WM. H. STEWART,our ex-Sheriff, wbo has recently moved back to his farm in Otter Creek township, met with a distressing accident last Sunday. He was out hunting quails with his son William. The latter fired at a flock of the birds, snd unfortunately bis father was In range, back of some bushes. The shot took effect in the face. The injury is not fatal, and we are glad to learn that Mr. Stewart will not suffer the loss of an eye, as first reported.
THE Grand Jury talks of attempting to enforce the Sunday law, and also require saloons to close at eleven o'clock at night, as the law directs. This is right. It will allow every one an opportunity to go toebnrob, and permit every married man to bo in tbe bosom of bis family at a reasonable hour at night. There is no necessity for any man going out to get a drink after eleven o'clock.
THE Kettledrum" in preparation by tbe ladies of tbe Aid Society promises to be a monster affair. Old and young are taking hold of the preparatory work with the greatest spirit. Besides tbe Kettledrum proper, there will be sale tables, and performances on the stage, a portion of which will be of an operatic character. Tbe evenings of the 20tb and 21st are set down for this notable event.
AMONG the exercises of tbe Mont Rose social, held at the residence of Mr. Wm. Davis, was an essay by Miss Kittle Leake her subject being Tbe First? Chapter of the Chronicles of the afont Rose province." It was well composed, and gave great credit to Miss Leake. Tbeae socials are increasing in nuuiber and in interest and are being largely attended by both young and old.
W. H. BANNISTER, wbo has been in the clothing business here for the past twenty years, honored and respected, was compelled to close his doors last Monday morning. He surrendered all his property to his creditors, and all will sympathize with him in bis misfortune. R. S. Tennant has been named as assignee.
THE Horticultural Society hold an unusually Interesting meeting at the south Sixth street residence of Hon. H. D. Scott, on Thursday. The next meeting—tbe annual meeting—will be held at the residence of Rev. S. 8. Martyn..
