SOME ONE'S SERVANT 0'{RL
She stood there leaning wearily if 1 Against the window pane Her face was patient, aad and sweet. Her garment* eoar*e and plain.

Again 1 raw her on the street, With burden trudge along: Her face was sweet and patient still, Amid' Klowlj Guarding' A market basket much too large. For her slight hands to bear.

A man I'd thought a gentleman Went pushing iudely by, Sweeping tbe oasket from her hands, But turning not hiaeye, For there was ne neeesslty, y*T* Amid that busy whlil, For him to be a gentleman "To someone's servant girl!"

And many a man and woman fair, By fortune reared and fed, Whr will not mingle here below, With those who earn their bread. When they have passed away from earth Beyond the gales of pearl, Will meet before their Father's throne With many a servant girl.
A CHAPTER FOR HUSBANDS. Reading an old paper the other day, I found a sketch of bow one wife proved herself an angel, and it struck me that a knowledge of it might hasten the milienium, and give other wives a chance to become seraphs.
A certain merchant failed In business. He went home despairing, and told his wife the story of hi* losses. She essayed no vain words of comfort, but gave nitn •the good book,' from which to draw consolation Opening it, a ten dollar bill dropped out, another and another, until between those leaves he bad found a little fortune.
Hastily calling his wife, 'he fell upon her ueck,' and announcing emphatically that sbo was an angel, commenced business again upon $9,000 capital.
It bad all been saved so tte good lady said, from the sums given ber for table expenses. Each week she had deposited half ber allowance within the good book for a 'rainy day.' What an admirable plan it would be for other husbands to experiment in the same direction!
I thought of the multitude of wives in our land who rarely see a ten dollar bill, and slghod to think of the little chance they have to develop tbelr wings. In some oases, perhaps, the experiment might fail, ut ir only half proved successful, just Imagine bow the number of angel wive* and thriving husbands would bo multiplied! 'Ah, but,' y»u say, 'I should fall In a year.'
Ferhaps, bnt that will be your com panlon'a golden opportunity to prove herself more thun mortal. Tnen, too, you would bo as rich in the end, for she would give It all back to sot you up in business again. Men witb abundance of money can try the plan with lit.le trouble. Poor men, by giving up their pipe and glass, can do likewise, and eveu lx their wives fall to become all they could wish, they are better off than before, for abstinence will give them clearer heads and stronger arms, with which to conquer fate.
Looking at it from all sides, it seems a most dosirable thing. You husbands who have doled out the merest pittance grudgingly, give your wives a little more thau they need, and give them a ohance to become angels, too. You will by Justice toward her, become a more suitable companion for the bright bsing she may prove, and at the worst, you will rejoloe In the consciousness that you have done your best to lit bor to be an examplo to ber sex and a light to tho. world.
Just think, for a moment, of the honor that awaits you as the compautou*of an angel, and you will, I trust, become 'a obeerlul givpr.'
ELIZABETH WOOD.
HINTS ON THE CARE OF TIIE EYES. There are, says the Rural New York' er, perhaps more Individuals who ascribe their weakness of sight to a use of their eyes under an Insufficient artificial, illumination than to any other a®o cause. In a great many Instances this may not be strictly true, but there can be uodoubt that faulty artificial light is one of the tnoet productive Cause* of certain class ot injuries, to which the eye can be exposed. The two sources of trouble with the ordinary artificial lights are: 1. That they are not pure white. 2. That they are unsteady. The first defect Is found in all artificial lights except the Ume,eleotrio. and magnesium lights: tbe latter especially in caudles nnd gaj». The yellowness is, in a measure, counteracted by using, In the case of lamps and gas. chimneys of a violet or bine tint, and the flickering of the employiga conip furnishes the most satisfactory light. The next beat Is gas with an Argand burner. The chimneys of both may, as above suggested^ be advantageously of a light-blue
The position of the light in relation to the body is of sjrwit I mportance. If a shade is used on the lamp or burner (it should, by preference b® of ground or the the

In this case tbe light should come from behind and slightly above, and fall directly ou the work, whence it is reflects to the eyo. It ahould never Sail diteeiiy on the faco.

