Kitty's Thanksgiving,
i.
'Kitty, my dear,' said George Heith, gazing fondly at bis pretty little wife: •you've often heard me speak of my friend Will Howard I haven't seen him «ince I've been a married man, and now he's coming to pay us a visit, and to become acquainted with my precious little wife.' 'Indeed responded Mrs. Kitty, elevating her eyebrows, while her dimples gave empbaa.s to her worda. 'When will this best beloved chum of yours arrive?' 'In time for oar Thanksgiving dinner, dearest, probably the evening before.'
Here George Heith paused and took a deliberate and comprehensive aurvey of Kitty, as if he'd never seen her bnfore and was determined to impress the lovely image on the inner vision of his memory.
Then he added: "To my way of thinking, you're sufficiently pretty, Kitty, witheut all those gewgaws and gimcracks in which your feminine soul seems to delight. I'd like to see you try 'sweet simplicity' for once' •Perhaps I will, dear, Just to please you,' assented Mre. Kitty, prettily and demurely. 'Does your friend share your weakness for that style.' •I realK don't know,' replied Mr. 'He used to laugh Heltb, with a smile. at me and say I might ai. well attempt to make the Etuiopian to cbango his skiu, or the leopard bis spots, as to endeavor to revolutionize a woman's dress, or induce her to walk in deflanoa of the fashions.' 'Very foolish of yon to waste so much time on so vain an effort, then,' remarked Mrs. Kitty, with a uay little laugh. 'You'll succeed 'when rivers run up 1)111!'
Now George and Kitty were as loving and dovotod a couple as evor walked oontentedly through life side by side and this modest little home, under Mrs Kitty's skillful management, was a perfect paradlso on earth. So thought her husband, and be was neve/ tired ol his young wife's clever bouse
teeping. "Jut at to Kitty, fond of 'outward adorning,' was extremely annoying he was never weary of ridiculing the lolly of womeu in dress. It must oe admitted that our heroine took a deep dollght in plaiting tho hair, and wearing gold,' also in 'the puttlug on of apparei.r
But Ueorfte Heith had a hobby, which aor
It muy then be readily imagined that while arranging her hair in puffs and friw.es, assisting nature by the addition of sundry artificial braids and curls, it was not pleasant to have her critical husband lecturing her and throwing at her head, so to speak, incontrovertible quotations from that severe Apostle reter, showing bis profound contempt for'hrohiered hair, or gold, or pearls, cr oostly array."
Then too, how Georgo would laugh at the gilded butterflies, the coquettish bows, the bits of leather and jet which she delighted to plac» artistically in her hair. OverskirU he spoke of as an abomination and a wicked waste of xls while as for flounces and ruffles, ind no patience! 'You'd look better in my eyes, Kitty,' he would frequently uay, 'with your hair plainly and smoothly combed back from your lace and twisted into a simple knot behind. We're losing our Republican simplicity! Six yards of goods is enough to make any woman a dress it's as much as our grandmothers required. A calico dress, clean and whole, is go-d enough to be worn at any place.
Thou the cruel follow had mado fun of her shoes her dear liUlo tbln-aoled, rosotted slippers and her exauisite brontn boo*s with their fearful anu wonderful heels. 'A good calfskin shoe, made high, with thick soles, and no heels at all would be much more sensible t'

in the habit of
uttering such sentlmerjta daily, in a dictatorial, dogmatic manner, as if it were impossible that sensible persons could hold two opinions on such a aul\)«et.
He wasn't more than half aware of how much he did aay, nor of how disagreeable it might be to Kitty, who received his lectures with pouts, laughter or blushes, as tbe case might be.
Yet in his head of hearts, he was really proud of his wife's elegant and ladylike appearance, and admired the skill aud ingenuity which could make a little go so far, and would have been highly Indignant at any one else who should venture to call her taate and judgment in drees into question.
But Mrs. Kitty didnt know all this, and for some time had been planning how to effect a cure. Now she had an opportunity tor carrying out a naughty plot.
It was the day before Thanksgiving, Mid Mrs. Kitty had been very busy comfounding goodies and dainties for the morrow. Me bad pat her small bous« in ezqulatte order, while aa a special compliment to tbe expscUni guest a basket of fragrant flowers adorned tbe •spare room.'
George hadaeen and admired all theae arrangements, and Kitty bad stolen out to the gate with him for a parting Mas, as be was about to start for his drive to the depot, promising him aweeUy—tb* dreadful little hypocrite!—to be all drawed, and to hare a charming supper in readiness wbeu be should return with Mr. Howard.

