The account of a terrible affair at Cbudd'H Ford, PA.,
REACHES
us. At the
place named there is a turbulent stream running between high banks, on wh'ch stunted willows grow, while further down, at the water's edge, grows tho weeping variety of the same tree dips "its greenish tresaw* in the musical waer, which has bashed its riotous noise to almost a requinm since the death of
George Ricketts and Mollie Dolbell— "as fine a young man and as pretty a
fn
jlrl," the farmers say, "a* you will nnd all Bbester couaty." This is how they met their death: Mollie was one of those p.nk and white dairy maids that you sometimes aieet in the grazing regions of Pennsylvania. Her hair was bonny brown, hut witu just a glint of black in it. mifit bid been gently touched with a raven's v/ing. She was light hearted aa the lark »vith which she srose—the lark that carolled above her bead, as she looped her neatdress about her entrancing anklea, at4 skimmed into the stone dairy where the painted pans were ranged in rowa, and the yellow pots of butter flecked the cool /water.
Tbo trouble with Mollis was that she bad two lovers—one, George Kicketts, a stalwart farm hand, and tbo other Hagh McDonnel, a sullen red whiskered man, employed on tho small drawbridge over, the turbulent stream we have spoken of. This dnw was seldom used save for a lazy (schooner that came up to get terracotta pipe from a manufactory ftbOV6
The two men knew they were rivals and Mollie knew it to, her heart being sorely troubled as she stood Saturday evening before Lent in the poroh pf the house where she lived and promised to tak* a ride on the tnorrow with George —not a ride in a buggj', nor in a sail boat, but a rattling ride on a band car, a praottce which is frequent on those loneiv roads, whose rails vibrate but Heldo':n under the crushing advance of the engine.
It is unnecessary to describe the hand car which litu the rails, works by crank, and when started goes like the wind. Tho car had boon loaned George by a sband of laborers who were making re pairs about a rnilo above. He had dustedit neatly, and when the pretty girl .reached him by a short path through the woods he had arranged the vehicle so cleverly with'a cushion for Mollie that it did not seem unlike Cleopatra's borgM. She was dressed in her Sunday best, and sho laughed lightly in the sunshine as George swung her lightly into the seat aud then leaped to the handles.
There woro nj Sanday triius, there was no danger. Mollie crossed her tiny foet, felt the exhilaration of the movement, as George's swelling arm produced the torrible momentum, saw her ne.it skirts blown H*out by tho rn^h1'!^ wind beneath th" platform. On, on they went, tho glistening rails ringing, tho bonny brown hair blown about and the Fox run bridge near at hand.
On the bridge {Jngh McDonnell sat Bru'tking his pipe. The draw wi^ open, although no drifting schooner was in slight. Nome evil bird had whisper A to Hugh of the Sunday ride of hii rival with Molly. Redetermined on nfurder at once. Thin is why the rusty draw was open, while llngh Hat In his ?«ntry 'box on the other side smoking his pipe and watching np tho converging lines of metals that'seemed like satin ribbons tied in a bow by the perspective. lie did not have to wait long. Fir»t eauio the rumble—the far-away sound that dies away while it introa*es—and then, swinging suddenly around a curve, the hand car bearing the woman he loved aud tho man ho hated. He drew another whiff of smoke and look edo.ilinly at the tumbril of death with its arms whirling wildly, since George trusted to the steep grade nnd tho ap {wiling nccolleratlon be had given the machine accomplish the passage of the bridge, and had ant alongside of
Mollie with his arms srouud hor waist. Just as they nearod tho draw, which •was never legally allowed open on Sunday, he turned his head and his face became white. He sprang to his 'feet and tried to selr.e thoao revolving handles which were only a blur and a mist. He thought of throwing the girl off, but before he could think of anything else the car took tho leap, and as Hugh McDonnell sat smoking in his sentry box he saw the upturned faces, pallid with agouv, but pressed close together, go down with the hand car to tbo deep pools and cruel rooks below, and as ho did so he said "Curse you!" and lighted another

'hey found him there, but mad—not raving mad, but in that lymphatic state of mania which is beyond reach. On tho all »ro belowl h'Jkljby the gnarl*d roots-of a willow, were discovered the bodies of George and MoUio. In the moment of death she had thrown her arm* ab«ut him, and as the suulight til tered through tho surging boughs ami fell upon the upturned faces, they seemed like bride and groom in tho sleep of bappihesM. So they were married, but death had been the minister.
