A DEPOT

CLOCK.

'Tber®, Slmona, you blockhead! Why didn't

TOO

trot that old woman aboard

her train She'll have to wait here cow until tho 1:05 a. m.' •Yea, I did tell you! Yon knew well enough, "fwas only your confounded stupid carelessness!' 'Sbe! You fool! What else could you expect of her? Probably hasn't any wit besides, she isn't bound ou a very jolly journey—got a pass up tho road to the poor bouse.' 'I'll go and tell her. and if you forget her to-night, see if I don't make mincemeat of you.'

And our worthy ticket agent shook his liit menacingly at his subordinate. 'You've missed your train, inarm,' he remarked, coming forward to a queer looking bundle in the corner.

A trembling hand raised the faded black vail, ami revealed tbe sweetest old lac« I ever saw. 'J?vcr mind,' said a quivering voice. "TJs only three o'clock now you'll have to wait until the night train, which doesn't go up until 1:05.' n? 7 'Very well, sir, I can wait.' 'Wouldn't you like to go to some hotel Simons will show yon the way.' •No. I thank you, sir. One place is as good as another to me. Besides, I haven't any money. 'Very well,' said the agent, turning «way indifferently. 'Simons will tell you when it's time.'

All the afternoon she sat ther9 so quiet that 1 thought sometimes she must be asleep, but when I looked more closely, I could seo every once in a while a great tear roll down her cheek, which she would wipe away hastily with her cotton handkerchief.

The depot was crowded, and all was bustle and hurry until the 9:50 train goi ug east came ua then every passen ger left except the old lady. It is very rare indeed that any one takes the night express, aud most always after I have struck ten, tho depot becomes silent and empty. 'J tie ticket agent put on his great coat, and hklding Simons keep bis wits about him for once in bis life, departed for home.

But ho had so sooner gone than that functionary stretched himself out upon the table—as usual—and begau to snore vociferously.

Then it was I witnessed such a sight as I never had beteroand never expected to av aiu.

The tire had gone down—it was a cold night and tho wind bowled dismally outside. Tho lamps grew dim and ilarei, casting wierd shadows on the wall. By-and by I hoard a smothered sob from tho corner—then anotner. I looked iu that direction. Sbe had risen from her seat, aud oh! the look of agony on tho poor piuched face. '1 can't believe It,' she sobbed, wringing bor thin, white hands. 'Oh! I can't bellevoit! My babiei! my babies! how often havo I held them in my arms and kUsed them and how often they used to toy buck to u)o, *'Ise loves you, matn my.'' and now, oh God! they've turned against mo. Whore anil going? To the poor house! No! no! no! I cannot! I will noi! Oil! tho disgrace!'

And sinking down upon her knoos, she sobbed out in prayer: 'Oh, (.Ml, spare uie this and take me homo! Oh, Ood, sparo me!'

sparo me this disgrace,

'Tho wind rose higher and swept through the crovlces icy cold, liow it moaned, and seemed to sob like something h'uiwu that is hurt. I began to shako, but the kneeling figure never stirred. The thin shawl had dropped from her shoulders unheeded. Simons turned over and drew his heavy blanket more closely about lilm.

Oil, how cold! Only one lamp remained burning dimly tho other two hud gone out for want of oil. I could hardly see, it was so dark.

At last site bocatue qu'eter and ceased to moan, Then I grow drowsy, and kind ot lost tho run ot things after I had struck twelve, when soino oue entered tbo depot wilU a bright light. I started up. It was the brightest light I ever saw, and Beemod to til I the room full of glory. 1 could see 'twas a man. He walked to tho kneeling figure and touchod her upou the shoulder. 8{»e started up and turned wildly around. I heard bun say: "Tls tialn time, marm. Come!1

A look of joy came over hor laoe 'I'm ready,'she whispered. 'Thou givo me your pass, marm.' She reached him a worn old book, which he took, and from it read aloud: '(?ome unto me all ve that are weary and heavy laden, and I will give you rest' 'That's the pass over onr mad, marm. Are you r^a-1 j?'

The light died away, and darkness fell in its place. My hand touobed the stroke of one. Simons awoke with a start and snatched his lantern. The whistle souuded down brakes the train was duo. 11* ran to the corner and shook the old woman. •Wak© up, marm its train time.'

But she never heeded. He g*v* oue look at the white set fact, and, dropping his lantern, tied.

The up train halted the eondnctor shouted all aboard, but uo one stirred that

Ttis next morning when tho ticket agtMit c*me, found her 'froa^a to dMth.' They whispered among themselves, and the coroner made out the vertlicfApiplexy,'and it was in some wav hu«hkl up.

