccessful medical practitioner is anew departure from the established customs of the re tribes. Thus are the influences of civilization gradually making themselves felt and manifest among the unto* tored red men and we should not be surprised if ere long a trial by jury is accorded the medicine man who howls a sick Indian to deatb, and the courtesy of a coroner's inquest granted to bis body after tbe execution of capital .sentence upon him.
THE MARCH OF WOMEN. {National Journal.! Thirty years ago there was not a single woman doctor in this country, now there are over five hundred.
There are three medicil colleges exclusively for women, and four mens colleges where women are admitted.
Several women have become experts in dentistry in this country. There are sixty-seven women preachers in the United States.
Oberlin college, in Ohio, has graduated more women than men, although both sexes are admitted on equal terms.
There are ninety-seven colleges in the United States where men and women are lK)th admitted.
Boston Bulletin: The editor's is a most faocinatin^ employment, does not require any previous education or preparation, and pays enormously. The principal occupation of leading editors is to receive enormous bribes for leading articles to attend theaters, concerts and other places of public resort, occupying the best places, of course, and to inform political leaders how they should regulate affairs. Assistant editors and reporters, who are scarce at $365 a week, generally work four hours a day when they are not away on vacations, have free passes everywhere, and the

of their company is contended by the elite of the city.
"This mule," remarked the livery stable man as they passed the stall where the animal was leaning up against the partition, dreaming ox an Eden wherein there was but one mule and a thousand timid men.—'.'this mule, is a kicker." "This one?" Innocently inquired the' young man. laying his hand upon the mule% bustle to be sure that the proper animal was indicated. "This —. The liveryman said he didn't mind the loss of the money (as the young man did not take out the fancy ng he was going to look at), but what he hated about it was hating the roof of the stable mussed up so where the young man went through.