She slipped en a calico drt-ss really made from six yards of goods, straight in tbe waist, with long tight sleeves, and a skirt short and scant, guiltless of a ruffle. (Iudeed, it would seem Mrs. Kitty was reserving all ruffles tor her husband's temper.)
She completed this costume in assuming a narrow linen collar, then stood gazing and laughing at herself in the mirror. She did not look altogether hideous, for a fine figure, regular features and soft warm coloring would assert tbemsel res.
Kitty ran merrily down stairs, completed supper arrangements, and seated herself in the window to watch lor her husband and ber expected guest. Yes, there they were coming up the road! Bravo! Mrs. Kitty. She ran to the door to meet them.
George's look of consternation when bis eye fell on her was simply ludicrous. Wicked Mrs. Kitty was perfectly self possessed, and greeted Mr. Howard most cordially. Then with tbe 'light foot of a tairy,' she flew about, here, there, everywhere, on hospitable thoughts intent, and tbe newly arrived guest watched her with an amused «mi:e.
Supper was delicately served, and would have been a complete success had not Georgo sat as slum as the skeleton at the banquet. Tbe expression of his face was lugubrious his natural ta.kativenesa strangely subdued.
Early in the evening Mrs. Kitty excused herself and retired, leaving tbe gentlemen to talk over old times, and to enjoy a quiet cigar. At first the conver sation was harmless and commonplace enough but.at last it veered around to Mrs Kitty's sweet little self. Mr. Howard felt called upon to speak to George of his wife. 'She's a charming woman be said, warmly. Then added, warmly, with an embarrassed laugh, 'By tbe by, Heitb, 1 see you've succeeded in finding one you can induce to carry out your very sensible theories on tbe subject of a lady's dress. I never imagined you would.1 You remember how your eccentric lectures used to amuse us fellows at college we prophesied in those days that you'd marry a perfect butterfly. Not 'a Daniel come to judgment'in the whole crowd of us I After all, your ideas were not so bad. Every woman isn't as pretty as your wife, though, old boy, and, by Jove! not many could st&nd that bort of thing 1' •Will!' replied George, solemnly, 'my wife never dressed like that in all her life before. Sbe must have done it to punish me,'be added, lookingludicrosly like a big, naughty whipped boy. 'I've worried 'he poor child fearfully, I suppose. I shall own up sold, and beg her pardon I'
Will Howard stared at him silently for a moment, then as the joke became clearer to him, ho burst into a peal of laughter, in which poor Georgo was fain to join.
Mrs. Kitty, in ber room above, hearing the merry cachination, smiled knowing ly to herselr.
George did 'own up sold' and his wife accepted his apologies graciously, beg glng his pardon for the naughty way in which sho bad punished him. 'Kitty,'was his only reply 'never make such a auy of yourself again.'
Thanksgiving dinner was a grand affair. Mrs. Kitty presided, arrayed in an exquisitely fitting silk dress adorned by a lace ficbu. Sbe wore an elaborate chain and locket, long earrings and other or naments. Her hair was frizzed, curled, puffed and braided to its usual dimen siuns.
George thought be had never seen her look more charming, and was delighted' with his friend's evident admiration.
As for Mrs. Kitty, she remarked demurely 'that sbe found that she could be unusually sincere in her thanksgivings that day,*as George was cured of his only fault.'
PIOUS FUN.
The late Sunday .School Convention in Talmage's Tabernacle was marked by more fun than any religious assemblage ever known in Brooklyn. The merriment was introduci by Talinage, who tolit of the amazing inaptness of thequotatiotis made from Scripture by thoso whose conversions came late in life. He knew of one man who, in a doleful strain, told a congregation at a prayer meeting how great a sinner ho was. 'I was an awful sinner,' said he, 'u great sinner. I was tbe chief among ten thousand, and tii® one altogether lovely,' Some men never learn how to phrase a prayer. A spirited horao was running away with a man, and every minute

romlsed to be his last. He grabbed of tbe sides of the wagon as it bounced along after the rnnaway, an.l aa he could not think of any other prayer, he said, 'Ob, Lord, make us happy for the mercies we are about to receive.' There was a tiring sameness in tbe expressions of those who have experiences to relate. A young man got up once and said. 'I am on the ship of Zion, and we are sailing np the heavenly har* bor soon we'll reaoii the golden gates.' Another man said, 'I, too, am on (be ship of Zion, and we are sailing with a good breeze. I guess wo are going as fast as thirty knots an hour. Every man at his post. Soon we'll come to tbe pearly gates.' Another arose and said, •I, too, am on the ahip of Zion. It'a steamship—a -KiO-hoss power. We are going up the heavenly narbor, and we are going faster'n any other ship. We're bound to glory.' An old and feeble woman arose and said, Tm seventy year* old, aud for fifty years I've been on tbe road to heaven, but I've been goin' afoot, and I expect to keep goin' afoot until I get there and it seems to me if yon folks that's goin' in steamships doot take care, yooTlbunt yoor bitem* When this story wte told, tbe congregation rocked ana surged with laughter. *44* ?nrt» that We Know.

This Sarsaparilla is a combinnt ion dE vegetable alterativcs-Stillingia,MaH-drake,Yellow Dock—with the Iodides of Potassium and Iron, and is tho most efficacious medicine yet known for the diseases it is intended to curc-
Its ingredients aro so skilfully combined that the full altcrativo.. effect of each is assured, and whilo it is so mild as to be harmless even to children, it is still so effectual as to purge out from tho system those impurities and corruptions whtyrti develop into loathsome disease.
The reputation it cnioys is derived from its cures, and the confidence which prominent physicians all oyer the country rcposd in it proves tBPir experience of its usefulness.
Certificates attesting its virtues have accumulated, and aro constantly being received, and as many' of these cases arc publicly known* thev furnish convincing evidence of the" superiority of this Sarsapariltw over every other alterative metiicinc.