They laid b*rout in the depot, and advertised for her friemis, bui no one oaiuo. S alter ttae aeeoud day, they buried her.

The last look on that sweet, old face, lit up with a smile so unearthly I keep with u»o yet and when I think of the occurences 6l th.it night, I know she went out on the other train, tkai never I atoppwl at the jvor house.—Detroit Com uiereial Advertiser.

PERILS OF A XJGHTllIDR lie got on the train at Colfalx, walked into the sleeping car, and pulling out two dollars, demauded of the African the lower berth. *v "All full, sail." "Lower berths ail token? Well, I'm devilish sleepy I'll take an upper berth but it's a pretty note that a uian oau't -a berth an this road. Here, chuck thu sack into some safe place, and lie caroluI and not smash the bottle In the top. Take this money, quick, and get the twd ready." "Do lower berths la all full, salt, and so is do tipper. Kfteryting was 'g»ged, sah, before we tell Sacramento* Ye

"The dene® you say!" Whau the titan haul finished blowing off his steam, he hounoed out into the other car. slammed down his valise and woke up another tuau who waaanooalag

in his seat to tell him the sleeper was full. The ethe other man informed him that he knew all about that four hours before.

The disappointed passenger then pnt bis sack under a seat, and composed himself for slumber by running bis knees as high up 011 the bock of the next seat as possible, while he slid down on his own seat as low as he could, until the top of his head Tested on tho ton of a brass screw which was used in tne upholstery. In this position his body assumed the form of a letter N turned upside down. At first he im agined he conld rest forever in this comfortable position, and dropped off to sleep.

The conductor came along soon and woko bim np for bis ticket. He was nndvr considerable obligation* to tho conductor for waking him up as be did, for be found his joints were getting stiff, and another fifteen minutes would have crippled bim for life.

He next put bis sack at the end of a seat and used it for a pillow. When he laid his bead down on the carpet sack his cheek became smeared with a fresh quid of tobacco juico which the sack had Dicked up from the floor. He then remarked. a few times, removed the tobacco and coiled himself up for a nap.

He was in good position and his feet stuck through the end of the seat and bung into the aisle. Presently a man got up to get a drink, and he bad to move the obstruction by pulling them through the ornamental work and holding th&m in the air until the uian got his drink and went back. By the timo seventeen other passengers bad drank, he concluded hi* position might be improved, and askod a brakeman to turn two seats facing each other. The brakeman said he couldn't. He had the same luck with a baggaj,:nmaster and a newsboy. He then tried to pick the lock with his knife, and broke four blades out of six in elevon minutes.

At length the conductor cairte along and fixed the seat. He then endeavored to sleep by putting his heels oil on© seat an$ his bead on another. Tbe seat got tho best of the bout in t&n minutes, He then placed bis carpet sack between the seats, and sat dowu on it, with his legs on tho top of the seat ahead, and his head laid back on the seat behind. The seats won this round in ten seconds. He then took tbo cushions and stretched them on the frames and seats parallel with the cars.

When ho coiled himself up in this position he thought it was a veritable ''Dream of the Albauibra," and in three minutes was asleep, and in four thought he bad just been elected to Congress by an overwhelming nssjority. Then he dreamed he was lost on an iceberg in the Polar seas, and woke up to find that a man who had got off at Verdi had left tho door open and the cold air of the mountains was pouring in on him. He tried to warm up with a drink, but found his bottlo smashed, at which he remarked, as formerly, and walked up and down the car, repeating it every ton minutes until he reached Rono. Next timo he travels in tbe night he savs he will eutjnge a sleeper a month ahead.

From a toy's composition on Cens: 'I put my Uncle William's ben's head off with a hatehett, and it scared her to death.'

I've got something in my pocket to give you when I go away,' said a gentleman to a little girl. 'Then I wish you'd go right otf,' was the frank response.

A littlo boy in a Sioux City Sutfday pctiool put a poser to his teacher. The lady was telling her class bow God punished the Egyptians by causing tho first born in oach family to be slain. 'Johnny, can you tell me where Christ was born?' said sbe •Kaston, ma'am,' replied the youth. •Why, no, Johnny,' said tho amazed young ladv. 'Christ was born at Bethlehem. 'Well,' said Johnny, 'I knew it was some place on tbe Lehigh Valley road.'—E!mira Advertiser.

A bevy of children were tellifig what what they got at school. The eldest got reading, spelling and arithmetic. A boy in a Sunday school proposed a question to be answered the Sunday following: 'How many letters does the Bibio contain?' Tbe answor was three millions five hundred aud thirty thousand three hundred and thirty-three.
