I want to recommend to all churches that are contemplating having more fairs and festivals, tbe plan adopted by the ladies of Federal street society in Winteract. When tbe subject came up about buying a new organ It was suggested by tbe young people that the sewing circle, which bad been disbanded at tbe time of the Chi Ids and Bliss scandal, more than a year before, should be reorganized In order to prepare for a great fair and breakfast to be hel4 in the Sunday school room and the church parlors on the first day of May. 'It will never do.'said Mrs. Maloy, tbe minister's Wife. 'Some otbor method must be thought of a sewing society is such a motor and promoter of gossip, and there are so many hard feelings en-

therein. Even should there

a by-law forbidding tbe talking of scandal, and it should be rigidly enforced, there would be supposed slights and a thousand or less misunderstandings talked over. And then, some of the members would tattlo, and unkind remarks would be made.' 'I bave been thinking,' said Mrs. Vinton, the old deaconrs wife, in a tromblfng voice, 'that the unpleasant feelings at such gatherings are almost always caused by an uprising of temper, »ys causea by and if we could arrange in some way ao that every such manifestation should help the causo in which we are engaged, our success would bo assured from the start. 'Let us have a box placed in tbe little entry between tbe church kitcheu and pantry. It is rather a dark passage, as you all know, and is so narrow that only one person at a time can pass through it. Let every one of us, when we feel our besom rising, contribute to this boxanywhere front a penny to a dime. If we suffer ourselves to be only slightly annoyed a penny will be a sniDoiont line if a good deal ruffled, we must put in more. Each one must judge for himself or horsolf. It is a matter of conscience, of course, and it would be impossible for one person to judge for another in the premises. All hard feelings must be burled in that box, and not spoken of to anybody. After tbe fair we will get togotber, open the box and count up the accumulated fines paid as penalties for our bad tempers. All who are in favor of my proposition will pleaso raise their hands.'

There was much good-natured laughter over tbe queer suggestion, but every hand went up. and there was not one dissentient voice. 'What shall we bave for our besom box?' asked merry little Julin Clapp, at the first regular meeting.

A loxenge box was proposed by som one. 'Oh, doar, no,' exclaimed the old lady, Mrs. Vinton, 'how very amiable you must believe us all to be. I have asked my son for one of the oinpty soap boxes at his store, and it will be brought in this evening with the lid nailed on and along narrow silt cut into it through which the pennies are to be slipped.'

The sewing society meetings went on admirably and spiritedly al,l through the winter and spring. Never had there been so little trouble and dissatisfaction in tbe Federal streot church. Besides ths rogular monthly gatherings during the progress of tho preparations for tbe fair, many other ways lor raising money for the making and purchasing of articles were devised. It was argued that the young people of the village would go souie placo for amusement, and that it was better for them to come to tho church parlors, where no charge was made except for supper, than to go where they might be under bad influences.

A famous 'farmers' dinner' was got up on Washington's birthday. The sewing society had a 'barbecued pig' on SU Valentine's day. Weekly maple sugar parties relieved tbe tnouotony of March and April, and various other fetes and parties were raado to contribute to the preparations making for tbe great May breakfast.

Tho affstr had been well and judiciously advertised. Then, a May breakfast was a novelty in that locality. The day was ak lovely as a poet's dream. People of leisure drove tan miles from tbe neighboring citv, and with appetite# sharpened by too fresh, sweet air, declared that they bad never tanted such eoffee, cakes, roust turkey and crisp, fried potatoes. They drove home and sent relays of friends to tbe festival in tho little church at Winterset in tbe afternoon.

How all tbe members of tbe pawing, clroloiworked !s The various f&rces were3 admirably organised and directed, and each committee—from the sweet old ladies wbo sat in the pretty church parlor and made theowelve* agreeable to all wbo came, to the AUrylikeSunday school children who made and sold bouquet* of arbutus.

How tired they all were when tbe doors were dosed at 4 o'clock! They were not too Ur*d, however, to respond with alacrity to tbe pastorS* lnvitatiou for all who belonged to the sewing ftodety, or who bad interested themselves In any way in getting up tbe breakfast, to return to the vestry at 8 o'clock and see the 'besom' box opened. 'I dou't think them can be much in IV said Julia Ann- Lancaster to Herbert blaster, as they were proceeding homeward, 'everything has gOM off so pleasantly. There was never known anything like it.'