EXTRA 1 'AlfAWKATFUNKTlA IJS. The Methodist ministers of Washington ha\e been discussing extravagance at funerals, and have concluded to make the following recommendations to their parishioners: '-The wearing of mourning apparel be restricted to those sustaining toe nearest relationship to the dead, and that tho us* of erapo and other insignia of mourning at the funeral be dispef-aod with that in the chotoe of a burial naaket or c^fflu and its adornments, in tho use of dowers in the form of wreaths, crosses, anchors and boquetM, a conscientious ocmiomy and commendable simplicity exercised that hacks be provided only for the odtdatmg clorgyman, pall hearers, and the family, and at tho close of the funeral services in the church or house, the bereaved be allowed to bury their doad in the privacy of grief. That in tbe securing of these much needed reforms on the one hand, persona of wealth add all burying societies and orders which have accumulated funds sot an example of economy and simplicity and «n the other hand, those who can not afforl these needless exercise a manly independence in following the dictates of their own judgment and conscience. That all Sabbath funerals, especially thoae which by bands of music and showy parade attract a crowd, and thus interfere with the sanctity of the day, be avoided and discontinued."
Jansnschek, who has been on the at ago twenty-seven years 'and has never missed an engagement from illness, is Illustration of the fact that if tho Mage

New York City claims to have an excess of ten thousand marriageable women. •During his ministry he made six hundred hearts beat as three hundred,' is the way a Maine paper neatly puts it, concerning a local pastor.
A St. Louis man who baa a wife thafc is always low spirited and blue, was asked to wear a blue ribbon. 'No,' said be,'I have one bine rib on my hands now.' •Well, Annie, how did you get on with that stupid lover of yours? Did yon succeed in getting rid of him?' 'Oh yes. I got rid or him easily enough. 1 married hioa, and have no lover now
He had brought her the very things she wanted from the supper table to her safe retreat on the stairs, and she was moved to K«y, half laughingly, 'You are a man after my own heart, Mr. B.' 'Just bat I'm after,' he answered,(quick as a flash, covering her with confusion. 'Well, it can't be for long,'convulsively sighed the boreaved widow, as she returned from tho last obsequies of her dear lamented, 'No, it won't bo long,' and sure enough it wasn't. Six months later she was skipping around pricing orange blossoms and inquiring aiter the latest and best styles in wedding cards.
A lady says engagements are very unsatisfactory sort of affairs, for if you are not very polite and Attentive, the gentleman thinks you do not care for him, and you are afraid to be polite for fear the engagement might sometime be broken off, when you would be sorry to think you had wasted so ranch sweetness on some other woman's husband.
A young man recently married, who has be«u an enthusiastic collector of coins, found that bis wife, with the charming freshness characteristic of brides, has been drawing on his cabinet lor change, aud among other things had passed out an old penny, for which he had paid $33.50, for a cent's worth of yeast. That veast'raised' more in that household tnan any previous investment of the same amount of money.!
THE FOOL CATCHER.'
"Be Liberal With Me awl I'll be Liberal Wiih You." I,
Crown Point Register.'
First he gave a lot of cheap finger rings away, worth alout a farthing each, and the& threw a lot among the crowd.
Next he offered one dozen rings, neither gold, silver nor brass, for ten cents each each, saying, 'pay mo as much as you want to—be liberal with me and I'fl be liberal with you,'aud after disposing of the dozen he paid back ten cents to those who had paid ten cuits, and fifty cents to those who had given quarter.
His next move was to offer a dozen lockets at twenty five cents each 'but you can pay as much more as you like— only be liberal with me, and I'll be liberal with you.' The lockets went on at a lively rate, and after they were sold ho paid tbe quarter back to those who had invested only that'amount to those who gave fifty cents he paid one dollar, and to one or* two who paid a dollar he gave two dollais.