NEW TRADE FOR WOMEN. (Olive L»gan in Harper's Bazar.] At the bath house church of La Madeleine^ called after that magnificent buildin told the female attendant that she send the chiropodist, or, to use tbe French term, 'pedicure,' to me, as soon as I bad had my bath and dressed my self. 'Then mad a me will not have her feet 'done* while she is still in the bath?' she queried. 'It is more convenient. It is thus that all our ladles do In Paris.' she' Is not infringed,
Oar pedicure is a good,
brave woman, knowing well ber trade. A sheet thrown over the bathtub, and with our brave pedicure in tbe room, the modesty of madame will suffer little.
So said, so done. The brave pedicure sustained ber reputation for goodness by ber looks when she appeared, and strap ped a band of leather from side to sld» of tbe batb tub. Sbo was a plnmp, good natured woman of forty-five or so, and tbe easy manner in which she handled ber numerous Instruments showed ber to be quite at ease in her profession. She placed my foot very gently and gracefully on the leather support, (while I luxuriously reposed in the warm water of tbe batb tub.) and dexterously man ipuiated tbe troublesome little consequences of unceasing tramping and the rubbing of tight or ill-fitting shoes. She was a pleasant talker, and while she wielded ber dainty implements with tbe ease and precision of long practice, she discoursed about th ©opening of the door of public -opinion concerning tbe pedicure profession to tbe secondary sex. 'It is some years now.' she said, *sinoe women pedicures first begun to practice in tbe Paris batb bouses. Formerly men came into tbe ladies' batb rooms, tbe lady forms being covered with a sheet, of course. But as soon as women learned tbe trade, and a few great ladies confided tbe little surgery of their feet to them, then no lady would tolerate a male pedicure in the batb room any more. It is a very nice and suitable trade for a woman who has sufficiently steady band, and all day I dm as busy as I can be, at forty sous for each lady, putting her feet in order.' oes everybody have troublesome feet, then
Everybody,' she answered, pouftiwly. 'There is not a lady bather cofnes to these rooms who has not got corns— some, frightful ones.- These mcmern high heeled boots are an abominatiori they murder tbe feet of all Who wear them.'
The female pedicure gave me such ease that I felt as if she hud furnished me with a brand new1 pair of feet when I got up and prepared to walk off on tbem.
And tbe bands?' she suggested. 'Yon would not like your finger nails 'done?' Handsome finger nails—they advantage greatly an already pretty band.' 8ly flattereTl I was in for the 'doing' of the hands, of course.
I will give you the address of the manicure we recommend,'she said. 'No, I am not a manicure—pedicure is my only trade.'
In tbe course of tbe day, more from curiosity than anything else, I betook myself to tbe rooms of tho manicure, between the hours indicated on her business card for her reception of clients at home. To my surprise I found the place crowded, not only with ladies, but witb gentlemen* patiently waiting tbeir turn for tbe favor of sitting with tho manicure. The dres* and bearing of all present indicated their position, and in almost every case it was one of, importance. Grave senators, young scleras of nobility, numerous stately gentlemen decorated with the cross of the legion of honor, tastefully attired ladles with cnndren attended by servants, TWK or three pretty Aiherican girls, sat around tho room and "glanced over books and Newspapers to relieve the tedium of waiting The manicure's operations were performed in the same room, and nnder her skillful scissoring and rubbing wo'saw hand aftor hand depart in a much more beautiful condition than when it was brought there.
After a tedious waiting my turn at length oame^and I seated myself by tbe mauieure's little table, upon which were aoattered the tools of her trade. These were soinsorsand knives of a shape specially devised for the trimming of nails files ban*clwrners a small basin of rose water with a bit of soap near it, a tiny towel of linen cambric,a bit Of leibon, and various polishing powders and sweet smelling unguents in the form of ruby colored pomades. The first step in her proceedings was to wash off tbe finger tips carefully, then to dry them, aftor assuring herself that there were no ink spots or other stains upon them. Then the clipped and trimmed the nails in the approved filbert sbspe, neither too short nor too long, nor too pointed nor too broad the 'half moons' at the base of tb# nslls we«e gently brought into clear light all 'hang nails' were amputated and after this she rubbed a coral colored pomade of a delicious odor upon the nails and the upper part of all the fingers. Attf? allowing tbtett\ remain a little while M.re wiped 16 off sftain and scattered upon the nails a golden brownish powder, whlpb she vigorously rubbed mm ..life" wltols le»jjt!« qjt lier powerful forefinger, occasionally aided the palm. More pomade, more powder, more rubbing, and then tharrSihi were shown with that 'beautiful a team upon the oi," that pearly piuKnesi sren in tbe interior of some delicate sea shells. As tbe pedicure had said, the manicure's manipulations greatly 'advantaged' a pretty hand, but Jevfen In 4 greater degree advantaged an ugly one.
The manicure, llko tbe pedloare, cbarjred forty sous for •sitting, that ts at ber own rooms. When she aid tho visiting ber price WRS a dollar. That *he found her business very lucrative was sufficiently Indloated by her handsome rooms and her prosperous appearance, t$h« was almost as orach a fln^ lady, in retpect to clothes, as some of ber ouatomens. She was very Independent, too for when a certain new comer arrived and stood at the door still looking about at the smiting crowd, Vhe aaid to him: 'Ah.