The vestry was well filled at tbe time the box. had either helping band to the enterprise or buying as organ Tbe city folks had gone borne, bat eaoh one of the realdent helpers was naturally curious to know whether anybody beside* himself or herself had felt oonsclemioosly bound to pay a 'besom' fine all along the preparations for and continuance of tbe fair. 'We will bring the box/ cried Johnny Klder and Reuben Snow, two wide

their general helpfuluess throughout tbe day, bad been promised tbe privelege of openiog tbe wonderful box. When tbey came tugging along, as if bearing a heavy burden, everybody amiled, and then laughed outright. Johnny, setting bis end of tbe box on tbe platform, said in lugubrlona tones, snapping his fingers, 'Gradons! I beard the minister say that sin is heavy there must be lots of it in here.'

With a flourish of the hammer Johnny drew oat tbe nails aid removed the lid. The spectators would hardly believe their eyes, for tbe box waa nearly full. 'We shonld have had some pretty warm times if it bad not been for this receptacle, into which onr ill feelings bave been consigned,' said tbe pastor.

The counting of those pennies caused a great deal of merriment. A dozen men, including the deacons, gathered around tbat box on their knees, each counting out a dollar and banding it to some one of tbe ladies to recount.

A great many of the nickel pieces were wrapped in a bit of paper opon which some appropriate or suggeative verse of a hymn or text of Scripture bad been scribbled. These caused considerable amusement, aaeacb in turn, when found, was read aloud by tbe pastor: 'Because tbe cake I made myself was passed by me.' 'May tbe Lord forgive me for not •iking to make button-boles.' 'Because I would not go home witb Jane.' 'Not a needle left In my book.' 'Because I wasn't put on tbe srbntus committee.'

Mr*. Peter White passed me without speaking to me.' 'Sour costard, etc. A ten dollar note was wrapped in a piece df brown paper on. which was written: 'A bitter pill, but it's down.' There were, besides, hundreds of pennies and nickels in tbe box, two five dollar gold pieces, several dollar notes and many half and quarter dollars and dimes.

Evidently tbere were many people whose 'besom' would not go down by tbe outlay of a penny, nor a nickel, nor a dime even.

I bad no idea we were such a crusty folk,' said tbe doctor's wife, as, by virtue of her office as treasurer of tbe sewing society, she announced to tbe assem bly the grand sum of pennies and nickels, dimes, quarters, halves and bank notes, tbat tbe 'besom' box had contained. •Ob, the old Adam is always on the alert,' replied good Mrs. Vinton, whose remark to her near neighbor was cut short by tbe announcement from tbe minister tbat more than enough funds bad been raised to purchase the new church organ, and that tbere would be a snug surplus left to remain in tbe sewing society's treasury.—N. Y. Observer.

TERRIBLE TRIP OF A TRAMP. A tramp who arrived here, say? tbe Cheyenne News, a few days ago from the west, gives bis experience In deadheading it over tbe Union Pacific from Cbevenne to Green River, on the Jarrett and Palmer train, by climbing upon the root of a coach. He says that from Cheyenne to Sherman he rather enjoyed tbe ride, bnt tbat between Sherman and Green River bis experience was one never to be forgotten. Tbe rspid movement of t£e train and tbe rocking of the coach forced him to wind his arms and legs around a stovepipe and hang on for dear life. His hat dew off early in the ordeal, and after tbe train left this city, be was discovered by the engineer, who began throwing a heavy shower of cinders, but no rapid was the movement of the train tbat the heaviest ones merely cot through bis clothes like ballots, while the lighter sparks passed above him. His coat tails flapped so hard tbat be realized he must part with them, but be dared not loosen his hand to tuck them under blm, and they were soon torn off to blow away. Although he managed to keep bis face behind the pipe nearly all the time, he was frequently struck in tbe faoe by flying cinders, so tbat when be reached Green River bis face and neck were badly cut and scratched. So great was tbe poor tramp's fear of being thrown off and klllea tbat this, added to tho terrible strain of hanging to the pipe by main strength for so long ad tetano?, and the Intense suffering from the wounds in llicted by the cinders, caused bis hair to turn gray, and when be climbed down at Green River he looked like a man who had seen fifty instead twenty.two summers.