The next wn« the sale of gentlemen's vest chains. H«« said he should only sell nine—for oi»»* dollar each—repeating that'if you'll be liberal with »ne, why, I'll be liberal with you—pay aa much more for tho chains as you wish—to him who gives lib4r«ll,v, much more to him shall be given.' Ttie chains were sold quickly, at prices ranging from one to two dollars each. Finally, he said he would sell a few more, and commenced handing out the chains for one, two, three, four and five dollars each. After disposing of about twenty-five he asked those who had bought to' hold up their chains. Every buyer's hand quickly went up towaro the buggy in which the seller was standing. Then he said, 'The sale of pure silver watches will take place at 7 oo'lock this evening. The chains for which you have paid me from one to five dollars each are worth about four cents each—I have been very liberal with you and you have been mighty liberal with ipe, therefore my best wishes go with you,'and picking up the reins he sailed down tbe street, leaving 25 victimized buyers standfng with wideopen mouths, who were greeted with the cheers, hoots, and cat-calls of those who had not taken in.
All this oscurred in front of the public square on Monday afternoon, the man being dressed in the costume of a clown snd a flesh tight mask on his face.}
VIRTUE IN WHISTLING. *-'r" An old farmer onee said be would not have a hired man on his farm who did not habitually whistlo. lie always hired whistlers. Said h« never knew a whistling laborer to find fauit with his food, his bed, or complain of any little extra work he was sake4 to perform. Such a man was geuerally kind to ohil (Iron and to animals in his care. He would whistle a chilled lamb into warmth and life, nnd would bring in his hat full of eggs from the barn without breaking one ot them. He found such a man more careful about clo^ng gates, putting up bars, and seeing that tbe nuts on his plow were all pfoperly tightened before no took it out into the field, lie never knew a whistling hired man to beat or kick a cow, or drive her on a run into the stable. He had noticed that the sheep that he fed in tbe yard and shed gathered around him as he whistled without fear. He never had employed a whistler who was aot thoughtful and economical.

AN OPEN LETTER.
IT SPEAKS FOR ITSELF. RoCKPORT^Mass., April 2,1877. MB. EDITOR Having read In your paper reports of the remarkable cures of catarrh, I am induced to tell "what I know about catarrh, and I fancy the "snuff" avu"in-lialing-tubt" makers (mere dollar grabber*) would be glad if they could eiiiblazon a similar cure in the papers. For26 years I* suffered with ca'trfrrli. The na*al passages became completely closed. "SSnuir, "dust," "ashes," inhaling tubes," and "sticks," wouldn't work, though at intervals I would snitf uptheso called catarrh snuff, until I became a valuable tester for Mich medicines. I gradually grew worse, and uoone' can know how much I suffered or what a miserable being I was. My head nolutt over my eyes so that 1 was con lined to my bed for many successive days, suffering the most intense pain, which atone time ladled continuously for 168 hours. All sense of smell and taste gone, sight and hearing impaired, body shrunken and weakened, nervous system shelteredt and constitution broken, levento relieve me of my suffering, A iavorable notice in your paper of Dr. Sage's Catarrh Kemedy induce, me to purchase a package and use it with Ir. Pierce's Na*al Douche, which applies the remedy by hydrostatic pressure, the only way compatible with common sense, well, Mr. lull tor, it did not cure me In thrfee-fourtlis of a second, nor in one hour or month, but in less than eight minutes I was relieved, and in three months»ntlrely enred, and have ren alned so for «ver six-pen months. While using the Catarrh Hemmed, I used Dr. PI tree's Golden Mtdjcal Discovery to purity my blood and strengthen my stomach.

NATURAL SELECTION. Investigators of natural sclenop have demonstrated beyond controversy, that throughout Iho animal kingdom the "survival of the Attest", is the only law that vouchsafes thrift and perpetuity. Does not the £auio principle govern tha commercial prosperity mt man? An inferior cannot supersede a superior article. By reason of superior merit, Dr. Pierce's Standard Medicines have outrivaled all others. Their sale in the United States alone exoeeds oue rail-. lion dollars perannnm, while the amount exported foots up to several hundred thousand more.
