Charley Kern seems to be making a rnotfol Sheriff for Chicago, and the papers up there, without regard to party ooiumend him highly. The Tribune, speaking of the economy with which tbe jAll and Sheriff's office are conducted, says "a continuation of this policy will save tho county about $30,000 a year, and it should be approved and encouraged."

L. Waison, or Vincennes, was in the city yesterday. Some twenty years ago he was a conductor on tbe E. A C. R. R. and his recollections of those times are interesting—being more vividly impref ed on his memory tban with moat citi zens who have lived here sinoe that time.
Mr. Lotze, of Fenner fc Lotze, was summoned to Cincinnati, on Monday, by tbe sudden death of bis father, Adolphus Lotze, an old, prominent and a it at as a us what is know as progressive muscular atrophy—a gradual and paiuless wast ing away of tbe muscular powers. The deceased came to tbis country in 1880. He has nearly all his life been engaged in the stove business, and was tbe pioneer as an inventor and introduction of hot air furnaces in tbe west. He leaves nine children, and by his industry and economy he has placed them in very comfortable circumstances.

We met a man tbis week who bad never heard of Brennan, tbe merohant tailor. But we found that he hadn't been in Terre Haute before that day for ten years, and hadn't seen a Terre Haute newspaper. After visiting his establishment, on Main street, above Sixth, and inspecting tbe goods he is making up for gentlemen before tbe holidays, and learning bis prices, be was not surprised at Brennan's great popularity.
